  • Hey friends, let’s build a sliding barn door dresser chest with drawers and adjustable shelves!
    This build is definitely not difficult, but this video is packed FULL of tips and helpful information to use throughout the build.
    This is definitely one of my favorite projects to date, so I hope you enjoy watching it come together here.

I really liked the design and your instructions are fantastic. I adjusted a handful of things to fit my needs and my skill set, but I am thrilled with how my attempt worked out and I learned so much! I was wondering if you had a place to share our outcomes using your designs? Thank you for helping me build my first piece of furniture!

    Shara, I'm dog sitting and chicken sitting this weekend. So I'm a bit late watching your video. I believe everyone should develop their own style of woodworking so I don't do everything as you would BUT I can't believe how much I do do as you would. I found myself paying most attention to how you trimmed out this project because right now I'm close to trimming out my home office project. I find your use of cedar very interesting because I'm considering using it for my door fronts because it takes stain differently that the plywood I've used which hopefully would give me a nice contrast. Enjoyed seeing both Bubby and Lucy make appearances. I'm sure you'll be giving them both lots of hugs and kisses. On this project I'd advise anyone who was going to build it to purchase your plans and the hardware you used to get a rather remarkable result. Hope your having a great weekend. Thanks for Sharing!

    OK I love everything about it Great video, I love watching you build stuff from the comfort of my couch...
    The engineer in me has to comment...
    I could be wrong but brad nails into the front of doors that are pulled on to open offer extremely little additional strength and are really only necessary to hold the pieces for the glue to dry. Once glued, the glue is a stronger bond than the wood itself.
    Just my thoughts may save you a few brads and a trip to HD in the future.
    Clamping while the glue dried may have helped more.
    Armchair quarterback here.
    Keep making great videos, Thanks

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for watching! Also, yes, the brad nails don't provide much strength--although they do provide a little. However, nailing at alternating angles will provide some additional holding power. I needed the nails for the door in the next step, anyway, plus some stain and paint trays for another project, so not a completely useless trip to town haha.

    Hey, this one is sort of an amalgam of several different Woodshop Diaries design vibes... and I love it. The sliding barn door is a real space-saver and visual interest element. I personally like the little angles on the front legs... and you might think about chamfering the other three sides of the legs to help with splintering if the piece gets moved (especially since we're using our favorite SPF lumber - who sez you can't make fine furniture from 2x's). I had to watch twice... once for the build and a second time to play "spot the animals" 😁

    • @WoodshopDiaries

      One of these days I should do a video where we try to see how many times we spot each pet and play some sort of game with it 🤣 I love having them around when I’m working.

    Beautiful cabinet! You make it look so easy to build 😅 I have a question about the pocket holes. I noticed you don't use clamps when you're connecting the panels with the pocket holes. Don't the panels move during screwing? Also compliments for your workshop, so well organized and clean 🧹👌🏼 Thanks for sharing this video!

    The cedar accents look really nice! An engineer with such good design sense as well! I like the geometry tips about cutting the angles as well. I think in a previous video you mentioned you got a new camera. I'm curious what camera you use for your videos. I hope you keep all this videos and plans up for a long time because once my daughters move out I can see me making some of your designs for them. I really love this one!

      Thank you so much! I hope the tips about the X trim come in handy one day--I've used that "trick" so many times and it saves a lot of figuring and calculations haha.
      I got a new video camera about 3 years ago--a Sony a6400. It took me a good while to figure out how and when and why to change the settings on it, but I think I've figured it out for the most part. I'm definitely not an expert (I don't really enjoy video, so I want to know just enough to get me by haha), and I often forget to change the settings for the morning (when the sun is shining in the shop) and the afternoon (when it's not). Other than user error (haha...me), it's a decent camera for what I do. But I'd much rather be taking still photos haha.
      I hope to keep the channel and website up and running as long as I can. I'm sure your daughters would love anything you make for them! I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!

    Really enjoy your videos, Ive only seen a handful, but really enjoy the knowledge you give, I have a question, I see that you use pocket hole joinery a lot, which I do as well, I don't see any glue being applied along with the pocket hole, Just a preference of yours?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I actually reference this in my latest video. In most cases with pocket hole screws, glue won't hurt, but it may or may not actually help. But it will make things much messier. I don't use glue often (I do some when it seems necessary), and a big reason is because I recycle my projects--take them apart and reuse the wood to build something else.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +1

      I do in some cases. But in most cases, it doesn’t add much of anything except a big mess to clean up during assembly.
      When I only use one screw at a joint, I always use glue. Otherwise, usually not.

    Hi Shara - your work is amazing. I only have one suggestion - please stop appologizing in your videos! I'm sure there are comments critizizing whatever methods or decisions you make, but you are good at what you do and you don't owe anyone an appology. While this skill comes pretty easy for you, it is a skill that most people do not have - and that makes you an expert at what you do. Own your amazingness, your choices, your methods and keep doing what you are doing!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +1

      THANK YOU! Most peoples “suggestions” are just their way of “kindly” making jabs 🤣 but I truly (TRULY) do appreciate this suggestion. I always tread lightly as to try my best not to wake the critics. But you’re right…I should just own my choices. I won’t agree with the amazing ness part, though. I appreciate the compliment, but I definitely don’t think I’m at that level haha. Anyway, thank you for your kind words and encouragement. They mean more than you know. 🙌

      @@WoodshopDiaries You should work on that part because you are amazing. I bought a house recently and I've done some pretty cool projects. I thought they were pretty easy to do, but people that see them are wowed. So I have to sit back and think about what comes easy for me is extrodinary to someone else. If someone doesn't like how you've chosen to build YOUR projects - they can simply make a different decision or watch someone else's method. I PROMISE you are worth owning your awesomeness!

    Just have a question for you. How come you don't build drawers with dovetail joints? Instead of pocket hole joints? The dovetail joints are stronger. And will hold up better over time. Congratulations! It is a nice functional project though.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před rokem +1

      Dovetails are great. But I’ve never had a failed drawer using pocket holes either. They’re quicker, easier, and more approachable to others who are looking to build the same. There’s plenty of ways to build a drawer box and most of them work equally well for the application they’re used in 😊 thanks so much for watching!
