- You may have noticed a concrete pad in the middle of a grassed area of a suburban park in West Heidelberg. What is it for and why is it here?

I acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which this video was filmed, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people. I pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging and their extensive historical connection to land, water and country.
10 years for a concrete pad!
Australian councils at their finest 😂
I've lived a couple of blocks from this helipad for many years and I can tell you that it is used far more regularly than 20 times a year. It's mostly used at night and police and ambulance helicopters use it sometimes several times in the one night. The helicopters are often in a hurry and sometimes it seems they're going to land on the houses.
During the Jeff Kennett era, when he would visit Ballarat, he would always come via helicopter. The gold museum (opposite Sovereign Hill) car park was set up as a place to land two helicopters, and an oval at the end of the block could hold a third (for news crews).
You always notice with a helicopter landing they circle the pad before dropping down (maybe to judge the wind?)
Thanks Phillip, you cover a huge range of topics. Im learning a lot!
Great post Philip.
So Rotary Club helped rotary transport.
The land was not in fact parkland, but was part of a road reserve. There used to be a scout hall and a very old private house next door, now both removed. They heliport also served the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital as well, which was the location of the State Reconstructive Surgery Unit at that time (now at St Vincents).
Something I didn't know that I needed to know.
Grew up nearby and lived/worked in the area for many years and never knew about it. Another great presentation.
Wow. Didn't know that. Great detective work again
Ok. I was waiting to hear that it was something secret.
I immediately thought it was going to be for the hospitals but thought ‘oh we’re going to be told it’s some secret military evacuation point’ 😂😂
I road past this once and I always wondered what it was thanks 👍
Im an avid follower of your videos Philip. I was wondering (as a keen rail fan ) if you could do one on the outer circle railway. There are some already but not so comprehensive videos and others on formats that i no longer have (CDs)
Thanks! It is on my list of future topics but a bit lower than some others, mainly because there is this excellent documentary on it that I would highly recommend: outercircleline.com.au
I'll probably get to it eventually but not for a little while
I did notice it while riding along Darebin bike path. Thanks for answering it.
I rode past this one day and was wondering about this, thanks for the info!
Great video. Super interesting.
There’s also a newish rooftop helipad in Preston, Only 1-2 km from this one.
That is a private facility, used by a business.
There’s another one down the road on a private roof
10 years to complete a concrete slab!
10 years to collect the money
Very interesting.
Cool!!
I never know about this - and only a few kilometres away in my neighbourhood. Excellent.
I've run past this several times and never known it's story.
Any idea why it has the almost flower like pattern on it?
it was mentioned that it is the Rotary logo
Someone painted or drew a flower on it about 18 months ago. It was cleaned off, but a ghost of it remains. It's at the end of our street.
You're right! I filmed this a while back. It's since had a renovation too with a new driveway and upgraded path
Can you please de-bunk the theory that a military bunker was built under Dights Falls during WW2? I actually gew up in the house opposite the Helipad.
or do an episode on the bunker
Thanks, good suggestion! I'm aware of the investigations that have taken place over the years - I'll add it to the list :)
I think it is there for helicopters to land on. Is there another reason for them ?
I think it’s good
i thought it was for the hospital ???
It would be for the police helicopter 😳
