Hi Julia! I’m with Alaska mainline and didn’t know you used to work for Horizon! I would love to see a video on your time at Horizon/at a regional and why you made the jump to American instead of flowing into Alaska. Maybe pros and cons of flying regional? I feel that would make an interesting video 😊

Julia, when I applied, I was immediately invited to my airline's hub, and made it all the way through to the final face-to-face. There were no video interviews. What stands out for me from that time is the desperation. We were a large group that was narrowed down over the day, to those of us making it all the way through. My biggest suggestion is to NOT be an eager beaver on a stage, constantly auditioning. Because the powers that be see it and don't like it. My thinking and behavior was, "I'm here, do you like what you see and hear? If so, great." This was my first try, top tier, major airline. Apparently, they did like what I had to offer, because interviews and activities took place over an entire day. The final face to face was around dinnertime. Be yourself at all times, but of course do so with class, and according to why you are there. Pay attention, be flexible. Great video, Julia!

Well said Julia. I agree being a Flight Attendant does completely depend on the airline you are with. It's not an overly difficult position but you can feel anxiety at times. Also, I would not recommend commutting because of the unknowns/stress involved. After FA graduation, move to your base, then evaluate your options (change bases or move alltogether). It's just easier all the way around especially on probation (your first 6 months as a FA). The more seniority, the better you can manage your schedule to meet your needs. Lots of FA's work for 40-50 years and hold great schedules and make excellent pay. It all comes with seniority/longevity.

    • @johniii8147
      @johniii8147 Před rokem +3

Yeah commuting isn't worth the stress. But many really don't have a choice since many of the hubs are very high cost locations you can't afford on a staring FA salary unless you have tons of roommates or a a partner bringing in the bank.

Growing up near Cleveland OH, a good neighbor and friend of the family was a FA for Northwest Airlines (and later Delta). Despite living near Cleveland, she was based out of DTW and typically worked international routes like Amsterdam & Tokyo. When my 6'4" tall father flew with NWA, she was able to get my father upgraded to premium cabin and during my 1999 trip to Europe with NWA & KLM, my younger sister & I flew as unaccompanied minors and she told the respective FAs to treat us well!

I was with a regional airline which was a Delta connection airline and I honestly. loved it. The destinations weren't all that glamorous. However I worked there for 8 years and had great seniority. I got the trips I want and the days off I wanted maybe 3 to 4 years in. I became a check flight attendant and I recruited with HR to recruit and hire other flight attendants. After 8 years I needed to start my career in corporate working in HR since that was my true passion. Quitting the flight attendant job was the best decision because I went straight to corporate and 3 years later am now making 5 times more and have 5 weeks of vacation where I can pay for confirmed seats and now am a Delta Gold Medallion Elite flyer. I think if you really don't care about money you can be a flight attendant. If you don't care much about lifestyle then you can easily adjust and be one but since I started when I was 25 I needed to start my career and not be flying my whole life. I fly on so many trips now that I think I fly more leisurely then I did when I was a flight attendant because I was trying to make the money to pay bills. I'm actually comfortable and happy with my funds and I'm typing from my vacation in Japan right now. All of the major airlines may be better with pay but may take some time to get the type of trips and days off you want depending on your base. I would encourage everyone to work for a major and request the junior base if you plan to make this a long term gig.

I'm glad that you touched on relationships. I hope that anyone that sees this and happens to be young, right out of college or high school realizes that it takes a lot of work. Especially, if you're going to be a commuter as opposed to living in the city you fly out of. An example of what makes it difficult is, first, you're new and on reserve and never know when you're working or at home or at base. If you're both new and both are commuters you could be at base and she could be at home, you could be flying, she could be at base, you could be at base, she could be flying. Making a relationship work is up to you and the person you're seeing. I have seen some successful relationships from commuting f/a's but have seen a lot more fail due to those reasons. You're a commuter, she's a commuter, you're both new with no idea of your schedules, you both have different work days.

My dream job as a kid was to be a flight attendant, idk why but that’s what I wanted to be when grew up lol. I worked customer service since I was eligible to work at 15/16. And after a few years it left me drained because people can be a lot, they’re rude, entitled and it just wasn’t healthy for me. I had a few bad experiences, so I switched fields and now I work with animals 😊.
I do still love to fly and travel and low key wish I was a flight attendant it looks like so much fun besides the customer service part. I just subbed because I’m going to live vicariously through you 😂.

Any time I see flight attendants in a hotel bar, I belly up to the bar. They are always interesting to chat with. I had a 6 year fling with a flight attendant. Was a exercise in logistics to end up in the same city at the same time, but was intense when we did.

Hi Julia, enjoying your channel, as being a flight attendant was my dream when i was much younger, i even almost was one but failed at the medical because of my sight, anyway, so watching your videos makes me live a bit the career i didn't have, that said, am wondering why you are not flying more to European countries. Thanks for your answer and be safe (oh and by the way i LOVE Luna !!)

Hello! Thank you very much for the great video! I’m not sure if this question was already answered but is there an opportunity for a flight attendant to go on major vacations from time to time? Is it possible to be sure to not have work for a longer period of time? I Hope you understand what I mean. Thank you.

I thought about applying for British Airways while I was an AA employee (gate agent) based in LHR because I just simply could not become a FA with AA since I do not have a US visa, but I changed my mind when my colleague told me about the salary. I don't know how much you make in the US as a FA but over here in London, UK, I would expect it to be more.

Ik it's kinda late to ask, but do FA only work in one airline company? And does this company only go from (ex, it's an American airline) America to other countries and back? I'm sorry if the question isn't understandable. I mean if you go from America to France (on an American airline) do you have to go back to USA and after that in the next county or is it possible to go from France to that country without going back in USA?

Do you know any flight attendants who also work as stage actors in their spare time? I world in retail during the day and I work as an actor in my spare time, but have wanted to peruse a career as a flight attendant since I was about 16. I haven’t tried yet just out of fear that the commitment of being a flight attendant would take me away from the theater world entirely. Do you have any suggestions on this. Thanks. Great video btw!

I applied to be a Flight Attendant for an airline and looking forward to the next steps and face-to-face interview before being hired. This video has helped me get more insight into what it is like so thank you for this video and sharing your experience. If I get the job I am looking forward to flying abroad because in my 20's I never went on holiday as I kept laying off renewing my passport when I hit my late 20's I got it renewed and didn't go on holiday as I didn't want to go on holiday alone. This would make up for it if I got the job.

I am a 35 year FA at Delta. I’m 57 and started two weeks after graduating from college. I completely agree with what you said about the job’s “pay” is money and experiences. I have had some fantastic experiences and met amazing people. I was hired by AA but chose Delta because it was a better fit for me. I only wish now that Delta FA would organize and get union representation. It is long overdue and the company is not the same one I was hired by! And yes SENIORITY is everything. I guess it is fair to say I am a “senior Mama” 😂

Hi Julia. First off, awesome name, that’s my daughter’s name. I’ve always had the flight attendant thing in the back of my mind as something I’d like to do. I’ve been professionally unhappy in my current job for the last going on 14 years and it’s time for me to make a change. I found your video very helpful. I’m very early in my investigation stage with this potential new career change for myself. I love to travel and right now I’m for the first time in many, many years able to do something like this. My wife and I recently separated (it’s a good thing, we’re bff’s just bad marriage partners), my kids are all adults in their 20s and I can finally make this purely about me. What international airline would you recommend I look into? I’ve been thinking about working for British Airways or perhaps Air France or Quantas. Any advice? Thank you!

A question about the anti-smoking policy of the current airline companies! It is now forbidden to smoke on all commercial flights, whether they are local or long-haul flights! So a smoking air hostess would already have the difficulty to get a nicotine substitute, chewing gum or spray. But I saw a report about a company in the Middle East where smoking, even off duty, on your own time is a cause for dismissal or not accepting the application. What is the policy of American companies today?

Every job, even when you own your own company has tough days. The most important thing in a career is do what you enjoy doing, then most of the time you don't refer to it as work. It took me some changes, but for the last 35 years, even with some hassles and stressful days, I thouroughly enjoy what I do for a living. I could easily retire now, but I don't plan on it anytime soon. Most days I have are fun and I meet a lot of incredible people. Yep I'm old in Dallas🤠 Julia is a very good CZcamsr.

How can they legally require you to work (boarding, de-plane etc) and not pay you for that time? If you are not a contractor, aren't they required under FLSA to pay you? Haha, I imagine some go into this line of work expecting to always have that Cancun hotel and the reality is they are stuck in Neward (KEWR).
