Lib Dem leadership hopefuls Jo Swinson and Ed Davey set out their plans for party leadership

  • Unlike the Conservative contenders, the two MPs vying to be leader of the Liberal Democrats had no qualms about accepting our invitation to go head to head. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    The party will have a new leader in just over three weeks. It was all but wiped out in the 2015 election after governing in coalition with the Conservatives. But in May's European elections they came second, and are riding high in the opinion polls with an anti-Brexit message. Now the Lib Dems could play a pivotal role in determining the UK's future relationship with the EU, and, perhaps, in a future government.

    I was totally vowing for Jo throughout the interview until she said that she condemns someone without a) proof and b) confession of an alleged felony. A member of the Lib Dems has been "accused" of harassing women. He denies and apparently there is no evidence besides the alleged victim's accusation. So, where's the ground for discrimination upon this man?
    Women harassment has to be the only crime where presumed innocence, habeas corpus and other pillars of the state of law, become suddenly suspended. On the other hand, howmany women have been brought to justice under harassment accusations, for trying to seduce men to secure career progression and positions?

    While the record of the coalition government is important, and by no means all bad, the key decisions - the negotiation of the coalition agreement - were made nine years ago. I feel that many voters have moved on - they are focused on today's issues.
    A small slip - the 2015 General Election was not the last General Election. The Lib Dems did a lot better in 2017 and have clearly continued to recover in local and euro elections more recently.

    How do we get away saying 'it would damage democracy to hold another referendum' in the current situation. If I understand correctly, the original vote came BEFORE any negotiation of what leaving the EU would look like and AFTER a colossal amount of misinformation was given to the public - largely by our current prime minister who seems to be planning further misinformation and currently hiding important information from businesses that they will need in order to prepare for the impact that leaving will have on trade and supply chains. @countkujo5313 Před 5 lety

      @Darth Remainer Yeh that's pretty obvious, so obvious that the Tory party have the same agenda. This is typical centrist simplification- all young people will be motivated to vote by just climate issues rather than any social issues, all middle aged-to elderly people have no obligation or expectation to care about climate change. And there are a myriad of ways of handling climate change, some involve cultural and institutional change that goes against supporting business in a traditional sense, they tend to be both sustainable and linked to a wider range of social issues. That platform is not a policy in the lib-dem manifesto and it won't be because it's too interested in broad appeal to the soft middle and foolishly so in a polarised and intersectionally stratified society without that traditional middle. A greener economy doesn't specify method, ideology or even extent. It's as vague as saying vote leave without a defined proposition for leaving. We can all have our opinions about what a greener economy would look like, this vision is just out of touch, vague, untrustworthy and ultimately born from compromise between corporate desires and the needs of the country not just now but for decades to come.

    It is no good calling for a zero carbon economy by 2050 if the rest of the world does not do the same, Britain contributes only
    1 or 2 percent to world carbon emissions. While of course we should reduce our dependence on fossil fuels as much as possible,
    To have a zero carbon world economy by 2050 seems to me to be totally unrealistic, however desirable it is.
    However, given the shambles of both the Conservatives and Labor, the Liberal Democrats should have the chance to
    Govern - it would at least make a change. And as the most enthusiastic advocates of staying in the EU, if Britain does stay in,
    They would try to make the most of the advantages of EU membership.
    But it strikes me odd that while saying Britain should tackle “the climate emergency” both Jo Swinson and Ed Davey say they would be willing to use nuclear
    Weapons, which of course would destroy civilization and life on the planet.
    The Liberal Democrats, of all people, given their environmental concerns, would, I would think, say that the first thing they would do
    To help grapple with these concerns, is to get rid of nuclear weapons, unilaterally if necessary, and spend the huge sums of money
    Spent on them to say, developing green or greener technologies, because developing those technologies would not be cheap.
    Scrapping nuclear weapons would be start, and make their green credentials more credible.
    But either of these 2 candidates would make a better Prime Minister than Theresa May, Boris Johnson and would be as least
    As good as Jeremy Hunt. And certainly a lot, lot better than Jeremy Corbyn.

Rethink the economy. Rethink how people should live in the future if you want to get carbon emission targets down. But most of all, hand power back to regions so they can build what they need.

When it comes to appealing to voters of other parties it is about having someone they can see on tv being interviewed and instantly feel confident that they are watching someone who would be confident at leading the country which would include meeting strong willed people on the world stage. I just don't see that with Jo but do see it with Ed. Ed will have far more appeal to your average voter, regardless of who has the better policy. If Jo is to be a successful leader she needs to get more experience at being interviewed on TV.

    • @MovesLikeJaGa
      @MovesLikeJaGa Před 5 lety

      @@lenabo9929 It was actually 26.6% of the nation that voted leave, it was 51.9% of the people who voted. That number gets smaller if it could be worked out how many voted for a deal or no deal, it gets even smaller if they wanted David Davis's idea of a deal, or Daniel Hannon's idea of a deal. Is it so wrong to say that the government have tried and failed to provide any of these promises, and therefore if they want to push what wasn't promised on the public, they'll need to seek a clearer mandate? Or to put it another way, can you still strip the EU citizenship from 66 million people, because 17 mil said so, three years ago?

    • @lenabo9929
      @lenabo9929 Před 5 lety +2

      First off majority choose to leave, everyone else that choose to not vote it is their own fault. That's how democracy works you choose to vote or not so using figures of those 12 or so million that choose not to vote are inrelavant. They have as big a chance as any one to vote and they choose not to, that mean the majority is based on those that voted. You are looking for any way of analysing the fact that remain lost. If it was the other way round you would not allow it.
      In terms of defining brexit, it quite simple base it on the leaflt that the government sent out. It means leaving all EU institutions.
