All the smartphone anamorphics have barrel distortion. And especially the 1.55x, you can pull some of that out in post-production or you can put it on the tele lens of your phone and shoot past it. But that is a characteristic of the lens which some people love and some people don’t.
Not bad at all, the barrel distortion is a common cons in this type of lenses. So we have to use our skills to avoind vertical panning and take a look at the building lines to avoid that effect.
Thanks for the rec re: diopters on the close-ups. That attention to detail is what really sets your iphone lens reviews apart. Would love a video on diopters you like for anamorphic use. Finding a +10 that doesn't suck for my moondog lens has been a challenge for me-- has anyone found a good option?
I have 37mm and 58mm, but no 62mm so that’s why I didn’t try them here, but I’m going to order some. I think a +4 is what you need on this. I’ve used Vivitar and Polaroid in the past and they seem ok. Not that many brands make them. These no name ones on Amazon get good reviews though… amzn.to/3LbVdIx. Thanks for watching!
other than the filter size, I wonder how is this MK2 different from the first version. Using the cage takes away some guess work, but still you need to align the vertical and horizontal axis once screwed on. the movement is well dampened and controlled but when you add/remove diopter and ND you are afraid you knock it off axis.
The first version was designed with the smaller phone sensors in mind, so anything prior to the iPhone 13 works fine. Anything from the 13 or later you have to have the MK2 otherwise there’s aberrations, soft edges and overall issues with sharpness.
@@iphoneographers I got the MK1 way back with the Beastgrip universal rig and iPhone 8 Plus .... I mean good luck aligning that thing with the phone camera and adjust the axis of the anamorphic. So I gave up until now but only the first version 1.55 and the pro max phone and cage. I will shoot what I have for now.
Barrel distortion a deal breaker for me personally. Love the idea of it tho

Ordered mine last week. Thanks for the review!

Yep! It’s definitely part of the vibe. And if it’s too much you can remove some distortion in post.

excellent prices
So what, if any, would be the benefit of using this or perhaps the SmallRig anamorphic lens in lieu of the anamorphic lens setting in Filmic Pro?
The anamorphic setting in Filmic Pro is for using a lens like this. You don’t use it otherwise. It desqueezes this widescreen image.

This is a weird question but could you fit this on a C mount tv lens
There are some DIY rigs out there that try that but, never done it.
What other brands use 37mm mount for the lens
Dreamgrip and Helium come to mind. Helium is not making new cages though.
this lens flare is smooth but not feeling the distortion, sandmarc dont have this problem but not as smooth, sandmarc or this?
This one is more robust and you need a cage, so that can be good or bad depending on how you look at it.
Shiftcam or beastgrip?
For more casual use go with Shiftcam for more robust filmmaking setups Beastgrip is great.
Hmmmmm...You didn't seem exactly exited abut this lens...
Ha, I like it. Very nice lens. I personally don’t shoot a lot of 1.55x stuff, but this is great if you do. I’m going to compare it to others soon too.
