- No one has ever reached the highest point of every country in the world. Will anyone ever? I'm not so sure. But if there's anyone that has a legitimate chance, it is Eric Gilbertson.
As of November 2020, Eric is 34 years of age and has climbed 119 country high points - the third most of anyone in the world. Eric's twin brother Matthew has climbed 91 high points. Often, they climb together.
In part 2 of this multi-part series I sat down (virtually) with Eric and we talked about logistics, planning, cost, and his experience climbing technical Asian peaks.
Eric is as genuine as it gets. I want to thank him immensely for sharing his story and letting me use his photos in this video. I would highly reccomend visiting Eric and Matthew's website: www.countryhighpoints.com
Start by reading Eric's trip report from Afghanistan or their trip report from Saudi Arabia. If you want to track their progress you can also do it on their Instagram: @twinstothetops

When I was climbing at the base of mount Cook NZ I met a duo from LA and NYC who had climbed about 55 of the tallest mountains and they had bagged North Korea. They said that was the weirdest experience, they had written to the government for 6 years asking for permission with no response, and on the seventh year they received a response. They had to pay for a 30-crew DPRK military plane to fly their climbing group and the whole time the Korean military crew looked at them like "who are you and why do you want to climb this so bad?"
Why didn't they just climb on the Chinese side of the mountain?
The highest peak of mt. Paektu, Janggun peak, is 100% north korean territory so they had to write letter for 7 yrs...
Great job on the interview and production Mikey. I have some first-hand knowledge of Eric and his brother Matthew's motivation and determination. You can guess by my name I am their proud dad. I waited for them below as they climbed Pico Torquino in Cuba. You have asked a great question..Is it possible? Yes I agree Eric has as good a chance as anyone.
Thanks Keith!! Super cool to hear from you. I think they have a good chance too! I'll be following along.
Eric is awesome.
I watched it again/ Still a great interview and production. Two days ago Eric officially completed the five mountains to qualify as a Snow Leopard
Every county high point in the US would be mind numbing, lol.
every township highpoint
So many are private property! That's the biggest challenge
@@jamesdoeshisbest but townships dont exist in every state
Some people have dreams and aspirations to climb tour mountains. It makes my dream to start my own production company looks like a tiny ice cube compare to their big ass iceberg. Good on Eric for his accomplishments.
*tall mountains
It is all relative! Your dream is awesome :)
Super interesting guy. I feel like if I met him in real life, he could spend hours telling me stories of his adventures and I'd never grow tired of them.
Totally! I'm really excited to meet Eric in person once the borders open and it's safe to travel.
A question I've never even thought about but so damn interesting. Thank you for the video
wow, that one of the coolest life goals I have seen... thumbs up :)
These videos are amazing, I love the pocket of adventure they hold!!!
These videos are like a diamond mine of information and inspiration.
This is such a great goal to accomplish. I loved hearing the stories of trying to get certain areas to climb. I didn’t even know you would need permission to climb some of the highest peaks.
Really interesting vid, good stuff
Vertical bushwhacking along the rim of a volcano crater sounds pretty terrifying! haha Climbing all the high points in every country around the world is a great goal! We plan to visit every country (in our lifetime) and have set a new goal to scuba dive in as many of them as we possibly can. Interesting to hear about all the specific troubles it takes in each country to get in to do these hikes. Hope he hits his goal in the end!
That is awesome! I loved your recent video about scuba diving in mexico :)
I don't know you and I don't have any interest in mountain climbing but this is damn interesting, looking forward to your journey!
Hey, I can help you climbing the highest mountain in Iraq. It's actually in the save Kurdish region.
That's really cool!! I'm currently not trying to accomplish the feat myself - but that's something to think about in the future - once Covid is more under control :)
Loving this series
thank you!
First heard of Eric on the FKT podcast! Great video man!
Thank you!
Awesome keep up the series this is so cool!
Thanks Ben!
mikey, your videos are too great, you need more attention lmao
Thanks Jose!
In 2015, I summited Slovenia's highest peak. In my group, was a Australian priest whose goal was to celebrate Mass on the highest peak of every country. As far as I remember he was past the 100. I remember his name (Fr Morgan Batt), I google around and found an article (catholicleader.com.au/news/brisbane-priest-who-has-climbed-major-mountains-in-europe-scales-highest-peak-in-bulgaria/) where he provides some numbers 217/259 summited peaks. Obviously not countries, but in your quest to find if it is possible...
really cool stuff. the dream
Hi just subscribed what an ambitious challenge! Good luck

Awesome Video Dude, cheers from germany
Thank you!
Nice interview! Been following Eric for a couple of years now. Let me know if you need any tips for the European ones, Managed to complete them last year, although only from a geographic perspective.
That's awesome Adam! Will do :)
Excellent Video, but I was very much distracted by the Ski collection
They are not ALL mine, I have three other roommates - but yes it is an impressive collection lol!
Mountainous Mountain Peaks

Was wondering if you were Canadian in the first video, kokanee shirt confirms

@@name7892 Getting close to 2k now. This interview is high quality content!
just randomly got recommended your videos from youtube and now I'm really interested in getting into mountaineering but have no idea how I would do so. do you have any advice?
I think I would start by getting out and doing some mountains that aren't technical at all - just to get your feet wet. You can learn about the various "Scrambling" grades and work your way up carefully there. You could join a local alpine club - for example in Canada we have the Alpine Club of Canada - which has a really inexpensive membership fee for all its perks. You could also find an intro to mountaineering course - where you'll learn the basics of safe travel, rope skills, etc. Mountaineering is amazing but you want to progress cautiously - you don't wanna go out and redline for seven hours straight - that's a really easy way to scare the crap out of yourself and not want to do it again (not to mention it's dangerous). You could also benefit from watching videos or reading books (Freedom of the Hills is the mountaineer's bible). There's a million ways to grow your skills and experience - but the best way is just being out in the hills - even if it's on a hike to a summit. Have fun and be safe :)
thanks for the advice, I'll be looking into it! I've done some climbing and caving before so hopefully lots of those skills are transferrable
Technicly China and Korea is both in a civil war, but both are 1 countries, so you can skip Taiwan and South Korea (sadly the north has the highest peak)
Finlands highest 1365m 😌
Can’t wait for him to climb the highest peak in holland😂😂😂😂
I don't know anyone who managed to climb the highest peak in Holland, but I know of a quite famous attempt to climb the highest point in Flevoland, NL. It stands at a staggering 7 meters above sea level. Watch here: czcams.com/video/ilQ3B7l0_jo/video.html
ive climbed the hughest point in maldives. super hard whopping 2 meters above sea level. needed pure oxygen canisters
@@smolbo1 wow congratulations that could have ended badly
mt scenery? or do you mean either of the counties?
Try the netherlands, it's like 300m high
Technically Mount Scenery on Saba is the highest with 887 meters :)
remember mike... altitude, big gimmick
Any more details on how I could get invited to some of these international conferences?
Go to MIT, excel at engineering... something like that I would assume
I’d help you hike to the top of Romania’s Mount Moldoveanu
When I am in Romania I will send you a message!
When’s the next episode!
Hopefully next week! Maybe the week after. Doing research right now!
Contact me when you come to Bolivia to climb Sajama (6542-meter volcano).
Will do!!
Man I hope you earn enough revenue to do it!
me too!
