Huge Step DONE On The Free Abandoned Airplane

- It's taken weeks to get the tip tanks back on the 401! It's crazy to think that we've been working on the free abandoned airplane for over 2 years! 2 years ago when we put fuel into these tanks, they instantly leaked. We replaced the old Cessna 401 tip tanks with rebuilt Cessna 402 tip tanks. This is a major step in getting the 401 back in the sky. Jason, Joe, and Harrison all went on trips this week and Greg got a ton done at the shop. This is a super packed episode; welcome back to Rebuild Rescue!

Joe please wear a respirator when sanding. Paint particles are bad but resin is toxic. I love seeing the 401 getting closer and closer to being complete!!!
And fragments of glass fibers are worse.
The apprehension of screwing up a brand new expensive part. I feel your pain! Nice job. The 401 is coming together! I also spied Sam.😊
Was wondering where Sam had disappeared to.
Just mark and drill the flipping holes I mean come on dude really
I started following the 401 from the start and now my 15 yr old daughter has just binge watched all the back videos and is as hooked as I am, Thank you guys!
Are you sure your daughter isn't in the closet?
I can’t believe the cost of those little pieces of metal. I’m 73 and can’t believe how the cost of airplane parts have increased. I would be interested in the Austin Healy.
I want the Austin! - Been watching this series ever since the first video about the airplane, I figured "hey this will be fun for a few weeks, maybe months", still it doesn't feel like I've been watching for 2 years!
You guys got a TON of work done on three projects!!! Well done guys!!!
I love your show ! I worked inside large jet aircraft as a steward for 36 years and never wanted to know how they worked . Now that I’m retired I have learned so much watching your show and have a great appreciation for aircraft maintenance guys . Every time one of the guys would enter the flight deck I would think “ delay “ . But to have the jet inspected, safe and secure means much more than any delays. Thanks again for opening my eyes to the hard work and dedication of airframe and power plant maintenance crews Also I want the Austin 😊
ALL OF YOU GUYS AND GALS ARE SO AWESOME! A BIG HELLO TO LITTLE JOE AND SAM. GOD BLESS EACH ONE OF YOU. GETTING SO CLOSE! 😇
Wow! Already 2 years! I follow you guys since the beginning of the 401 rescue.
Keep up the good work!
Another important part of the project completed. Hard to believe those $4 brackets are $300 each, because they are "aircraft". I'm encouraged every week to see things going forward towards the finish!
That's not a 4 dallor bracket.not on a air plane.
Do your homework, airplane grade aluminium is very durable and expensive.
@jerrywilcox9890 kinda the point I was making. Aircraft grade aluminum is used in certain car applications, and is no where near as costly.
@@petervw56That is either 2024-T3 or 7075 it is not expensive. The cost is that high because that is a certified part.
401 is looking like it might fly sooner than later. Who would not want a Austin Healy.
The saga of the 401 is a tribute to all you guys who've put so much skill and determination into the rebuild. I need that Austin and would love to have it here in the UK where it was born.
I saw a video of Joe's and I wasn't sure if he went out on his own or a vacation. Glad it was just a vacation; he is one of the brothers.
He lied so he could get more views
Another 401 milestone is complete! You did a good job from drilling and riveting the mounts, to mounting the tip tanks - they align perfectly! The fresh paint on the 235 cowling and wing tips looks stunning. As always, keep up the Great work and have a Fantastic weekend y'all! 🙌🏼❤🔥
Thank you for your kind words Stoyan! Happy to see you here this Saturday, we always look forward to your comments!
Bunch of work on those brackets!. Youre lucky to have a all around team that can do all the jobs thrown at them!
Happy days Joe. You earn your weight in aluminum. Enjoy your trip. And yes,I want the Austin
For us Patreons and many military and non-military viewers,..... Please list the many individual items, trips and events that Rebuild Rescue has performed and done for us Veterans and other establishments since Rebuild Rescue began these many projects. We would love to read the list and value that Rebuild Rescue has brought to all of Us. We have Never seen anything.
That would be ZERO...
Nope, lots of promises, nothing tangible…what happened to the foundation! Give away? Remember the car? Boat? Other planes-
Another grifter
Just an observer here from the very first episode, veteran, father of a combat vet son…. I’m not an aviation guy; just someone who likes to follow projects along.
I remember when this guy was just trying to find his way and I’m thinking accidentally went viral on this plane rescue. He didn’t really have a plan except to get the engines running and claim the plane.
After that he, like other motivated people, started thinking about his situation and the ways he could sustain his viewers and ability to do this full time.
While he’s been at it for 2 years, he’s only getting started. But since you all get something out of the videos (entertainment and education) it’s not exactly like you have a reason to complain. If you gave money, I’m sure he truly appreciates it. If he’s not done events and such perhaps it’s because he’s in the middle of a dozen issues every single day. Most of these producers get divorced at this stage; the stress of producing is serious. I say we give him thanks and some slack.
It seems like he is selling other rebuilds to fund the 401. The 401 is the plane they said they were going to use for charity flights.
Probably one of the best videos you guys have done. I have to give MAD PROPS to Joe. His work ethics, his life history, just his overall perseverance gives me big time motivation. As an old fart myself, he gives me hope that it's never too late to put your heart into something that you love.
btw...where's his new smile??? 😁
Joe is an essential part of the Rebuild Team and we are grateful to have him! He'll be happy to hear you gain some motivation from watching him, and we are all happy you are apart of the channel 👍🏻❤️

Hi can you check the reply to my comment and let me know if that response is from you or someone trying to imitate you. There is some discussion regarding items I’ve supposedly won. Thanks so much. Norm
@normanjkew5618 unless it is highlighted from this channel and if it is asking to jump on a telegram or whatsapp number then 1000% a scam. Damn bots doing the rounds on pretty much every channel
@@normanjkew5618 That's a scammer. Been seeing them often here on CZcams. I reported the user.
@@coldsamon thanks for getting back to me. That was my suspicion.
I want the Austin. You guys are getting more done. It’s slowly getting there but perfection takes time. Keep up the great work!
Jason , Awesome work with Greg. I hope Joe has a Great Time in Utah- Yah Baby ~ Oh Yah - "I want the Austin Healey" refinished by 23rd Garage ! Yah Man - See you on the next one guys ~
Man I hope you guys have pictures of everything from where it was until finish, would love to see a full before and after montage once this thing is done!!!
Great idea Eric!
@@rebuildrescue first one I ever had 😎
🎉 Mounts are done! Can't wait to see the tip tanks on, she will look great. I would love to see me in the Austin, Dad's looked just like the rescue one you are doing.❤
I also was the 1 who made a slight suggestion of making a plack with all who helped with the repairs on the 401. to be mounted some where on the plane when it's finished. Thinking it as a nice touch to all who helped, assisted and or help fund repairs on the 401.
Joe needs to wear his mask while sanding bondo Resin & /or fiberglass as well as paint. Just looking out for my favorite guys! Anyway you guys sure been busy on lots of projects & going on vacation which is a good thing. 401 is coming along well. I was wondering how Sam is doing? Keep up the good work! I want the Austin Please!
You put all this hard work in, and still find time to take us along the journey. Keep on keeping on!
Joe is a master, makes paint and prep look easier than it is
Nice to see Joe working on the 235. I thought he left Rebuild Rescue (saw one of his videos)
Great to see things moving forward - can't wait to see the avionics and interior fitted to the 401.
Has it been 2 years?? Holy crap lol it doesn't feel like that long. Great job to everyone!
Glad the mounts are in the ‘free abandon airplane’ Jason.
And btw, “I want the Austin” 😃
"Mr. Jason" 2 years is a big time.In so much time you guys could have created your own Plane, but to work and rebuild the old creation limits your creativity and speed.
Your creativity and dedication is a motivation more many.
All The Best and wishing good health to you guys.
Waiting For Austin Badly too.
"I WANT THE AUSTIN"
RED colour on it is looking super super cool.
Love from India 🇮🇳
Another great video guys. I'm already imagining what the Phoenix will look like all painted up.
You’re doing a great job guys.
Following the re-build intently. 👍
Awesome, thank you for your support, we couldn't do this without you all!
What I LOVE about this stuff: I'm no engineer, so the amount of care and attention to detail, combined with the complexity of such a small part of the airframe, makes my mind boggle. Then I think about comparing the complexity of the 401 to say, an F-35? My head starts to hurt. Then I begin to feel dizzy when I compare the 401 to say,... the Space Shuttle?!? Time to lie down... 🙂
Super cool to see the pride and expertise you put into your work! With Joe actually fixing the tanks that multiple other people just put a bandaid on, and Jason never letting a thing slide and spending WEEKS to fix what other people wouldn’t. Legitimately inspires me to do good work and just inspiring that there are good, trustworthy people out there
Great episode. Great progress. What I can't believe it's that I've been invested in this series for two years since the 1st "I can keep it if it starts" episode.
We'll done guys! It's amazing to see how much work it's taken to get to this point.
All your support means the world to us. We wouldn't be here without the Rescue Crew, thank you for always being here for us!
I would like the car.
LOve all of the effort you guys are putting into the 401 . . and yes . . .I want the Austin!
TIP TANKS!! Oil change!! Engine parts!! Joe back!! What an event filled time!!! YEA!!!!!!
I want to Austin. =)
Make this OLD Sailor Happy, I want the Austin 🇺🇸
Can't imagine Saturday morning without this great show
Well that was a full video!! Fantastic to see the progress on these various projects, well done all of you, thank you.
I truly do applaud you guys for the amount of time it must have taken just doing the rivets alone with those tank mounts.
Met Joe at OSH in Target. Great guy.
1- why not use cherry max pull rivets there? Can get same tensile strength albeit at a bit more weight and cost.
2- when are you taking your A&P test? Clearly your experience on this channel would qualify.
Respect how much work and frustration goes into working with these tiny cramped clearances! Also.....I want the Austin!!
Respect on how much time and effort has gone into this project. I want the Austin.
Well done on all projects! Oh BTW, I would love the Austin! Happy to give it a good home.
i feel like a set of transfer punches would be very good for this sort of thing. used in machining to create a center punch aligned with a hole on the mating part and the drill likes to follow the punch mark
I started following the 401 from the start and I thought it was going to be an impossible project and you've done a tremendous job. I admire what you do. Love airplanes
That means a lot! Thank you for your dedication to the 401, you all are what make the Rescue Crew so amazing!
Can't wait to hear the new engines turn over for the first time !
❤more progress. Finish strong!
I am so excited to see this plane be finished... It has also been amazing to see it go slowly go through it's rebirth. Considering the age of it, and how much is being done to it, I wonder wondering if if it will see it's 80th, or 90th or 100th birthday flying??
Hey guys. Another great episode! Been with you since day one. Unbelievable how much TIME was involved in just those two small brackets. Really coming together…can’t wait to see the 401 take flight. Yes, I want the Austin!
Thats going to be one AWESOME 401 !!
Seriously, the single best episode!!!! This was incredible. Been in the passengers seat for the whole ride so far. But Joe? Damn that guy is SO friggin’ talented! So impressed. Enough that in my house we have rechristened the 401 as “Big Joe”! Great job on the brackets too!! Can’t wait to see the dashboard get handled. What color will the front of the dash be? Any accent color for the black displays?
Thank you for all your support, Joe and the rest of us are super glad to have you along for the journey! We'll have to stay tuned about the dash 😁
That’s so wild to me that a piece of $3 sheet steel was $700…. I feel I could fab that in my shop for next to nothing 😢
I have been watching the service on the 401 ever since the first, when you went out and inspected. Before you took the challenge of the 401 @ the beginning. From getting old engines running. Then the complete tear down. Stripping the paint. disassemble of, The interior. Can't wait to see finished product of The 401 & the first start of new engines. I watch every episode of 401 repairs. And last but not the least. I would love to have the Austin
Shout-out from Springfield Missouri! Ive been following the 401 from the start and it has been very inspiring.I can't wait to get the opportunity to get into the aviation community to be around people like you!
Holy crap, that looked like quite a bit of work to replace those two small brackets what a royal pain. I want that Austin... I bet it looks like perfection the way you all have refit and rebuilt the Plane. Really enjoy having the mechanic explain why systems are made the way they are with a double redundancy in the system to make the planes more reliable. Makes perfect sense of course but I enjoy a explanation of things like this.
Welcome to the world of aircraft that are basically hand-built one-offs. Even if they're built from the same standard drawings, there's no CNC, no universal drill jigs, everything is unique to that specific aircraft. FAA regs and construction methods are basically stuck in the status of how things were done a century ago... even for airframes designed and built a handful of decades ago. Think of them restoring a 1925 Rolls Royce motorcar, but with a massive government bureaucracy overseeing the whole process. Yes; it's more than a little irrational.
It doesn’t look like putting the tip tank mounts on was that hard, the hard part was getting the alignment to be perfect. You did an amazing job getting everything perfect. Your crew shows their commitment to excellence with every aspect of the project. Even when doing the oil change by checking over the entire engine, hoses and plugs. Kudos to you all. Remember that safety is the most important thing, be safe and enjoy life.

Paint looks like a Topographic Map! 😁
Damn, them Airplanes are on another level from cars.
Only thing I've worked on that is more arduous than an Aircraft, is a Spacecraft. Built and Qualified some Power and Signal Interconnect Connectors for the ISS Main Spar back in the 90's while at ITT CANNON.
Paper trail was a Nightmare! 🤯
Still cool though when I see it go overhead knowing on a very Small level, I contributed! 👍
Mike in San Diego. 🌞🎸🚀🖖
I'd love to have the Austin. That said, I can't believe it has been two years I have been following you. You are the first and only person I have contributed to on CZcams, too. Great work. Thanks for being true to the work. I am learning a lot and simply enjoy your videos. You are making me a better mech and pilot. Cheers.
Always enjoy your videos 🙂 I really want the Austin 🙂 Even better is when the 401 takes off for the first time since restoration 🙂
401 Forever.....have been watching for 2 years !!! Where has the time gone ???
I want the Austin. Jason, I Love these videos. Been watching every single one since day 1. Very proud to be a sponsor. Can't wait to see this plane done and hope that I'll be able to fly a mission!

I love this channel and I love the 401! My wife and I would love to cruise in the Austin!

Where was your respirator when you were sanding, Joe? That paint & fiberglass dust isn't healthy. Everything is coming along beautifully. The 401 looks a lot like a plane again!

Congratulations on those tip tanks brackets completion.
By the way...
I want the AUSTIN!!
I want the Austin, right up my alley. Nice work guys!
Nice work on the tip tanks! Greg is definitely a great part of getting this done and I see how he checks every little detail! Bravo!
It blows me away how much weight that structure can take, it doesn't seem possible.
Can't wait for the 401 to get flying again. I WANT THE HEALY
I haven't watched in the past month. Your coming along with the free abandoned plane. Can't wait to see it all done. I enjoy doing what your doing. Making everything perfect
Always....
Drill the two diagonal corner hole...
Lock those two holes in place.....
Flip part over exposing old part....
Then drill all the rest....
Separate parts (pop rivets).....
Install new part....
Simple.... positive alignment!
Aviation is so about being meticulous with every detail. You guys are rock stars with the work needed and that's to me why i watch. Thanks for doing what you do.
Followed this series since the beginning. I never thought it would require the amount you guys have put into it! Totally approve of your attitudes, but wow. I look forward to following it to first flight and beyond!
And, oh yeah, I want the Austin!
That's cool Joe got a vacation. I remember the episode where you said he never had on. Life is short, work is work, vacations create memories that restore you.
A very interesting project... I have been following since the beginning... your learning curve has been fun to watch..
I have been in the aviation business since 1974... A&P thru ATP.
From general aviation mechanic to captain of B767...
Your love for the industry is obvious and refreshing... keep up the good work.
and yes... "I want the Austin"
Working for 3 years in a metal fabrication shop doing very expensive custom pieces as a machinist, I can feel your nervousness. I opt for a bridgeport when it really matters.
Keep up the great work guys!! Love seeing these every week. We hit some road blocks at work recently and seeing you all get througj everything step by step inspires me to push my team to keep going.
Me and my boys love watching the episodes, and "I want the Austin"
When ive been in that position with drilling ive cut apiece of card stock the size of the area in question and made a template. Love your channel. Thanks for all you do.
Bring a licensed A&P Mechanic for 40 years +, I enjoy seeing this stuff. So far I don't see anywhere they are screwing up, doing it wrong or taking any shortcuts. If they continue with this quality of work, I would fly on this airplane with no worries. If I lived in the area, I would love to be involved in this project. The only critique I can see is the paint on the 235 cowling. In the lights I can see the "Tiger Stripes" in the metallic. That is caused by not overlapping the paint enough and not crisscrossing the color coats, and not keeping the metallic fully suspended in the gun. I was taught to set the spray pattern wide, fully overlap the passes by at least 50% overlap and shake the gun regularly to keep the metal fully suspended in the paint. (Or use a special metallic paint gun that has an air driven mixer in it), Metallic is hard to get right. And it is easy to show flaws. So if you don't do it all the time, It is hard to make it perfect. The prep work is flawless though. And that is 90% of the job.
My question is it appears to installing a tip tank that is used on a different aircraft model, someone needs to challenge them and ask Jason what allows him to install a different part number to what was previously FAA approved. It would be great if he would explain his logic on using a different tip tank.
Ton of intricate work today on the tip tanks. You guys make it look easy !!!! I been here for the whole 401 !!Me me me!! I want the Austin !!!!
Great progress guys and I would love to own the Austin
I'm not big on sociall media stuff but anything to do with this 401 project is my cup of tea. Great show and a great crew. You guy's are awesome at what you do. I first caught on at the beginning of the 401 ordeal because that's what it is. I can't wait to see that thing lift off. And yes I'd love to win that car but I don't think that possible because I live in Canada. Be safe.
You might use a centering guide to follow a pattern. I’m a small time guy but I use hobby shop brass tubing with a small handle soldered to it. Using something like a 3/64th inch tube 1/2 inch long with a 3/8 inch handle soldered to it so guide fits into the hole bushing hole to drill bit about exactly. If I had hundreds of holes I’d make tempered steel guides.
I love what Jason Joe#1, Joe, Greg are doing with the 401 and have followed the project from day 1. I love all the other side projects as well. I’ve made two separate donations to the project and support it wholeheartedly. As a former Army rotary and fixed wing aviator and civilian ATP, I flew Air Ambulance missions in a P Navajo, Super King Air 200, and Lear 35 for over twenty years. Now retired. I love this channel!
We’ve gotta keep aviation affordable 🤪
I love the work that you do, can’t wait to see all your videos … count me in for the Austin… I want that Austin
This is my go-to channel when I travel. Love it! Keep up the awesome work!
I want the Austin.
And good job on that sheet metal!
You guys a doing a GREAT JOB on the 401 !!! I want the Austin.
Just something magic when the paint goes on. And, I guess it’s kinda cool you got the tip tanks on. 😀 I want the Austin.
Love what your doing with the 401 I I want the free abandoned Austin
Most of all, I want to thank you for a very entertaining Siri’s, and bring those along the journey of the restoration on the 401! It’s a pedigreed plane with it even further awesome service on the Verizon and it could be for a better use!!
Thank you Jason and all of your crew and of course Sam as well 👍👍
All of the work being done on every project is so impressive from the standpoint of your pursuit of perfection. I have owned three airplanes, and felt the pain in my wallet each time they were in the shop. I can say I would have felt so much better about it had the rescue crew been doing the work. So impressive!
I want the Austin. Who doesn't want an Austin?
Can't wait to see this thing done.
A very satisfying episode to see all coming together well at the end.
