I'd like to expand on the context. The identity of the first singer (Jakuri) is even more profound when you recognize who she really is. She herself has closed herself from the world for much of her life, so Jakuri entreating with the heart of the sealed Reyvateil to open up carries so much emotional weight seeing as Jakuri is one of the few people on Ar Ciel that can empathize with that sort of trauma. I remember reading somewhere that a Reyvateil doesn't necessarily have to keep physically singing once the song magic is underway. She only needs to maintain the emotions she felt when evoking the song magic. Given that Jakuri is literally baring her soul out there for this song despite the self-doubt and self-loathing she undoubtedly is plagued by, (as evidenced by her Cosmosphere) this makes this song magical and more beautiful on a whole new level than what you see on the surface. Reading the lyrics made me shudder in awe of this moment all over again.
This sort of thing is why this is one of my favorite JRPG series despite its various shortcomings
@@realkraid I think most shortcomings are because of when it was made and lack of budget. I bet if this exact story got Square Enix, Final Fantasy type money, the mechanics and the like would be better. But yes, I agree that is an amazing series that is often so overlooked. I am glad some appreciate it at least.
@@LadyTsuki I think the mechanics are fine but the further they went in the sequels the more fanservicy they got. By the third they had dropped all pretense of hiding the eroge inspired scenes behind innuendo.
@@WalkerRileyMC You are right that the further they went, the more fanservice the games had. However, even the very first game had a decent amount of innuendo. Diving and install ports being the prime examples I can think of at the moment. You are right about the third though. It's by far my least favorite of the games and the way they did it was pointless. It had no pre-established reasoning and while the other two had some innuendo, the third I feel was closer to soft-core eroge. I think the first games examples are quite tame by comparison.
Oh and I don't only dislike the third game because of this stuff. It also had the weakest story and the worst heroines. I would be more forgiving, I think, if not for that bit. It's not a terrible game but much weaker than the first two and Ar no Surge.
@@LadyTsuki Except AT1's story is a lot weaker and more standard JRPG fare compared to AT3's story, which has some interesting things between the interactions the three factions vying for power in Sol Cluster have and all the twists and turns that it takes to make a reality the failed Planet Regeneration Project. AT1's only good things storywise were the ending fakeout at the end of Phase 2 and the way it decided to have Mir saved instead of killed to make its point, but for the rest its only strong points were its setting, music, and only a handful of characters. Also, I don't see how the AT3 heroines were the worst when Shurelia has zero in-game development, and Misha had a Cosmosphere that was made as an afterthought pretty much copying what they already had made for Aurica.
The great thing is that according to the lore this isn't a boss theme, it's a conversation.

Its not really that hard to play odd time signatures... a bit of rhythm practice wih coordination helps.

It's still really badass to this day that you get to have this girl as a playable character considering she was the *FINAL BOSS* of the previous game.

And going even further in being best girl of the whole series. I really loved her character in AT2 way too much. They really did a phenomenal job with her.

Out of the first two games (which are the only ones I've played), I think this is the best hymmnos song. It embodies almost everything great about the style - the use of layered, esoteric harmonies to compress emotional power into the music without sacrificing complexity of sound. This song is in 11-time, with a 12-beat measure inserted every three 11-beat ones, and complex rhythms are layered over a heart-beat base. It is a perfect composition, and it shows in the enormous power it has.
The chorus is 6/8 then 5/8

@@cumnmrmptaaa4234 Actually I think your both right. The main time seems to be 6/8. But for the Chorus it switches to 11/8 and 12/8. During the chorus some notes are held for 11 beats and that would look awkward if you switch time signatures during the note.

The battle that it's used in: bruh moment.
The gameplay itself looks like today's mobile phones games albeit a better ones since it is not restricted via pay wall of trying to access contents. Still hard to not love the game.

Mir sings this song to unveil the barriers of the Heart of the Land while also reflecting her attempts to reconcile with the predicaments of her own heart. This makes the slow, methodical heartbeats in this song all the more breathtaking.

Also "Desfel", meaning hate. Interestingly, "Infel" means love, and the word comes up a lot in game (Infel Pira, the "Seed of Love", and Infel, the first IPD).
I completely agree, to me this song embodies everything powerful about the series. Considering how goofy it could be, there were certain times when you could really feel the boiling emotions of the characters in AT, and this song is the ultimate example of that.

If you hadn't heard yet, Ar Tonelico 3 comes out in Japan on January 28. No word yet on a US release, unfortunately.

even though it is romanized as exec sphilia I think this song is actually EXEC_SphIlar it would make more sense because sphilia isn't in the Hymnos server dictionary
I agree. Particularly given the song's function.
The names of the songs are considered as proper nouns unless they use a known Hymmnos word, so Sphilia is every bit as valid as Metafalica or Implanta here. Plus, as if there weren't countless words that didn't get registered in the Hymmnoserver.
... Except that it's clearly a mistranslation. It might be valid insofar as the logic of proper nouns, but it's glaringly obvious it's a mistranslation.

And there is something else that debunks that theory of yours: "sphilar" is written in katakana as スフィーラ (check the Hymmnoserver), while "Sphilia" is written as スフィリア (check the Extra menu in the JP version of AT2), so they're clearly different words, despite being derived from the same root (sphere), and EXEC_SPHILIA/. is the original title used in the JP AT2 and in the tracklists of the Hymmnos Concerts. Ergo, no mistranslation here. Or are you going to say you think you know the game's world better than the people who made it?
