    Well, that suprised me. I struggle with growls. Probably, 1. because I am very new to metal, and, 2. because I am very old. But, give me credit for trying. This, I liked. The growl seemed to fit where the song was going. I liked it enough that I will probably be exploring more Opeth. So, thank you for that, Ms. Kelly. Can't wait to see where you go next.

    • @rolsen1304
      @rolsen1304 Před rokem +20

      His pronounciation when growling is also pretty good, if you listen while reading the lyrics once you will probably understand 95% on the next listen, even without reading lyrics. I'm so used to it I can understand almost all growling in metal. It's like you get a upgrade to your ears, with a distortion and fuzz filter haha
      Deciphering the lyrics becomes pleasurable, adding to the complexity and layers of the song, and even more to the emotion.

      Practically all Opeth songs have also clean singing parts and softer parts. Also like was said already Char above me they have albums with no growls, but also the whole style of those albums are different. I didn't used to like growls, but Opeth was the band for me that first made me them not bother me and later I learned to love them. Opeth has two songs that have only growl vocals in them.

      I was a metalhead from about 13 years old, but it took until my late 30's before I started getting into growls, and even then it took a while to properly like them. What i liked about Opeth (and now Jinjer) is what you said actually... they both use them where they fit the music, not just doing harsh vocals for the sake of it. After a couple of months of listening to Opeth "growls" just felt completely natural.

  • @Some_Idiot_on_the_Internet

    The Drapery Falls will always be my favourite Opeth song. It was the first one I heard and it was so radically unlike anything I had ever heard before that I sat listening to it, letting myself drift into a sort of trance-like state. I listened to it on repeat for what might have been hours, I don't even know because it was like I wasn't even in my body. When people talk about how music can transport you, that's what it meant, I felt like I left my damn body, like I was in a waking dream. I experienced a chemically unassisted natural high. It sounds so stupid but it happened, it hit me just right like very few artists or songs ever have in my life. Sometimes you hear the exact right song at the exact right time in your life, and I spend my days looking for the next experience like that, the next sound that will take me somewhere.

      For a unique vibe of calm, beautiful melancholy, the whole Damnation album is something you must check out. There are no growls on that one, just calm beauty, however the lyrics are heavy, so depending on what kind of definition it actually is a heavy album.

    It's always so nice to see someone get into Opeth. I know that they have a massive treasure trove of music to dive into. So many songs worth equal consideration.
    Ghost of Perdition is probably the most balanced mix of Opeth's earlier death metal sound and their later progressive rock sound. It also kind of sits right in the middle of their "prime" years. So it's definitely a good introduction, but there are other songs that will showcase Mikael's vocals, both clean and harsh, better. There will also be more brutal guitar riffs, more gorgeous acoustic instrumentals, and just some crazy shit that you cannot possibly see coming.
    I often recommend Harlequin Forest next, because I think it's another really good balance of Opeth's beauty and brutality...but I kind of think you should check out something where Mikael goes even harder on the growls. Blackwater Park might be the right way to go.

    This is Opeth from 1995 to 2010 era, which was a mix of death metal, prog metal and black metal... Opeth went in a more prog rock direction from their 2011 to 2023 era... Mikael Akerfeldt (vocals & guitar) is the only original member, and he remarked that he was "over" death metal by 2010 and wanted to express his more melodic influences... But he still performs Opeth's older songs in concert.
    Opeth released their first album 'Orchid' in 1995 and released 4 studio albums by 1999... their line-up solified by 1999 w/ Peter Lindgren (guitar), Martin Mendez (bass) and Martin Lopez (drums)... eventually Per Wiberg (keyboards) was added to the band.
    Opeth's creative triumph was the album 'Blackwater Park' in 2001, followed by the dual albums released in succession - the heavy record 'Deliverance' (2002) and mellow record 'Damnation' (2003)... the album 'Ghost Reveries' (2005) was another success, but Martin Lopez departed from Opeth, followed soon after by Peter Lindgren... 'Ghost of Perdition' was on "Ghost reveries".
    Opeth returned in 2008 w/ the album 'Watershed'... Martin 'Axe' Axenrot (drums) and Fredrick Akesson (guitar) joining the band... it would also mark the end of Opeth's "death metal" studio albums.
    Opeth delivered a much more mellower record w/ 'Heritage' in 2011... Per Wiberg was replaced by Joakim Svalberg (keyboards) afterwards. Opeth's sound continued to evolve in a more prog rock direction w/ 'Pale Communion' (2014) and 'Sorceress' (2016)... their latest album was 'In Cauda Venenum' (2019) which was recorded w/ English and Swedish lyrics.
    After the covid-19 pandemic, Opeth announced that drummer Martin Axenrot had been replaced by Waltteri Varynen (drums) in 2022 for the tour.
    For 'death metal' Opeth, I recommend the songs - 'When'... 'Heir apparent'... "Master's apprentices"... "The drapery falls"... 'The Leper Affinity'... 🤘🤘💀
    And for the mellower Opeth... the songs - 'Harvest'... 'Windowpane'... 'Face of Melinda'... 'Burden'... 'I feel the dark'... 'The wilde flowers'... 🔥

    Welcome to the world of Opeth, Melisa! They were one of the two bands that made me appreciate growling vocals back in the 90s. The song that started my love affair with Opeth was "Demon Of The Fall" from their 1998 album "My Arms, Your Hearse". If you decide to do another Opeth reaction, this is the song I highly recommend. Now, if you like Mikael's guttural vocals, you should definitely check out Dan Swanö. He's a Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist. But that's going down a deep deep rabbit hole LOL! He's been in so many bands, collaborated with so many people, including Mikael in Bloodbath.... Some of his past and present bands include Edge Of Sanity, Nightingale, Pan.Thy.Monium, Odyssey, Unicorn ... I would recommend to start with his only solo album called "Moontower" (prog metal with growling vocals) and then try Edge Of Sanity "Crimson", which is a concept album with just one song exactly 40 minutes long. Have fun!

    Good review this! Always nice to hear someone discover this lovely band. Mikael is a fun lad
    Also, if anyone cares at all: Pronunciation of Swedish vowels/umlauts
    Å = kinda like "ou" in Four
    Ä = kinda like "ea" in Bear (this one is tricky to find a english example of)
    Ö = exacly like "u" in Survey
    Edit: Oh and yeah Jinjer has said in interviews that they take a LOT of inspiration from Opeth, so not a surprise that if you liked Jinjer you like these guys as well:)

    You chose one of the best songs by Opeth, yet there are many others just as good. Mikael doesn't growl on his newer albums anymore. Yet live, they bring the old stuff, still... He is by far the best vocalist i've seen live so many times. Never misses a note, he's funny as hell! And also: don't underestimate his friend behind the keys, coz he sings the backings so well! Great to explore different genres in your video's. I did struggle with the accent for a bit tho :p Oh and btw: i take my dad who is 73 to opeth shows... he compares them to pink floyd sometimes.

    It's bittersweet to see so many reaction-videos giving proper credit to Opeth.
    When I was blessed by friends with Opeth, I was a mere 13yr old (2003), angsty, long hair, metal head who wore jeans and band t-shirts. In those naïve and early days of my life, I KNEW i was listening to a musical gem. A musical anomaly. I showed their music to others to only be brushed away along with comments like, "i don't listen to that emo stuff'." Little did they know they were listening to music that was ahead of the time.

    Honestly the best way to enjoy Opeth is really take one of their album and play it all the way through. Every song is a journey by itself but together it is usually spectacular as a full listen. I have not really delved into their latest albums as i've been busy with other bands as of late but i very much doubt they would be bad. Blackwater Park is probably my all time favourite album so far. Followed by Ghost reveries. But Deliverance and the Damnation albums is also great... It is incredibly hard to pick any particular song as a favourite. But maaaybe Blackwater park? man it is rough to choose one.

    Every Opeth album that was released between 1999's "Still Life" and 2005's "Ghost Reveries" is a perfect 5-star Opeth album. They had by far their best lineup during these years. The vibe changed a bit starting with the follow-up to this album, 2007's Watershed, when founding 2nd guitarist Peter Lindgren quit the band, to be replaced by former Arch Enemy guitarist Fredrik Akesson, and longime drummer Martin Lopez quit and got replaced with Martin Axenrot. Two great musicians, but the dynamic definitely changed a bit. Watershed and its subsequent albums are OK, but I almost never listen to them whereas I listen to Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, and Ghost Reveries all the time.
