I have many Royal Mint rounds and they DEFINITELY have a milk spotting problem. 🤦🏼

So the best advice is probably to just save up a bit longer and get gold instead. Or even Copper! 😇
It's a shame the Royal Mint has let itself become a joke in terms of reputation; nearly all the opinions I've seen and heard seem to express that TRM has some of the worst bullion coins regarding milk spotting. Their processing and production depts clearly need an overhaul, yet it the consumer continues to facilitate this by buying regularly then I don't suppose they will make any changes soon.
I also hear that Canadian Maples from 2019+ do not milk spot, at least to a degree of any other Mint produced silver coins. So presumably 2023 maples will have this added form of insurance against milk spotting. Can you confirm this?
Fairly new to this so just doing lots of research, I was thinking of going for the Philharmonics as my first venture into silver coins, though I have heard these also milk like crazy.
So frustrating, I don't feel happy enough to enter into an area of bullion where the product may potentially be damaged straight from the sealed tube. Especially with the premiums on silver, as well as the 20%VAT I have to take.
Thanks for reading, hopefully you can allay some of my worries.

Anyone tried the baking soda method you use to clean jewellery? Which is put foil in a bowl, (shiny side facing upwards), add 3 or4 teaspoons of baking soda, add jewellery, and pour in some boiling hot water, a little at a time as it will fizzle and foam up. Work brilliant on my silver curb chain

Some chemist could make a fortune if he comes up with a dip that removes Milk spots from silver bullion coins. Some of these methods, including this one are old, I watched another that was put up 6 years ago. Good advice not to clean numismatic valuable coins. I think cleaning bullion coins is fine but far too time consuming if you have a hundred or more badly milk spotted coins. The best cure would be at the silver planchet company or the mint to wash the silver free of the chemicals causing them in the first place.😀😀😀

I just took delivery today on a few silver bullion coins from RM and wow...they're bad. Milk spots, scuff marks, scratches, and even chips out of the rim. Almost worse than pre-owned. WTF? I reckon I'd be lucky to get spot on them if I tried to resell. Never had problems in the past, but all RM purchases are on hold indefinitely until they get their QC issues sorted.

That seems terrible considering the mark up on the price.
You might think they should sell the coins at face value.
I seem to be lucky or not fussy as I keep my coins in capsules and have t noticed this problem.
If its oxidation then strong ammonia solution would work if it is an oxide coating.
The advantage of ammonia is it doesn’t affect the metal but will remove toning that may have been forming for decades or even centuries in a second.
Any rubbing even with an eraser is likely to form scratches and polishing is worse as you round off square edges and gives a look that is impossible to reverse and though different is just as bad as the problem you first had.

    • @CaldonianDude
      @CaldonianDude Před rokem

@@jfryer485 yeah it is terrible. I've not purchased any silver from the RM since that last shoddy delivery. Shame as I really wanted the Merlin to continue the set. And yes, it's a huge markup, and if you want further evidence get a quote for selling your silver back to the RM. I think the last time I got a quote it was less than spot price! :D

@@CaldonianDude Yes, different countries do different things. I expect some even give stuff away.
In France I got the 250 euro coin for the 2024 Olympic Games in solid gold for exactly 250 euros and so you can cash it in for zero loss except inflation and the chance the gold content eventually will outstrip even this value.
I have noticed stamps too are twice the price of French stamps year by year but the coins are just barmy with the only reasonable deal being to get used coins in change but this means they are not up to numismatic standards.
You dont mind paying exceptional prices for exceptional coins but even year sets are set at ridiculous prices compared to years ago.
Mind you enterprising people could do well by undercutting the Royal Mint prices and still not lose out.
Again in France there seems a customs and excise war, so even the high prices are matched by even higher import charges with one packet costing me an additional 130 euros and so my British modern coins have stopped now. Thanks BREXIT.

Using an eraser may remove the milk spot, but it leaves behind a smear caused by the rubber. Any silver surface that was previously shiny will now be dull. Not sure if a silver polishing cloth can get back that proof-like shine again.
