Its interesting to compare Tropical Freeze and Impossible Lair because both feel like an separate evolutions of DKC. The former really emphasizes the spectacle and distinct energy of its level design, while the latter builds upon the overworld gameplay, unlockable bonus content with tonics, and more non-linear approach to progress. Different emphases, but definitely trying to build on what the 90s games had created.

This makes me happy. I completely wrote off this game and Playtonic because of how bad the original Yooka-Laylee was. But seeing you talk about this game makes me really happy and want to pick it up. The Impossible Lair looks like the kind of polish I'd expect from a Rare title, and the interesting concept of having one gauntlet at the end to beat at any time is something super unique and creative. When I first saw footage of this game, I was heavily disappointed. I was really hoping that they would stick to the 3D Collectathon genre and create the experience we hoped the first game would give us.
While I still have high hopes that we will eventually get a game we can call _Banjo Threeie_ (and it's probably for the better that they wait before delving into that genre again), this is looking very promising.
I'm a bit sceptical about the Lair itself, as I already found the end boss of _Yooka Laylee_ unnecessarily long, and I'm worried that they will continue that trend. But most of the game looks very charming; Trowser's literal paywalls are exactly the cheeky stuff I expect to see in these games, MUCH more clever than the Tonics replacing Cheato.
I want this game to be great for the irony alone; it would be quite funny, after they (kind of) failed with a game inspired by the original _Banjo Kazooie,_ to see them succeed with something that looks more like _Grunty's Lair._

As a backer, personally I found the game itself to be solid, but the dialouge and a lack of quality-of-life features (skippable text, music sliders, etc) on initial release brought it down. I think the issue is that most people are going off reviews (review copies had some major bugs) or the initial release, which had a lot of bugs in the first few days. I waited a week and most of the bugs had been fixed. The game now is definitely good, but at launch could've used a bit more playtesting.
