That storyline actually would've been interesting. Since G.U.N. didn't exist before Shadow, it only makes sense that Robotnik was the one to kill Maria, since movie Robotnik is clearly more insane than the egghead we know
Actually, GUN did exist 50 years ago in the SCU lore, it just wasn't called GUN at that time. The buyer legit said this, fairly close to the end of the Knuckles series.
