  • A 1913 Lincoln Elk.
The bike featured is a 1913 Lincoln Elk Model C 499cc 3.5hp (or 4.5hp depending on which period brochure you read).
The Lincoln Elk was the creation of James Kirby, a bicycle manufacturer from Lincoln. At the turn of the century, companies experimented with bicycles by fitting small petrol engines into their machines, and Kirby was keen to follow suit. A number of Lincoln Elk motorcycles were developed over the years, and before WWI there were either 402cc or 499cc single cylinder models available to the public.
The 499cc model featured was repatriated into Lincoln, England from New Zealand some time ago, where some of it was found under a garden shed. It was subsequently restored over a three year period.
There are a handful of Lincoln Elk survivors, and this model is one of two known with the companies patented two-speed countershaft, which features small clutches. A bicycle crank forms a kick start. The large chain is low ratio, and belt is high ratio - all controlled by the long lever on the left hand side of the tank.
Thanks to Phil Meggett for the video of this fascinating old machine.
