    I am always armed when I boondock. I train regularly and hold a Concealed Carry Permit. Also spent years in the military, some as armed Law Enforcement. I am not a threat to anyone but refuse to be a victim.

      Four years ago, I did the same training that police get for learning the right way to shoot (slightly shorter version), and went through various testing skills by instructors who are Sherrif Deputies. It was awesome! I found out I enjoy shooting at targets and that I am a really good shot. Guys in my class couldn't believe it was my first time with a 98% score. 🤗
      Having said that, I also have not practiced since then, and that's key for anyone carrying, especially remembering safe handling. So, next week I'm going back for a refresher, will finally apply for my CCW permit, but also schedule some practice sessions. It's legal to carry in my state, but I want a higher level of confidence, and the permit is accepted in 35 states which is good for my long trips next year. I don't want to be a victim, either, especially of my own gun.

      @@kimsargeant8126 during the investigation we were in communication with their son. Our hearts go out to the Butlers' family and friends, this was such an unnecessary tragedy. We had looked at the site for their camp at "The Bowl" and would have likely taken that spot for ourselves, had it not been already occupied. It was one of the best spots along that entire stretch of beach.

    Onion layers. Driveway motion sensors then cameras finally well armed. The further out you can’t detect a problem coming the better. Set the driveway motion detectors in natural choke points. Then a layer of cameras so you can observe the problem approaching. Hopefully you will never have to use the inner most circle.

    One of the things that is happening in America . Is most of the people are above 50. And you have to realize your vehicles have your state tags . And people who are looking to do something to you look for those out of state tags . Regardless of how many people say they never have any of these things happen are usually not paying much attention as they are having fun . I wish that those who make the doors on Rv ‘s made them where you could lock the screen then the door from the inside like a house . And I wish they would do better on the windows . The security is awful . Glad to see your video.

    Great video and I agree with your take on things. Cameras (and even signs warning of cameras in use) are huge in that they take away the element of surprise and can provide evidence if needed. Anyone with a brain would move on. Situational awareness of what is going on outside also gives you the minute or two you need to grab...whatever. What one has/does in that situation, once trouble is at the door...is entirely personal.

    Marc, I could almost guarantee you that this maniac had caused you and Patricia out as well as all of the other campers in that campground. The thing, that I think made the biggest difference to me was Zoe. She may have saved your lives. The killer didnt know if she was attack trained or not and why go thru the trouble of fighting off a dog when there were other people there that were alot more vulnerable and easier to take down. Zoe deserves a bone or a toy or something for her efforts. Pay attention to her if you are pulling into an area she doesn't seem to like, or she isnt her usual self please pay attention to her and move. Dogs know people better than we know people. Be safe, take care.

    @kcculp6430 Před 4 lety +3

    Mark - I purchased one of the Hiseeu cameras but found two serious flaws with it.
    1st - The camera must be connected to a wi-fi network to work. Being in range of a cell tower will not connect the
    camera to your cell phone, unless you also have wi-fi at the cameras location.
    2nd - Although the camera has a SD Memory card, it will not record unless it is connected to wi-fi.
    I have confirmed this with the company via numerous e-mails.
    As an added note, the camera has no indicator of the battery life, and, when charging the camera it has no way of informing you that it is fully charged. Therefore, if the batteries are dead the camera will not function and you may not know that it isn't working.
    Thanks
    P.S. Are you aware of any cameras that will connect to a cell phone when no wi-fi is available???

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 4 lety

      Great feedback, KC. Thanks for sharing that. We always have WiFi in our trailer because of the nano router we're using in conjunction with our Visible phone czcams.com/video/VrigHuE6igw/video.html . Even if we're out of cell range, the camera is still connected to the router, as is our phone, so a) the camera has a WiFi signal to connect to (even if it lacks Internet), and b) we still get motion notifications over the LAN.
      But no, we haven't tried to look for a camera that will connect to a phone directly without a network. That's because that cheap nano router always provides a network.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Alice! We waited to do this episode on purpose, as we didn't want to appear that we were trying to capitalize on the Butlers' misfortune in any way. When we had another security camera, that seemed like a good time to explain *why* we suddenly have a penchant for using security cameras. Our meeting with the suspect was pure chance. When we arrived on Padre Island, with overnight lows in the 80s we knew that we had to wait for a cold front before boondocking on the beach, so we set up in the Padre Balli County Park campground to have hookups for a/c. Our goal, though, was beach boondocking, so we took a drive on the beach to scope out the situation. It was there that we saw the suspect's Utah tags, so that gave us a reason to pull over to discuss where the high tide line had been, etc.

What I think about is a mechanical breakdown while traveling, and never knowing what dangers may be around the area in which you are stranded. So much crime happens because of opportunity, and elderly folks like me are easy targets if our transportation becomes disabled. Maybe law enforcement will come to the rescue.....maybe not.

    Thanks Marc for sharing a lot of good advice and common sense. There is some real evil out there. Anyone with tattoos like that does not think like I do and would not be someone I would want to be around. Sterotyping, maybe. I call it recognizing patterns which we all do in many aspects of daily life.
    I read a little bit about the Butlers. They seemed like several RVer CZcamsrs I follow. What a terrible thing to happen to them. Life seems so unfair at times.
    I was boondocking a few years ago when law enforcement took down an escaped prisoner in a forest camp ground about 3 miles from me. He had murdered a retired RV couple in New Mexico, burnt the trailer with the couple's bodies inside and stole the truck.
    When captured, he said he was sorry he decided not to kill the forest service person that recognized him. I have been in several situations where with hind sight, could have been ugly. Always be aware.

      Much of Williams' body art was hidden by clothing and hair when we spoke with him. I've got to be honest, I've known some pretty heavily tatted-up people over the years. It may be hard to picture now, but I'm a product of the punk music scene of the 80s. 😎 That's why when others pointed to this guy, I dismissed it as stereotyping. Then we saw the border photo and I instantly realized that they were right.

      That guy had quite a rap sheet. When reading about the Butlers, I saw a police shot showing his body art. His whole upper body was near solid ink. Somehow he must of spent thousands on that. He was definitely out there. After consistently seeing photos in the news of violent gang members inked from the top of their head on down it is not much of a leap to wonder about anyone you see like that. I am sure there are some folks like that which are fine but my guess is it is out of the norm. It raises red flags with me.
      I am extremely glad you and Mrs GA are fine and I can see why that incident can cause you to stop and think.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 4 lety

      James, first off, 99% of the time we have Internet via our Visible phone/nano router setup that we explain in our Episode 117 czcams.com/video/VrigHuE6igw/video.html . A cell phone booster (either Episode 39 czcams.com/video/sRMMyiu1WIg/video.html or Episode 136 czcams.com/video/eX4OowkC6AE/video.html ) helps to provide signal when we're in fringe areas. As a result, it's been well over a year since we've camped without Internet, and our living situation requires that we have cell signal to be able to work from the RV. Even in incredibly remote areas we've had service, and we're very anxious for the launch of SpaceX's Starlink service later in 2020 which will provide worldwide satellite Internet, eliminating those few dead spots that we can't camp in now. Starlink promises simple setup, sufficient speed and reasonable cost. We'll see if they deliver on those promises, but I don't put anything past Elon Musk.
      So we must confess that we haven't yet used either camera, the Hiseeu or the Litmor, without Internet. But in theory, even if we're outside of cell data range, both the camera and phone are networked together via the nano router that we shared in Episode 117 as part of our Internet solution. That network may have no Internet if we're outside cell service range, but they're still on the same LAN.

      Interesting question, Jaz. While the features are essentially the same, we'd have to give the nod to the Hiseeu with its low-profile magnetic mount. It survived a couple of hours at 75 mph.

      Our apologies that we just found this comment for the first time. We'll definitely check you out, although we feel poorly qualified to provide constructive feedback. Before we even look, though, the best advice we can give is that every video needs to tell a story. That doesn't mean that your shots need to be planned or scripted. Rather, once you're done shooting an area, or a topic, go back through your clips and ask yourself, "What story do I want to tell?" Then arrange your timeline to tell that story -- from premise, through progress or execution, to conclusion. The channels we like to watch, the channels that we subscribe to ourselves, are very good at telling that story, and that's why we enjoy watching them.

    "exercise your second amendment rights". I loved that one. True. You're a Trump supporter ! I can feel it.:-) Because Dems want to take away your 2a, Rep's. don't ! Cheers from Belgium. PS. Great video ! Very informative ! PS #2 : DieGoogleDie says : "if there's a guy with elaborate neck tattoos nearby, don't chat with him, leave the area." Also true ! I agree.

      Hi Roger About 90% of all Americans, democrats and republicans, want common sense gun laws. Your right… reps won’t change laws because they are so bought by NRA that they won't represent their own constituents.
      I don’t think the general public needs to own military type weapons, bump stocks or large capacity mags. I have owned pistols and shotguns for 40 yrs. I travel with my S&W 38. I am a democrat.

      Beach bum I agree with you wholeheartedly. There’s a reason why civilians cannot own/procure “claymore mines”-Military M18 anti personnel mines to protect their rig when boondocking. Can you imagine someone placing M18,s around their campsite with trip wire triggered to stop intruders and lose pets. This same reason why I believe civilians do not need military style rapid fire assault weapons for their self defense.

      If you knew us in person, you'd realize that we, too, are as non-PC as they come. 😎 But just to share where we're coming from, we avoid anything political in GA as we really can't see much point in pissing off 50% of our potential audience. It's a conscious decision that we made way back at GA's inception. We figure, there are plenty of other places out there that people can vent their political frustration, rather than on an RV travel channel. And we fully support your choice to exercise your Second Amendment rights.

    So you'er an infomercial for a useless security camera. The reason why it's useless is because it's improperly used, by everyone. The proper use of a security camera is as a force multiplier. Since you can only see what's in front of you, you need to see in areas not in front of you. You put up cameras. You have to watch the camera feed in real time so you can see the threat in real time, so the threat can be addressed in real time. Real time means as it's happening. If you have a recording of what happened, but you can't tell, who, did what. How many times have you seen a video of a crime, but can't see the criminals face? To prevent theft, I lock up my stuff when not using it. Because I refuse to be a victim. I have a dog. I carry a handgun with reload, knife, OC spray, & a handheld flashlight. I have a shotgun near by. I take my safety & the security of my property seriously. I thought about this before something bad happened. I don't take security advice from someone that only thinks about security after something bad happened.

    Smart not to dive into the gun debate. I will say that unless you have the same killer instinct of the truly hardened criminal the hesitation to use deadly force could make having a gun a hazard. Just my opinion and why I don't arm myself.

      As we said in the video, we believe that one's decision whether or not to carry is one of personal choice. And you've made yours.
