- Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins have done a complete 180 and after looking like the worst positioned franchise in the NHL, are now somehow in a playoff spot after everything that has happened. No one motived, losing every game, trading Guentzel, and now they're back with a vengeance to prove something. gotta give them a lot of respect for all they've done, can they hold onto a spot??

Crosby has saved Pittsburgh, he has been and is still the face of the NHL. He is one of a few players with the skill to do what is has done. We all need to enjoy his play.
As a hockey fan I dread the day that Crosby takes the ice for the last time. There have been many superstars over the years. Then there are the elites: Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Howe, a pair of Hulls, and several others. This is the group where Crosby belongs.

I think he got a good bit of hate earlier in his career, but where he is now, he seems to mostly get the respect that he deserves.
For real. They hold him to a standard higher than any other player in the league. If he shows a bit of emotion, they jump on him. If another player smashes their stick in anger, not a peep.
He doesn't exactly get hate but he is a huge cry baby. That hasn't changed through his entire career, but he is a great player, overall

Pretty much every player expresses dissatisfaction one way or another. If the standard of being a crybaby is how Sid behaves, then 90% of the NHL are crybabies.
Don't forget about Malkin. He's stepped it up after looking washed up for most of the year.

Something potentially working against either the Flyers or Capitals catching up is they finish the season against each other. The Flyers have played 80 games, so the most points they can get is 89, which probably won't be enough for that WC2 spot.
It very well could be. Penguins are taking on Bruins, Nashville and Islanders. They could easily lose 2 or even all 3 of those, Capitals are playing Lightning, Bruins and Flyers...they'll likely lose at least 2 of those, Detroit is playing Toronto and then Montreal twice. Montreal is playing lots better so if they lose to Toronto and split the Montreal games or if the Capitals and Detroit won 2 out of 3...hard to think they'd do better with that schedule they'd also only get to 89. Not sure who has the tiebreaker. If Pittsburgh gets 3 of a final 6 points though and tied Philly at 89 I know they have the tiebreaker though. So Philly if they can win out has a pretty good shot given the schedule of their opponents but still I'm not betting against Crosby.

Both the Flyers and the Capitals look defeated. They haven't been playing with that playoff level urgency. PIT and DET have. I would be surprised and disappointed if it isn't PIT or DET. Unless you are a fan of PHI or WAS, I don't see why you'd want to see them make it.

I think the isles stay in 3rd so the only spot left is the second wild card. The flyers only have 2 games left and one of them is against the caps so i think they are out. Detroit has to play the leafs and montreal twice. the caps play tampa, boston and philly. the pens play boston, nashville and the islanders. I think detroit takes WC#2. But the pens control their own fate. If they earn 5 of the 6 possible points, they win out regardless of what the other teams do because they have more regulation wins than the others.

I think it's Pittsburgh. Although I wouldn't count out the Flyers. They had been playing awful but all the sudden when they really needed it they got a massive 4-1 win against the Rangers arguably the best team in hockey and their last 2 games are against the Blackhawks and Capitals. Extremely winnable. Pittsburgh, Washington Detroit all have a bit of a murderer's row in their last few games. If Pittsburgh doesn't take it I think Philly will.
