I have been mesmerised, shattered and destroyed by Rameau's music since I first heard it at the age of fourteen, some forty-three years ago now. It goes far beyond Beauty, but neither does it fully embrace Truth, either. It sets up its own reality, a world of artificiality and stylisation where a simple menuet is as devastating as a Beethoven string quartet. There is more honest tragedy and transcendence in Telaïre's air Tristes apprêts than in the whole of Tristan und Isolde. We have yet to truly plumb the profoundly emotional yet classically restrained depths of Rameau's ineffable genius; to date we have only scratched the surface. The journey goes on...
Arnold: can you imagine she was the cover of Shirley Verrett in l'Africaine for one of her first contracts in 87. She sang Aida title role and Dalila. She is a kind of Falcon soprano and above all a very great artist!
@@foropera She is a very 'truthful' artiste. Her voice is put at the service of the music and the text . The switch to mezzo soprano roles has been a happy and successful one for her .In her early career she was a fine soprano and I remember her luminous voice as soprano in Mahler's Das Klagende Lied many years ago in Nice. She has tackled a huge range of repertoire.
