- Meet the brains behind the new Disney series set in a sci-fi Nigeria, that has a certain 'Wakanda' feel.
A 2018 BBC interview propelled the pan-African creative team of @Kugalimedia into a collaboration with Disney.
The result? “Iwájú,” a six-episode animated series set a Lagos of the future.
As the series premieres, the filmmakers share their journey, the challenges of bridging tradition and progress, and the potential of “Iwájú” to empower African voices and bring about global understanding.

Love seeing afrofuturism getting a much deserved shine. Most people think Marvel invented the genre with their Black Panther movie when that is far from the truth
This is Africanfuturism not Afro
It's africanfuturism.
I'm impressed. I was doing animation for over a decade but i stopped for another thing. Doing animation in Africa is hard; i admire the perseverance of these Nigerians. I wash them the best.
Go Lagos! 🇳🇬🇳🇬 Go Disney!! ❤❤
Omg I am so proud of Nigeria 🇳🇬❤ 🇬🇭 Opening up the borders for African representation into a broader audience. I cant wait to watch 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thank you all for watching and for your comments, and wishing plenty of success to the creative minds at @Kugalimedia!
Great! Now that we have your attention, as a Nigerian just want to tell you it's okay to focus on more positive, PROGRESSIVE, stories about Africa. You'll get even more engagement. That way you can start to balance the countless negative, poverty, corruption, fraud stories you have focused on since this channel premiered. For each TB Joshua story, you can profile how Nigeria built one of Africa's strongest banking systems in under 15 years. Or Nigeria's amazing progressive contemporary art scene (happy to share leads), the Igbo apprentice system, or major tech movements in Nigeria, Kenya, SA and elsewhere. And on and on.
Werey BBC Africa, evil people
Iwaju is the best thing I've watched this year😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Kudos to the ppl involved on this.
That's how you do it.
You don't twist original histories and characters, you create new ones!
100%
Do you watch it? Is it good
I have never bought any movie in the cinema but if this comes out I will surely buy it
Naija to the World ❤🇳🇬
This is great, families across the world will love this
🇲🇽
I have watched the Iwaju animation series. It is really nice. kudos to the naija boys and to disney for their partnership
Now all disney has to do is bring disney plus to nigeria so that nigerians can watch an animation set in nigeria about nigerians.
Love the idea! Disney really hit the spot!
Wonderful except people in Nigeria can't even watch it cuz there isn't Disney Plus in Nigeria
Watchd all 6episodes yesterday n i LOVED it
Disney performed a classic business move: buy the competition.
Yea. Annoying. As the name KUGALI sounds way better on Africa. WE are Africans. Even Victoria falls has an African name. But was cleared out. Dammit!
Amazing show! We want season 2 and an amusement park ride! 🎉
Let's not rush it yet 😌
We want Disneyland 😁😁😁
Thus movie is perfect. It portrays what is true in a way it can be easily swallowed yet maintaining a fun environment which is good for all ages. Looking forward to more of this
Finally some that showcases our people😊
Very BIG Respect and Blessings 💪🏾💪🏾
It's a great idea and am glad it came through
Go Tolu and the entire team
This is so exciting! I hope to see more Africanfuturism stories!
Iwaju! take the lead and more grease to your elbow. Proudly African✊
Good Job Disney, now we want an African princess Disney movie too.

Glad to see the Foward Concept being pushed in reality & in then minds of African youth! Natural settings.
This is a win for the yoruba people. Congratulations yoruba people. I envy you a lot.
Nigerians*
@@jeibby6 yup. Its always the silly people that contributed nothing to their tribes that make the most noise, you don't see dangote or femi or obi bragging and flaunting or being tribalistic like these jobless simpletons with no merit or notable achievements to their names. Forever vicariously feeding their flimsy egos through the achievements of others haha
Ahh makes sense the champion racoon of Nigeria
@jeibby6 yorubas are Nigerians. What do you mean by divide in the two cultures?
That's how you respond to a challenge 😂 you acquire!
Well done Kugali 👏🏾 😊
Fab!!!
Wow
Great video 💯📸💯
That's my cousin. 💛💛

So lets be honest about that too...✌️
🌟Exciting news! promises to be a captivating journey into Afrofuturism. Can't wait to see this vibrant blend of culture and imagination! 🎬🔮
Why can’t I find it on Disney plus?🤔
The taste of the pudding in the eating...
I thought Nigeria no get light o 😂😂😂
🎉🎉❤🤎🖤
Unfortunately its not available to watch in Nigeria
It's airing on DSTV in April.
Well finally, Disney waking up! After all the rubbish they have been creating and retelling the same lame tales...it makes sense to get Kugali onboard! Vibrant and exciting young Africans who have a story to tell!.it's about time!
Old I love this but it looks sloppy a little like the writers where I love with the story but not the animators
Just make sure they pay them well! Love seeing my black people win.
They’re not black, they’re African and the movie is clearly African centred. Don’t come here now and say black cos if it was a negative story, you ppl would say it’s African not black
@@YT-xk5jl well you sound dumb and foolish because I’m African so I don’t know who “you people” are.
My comment nonetheless stands olodo. Black people. Period. What’s with the unnecessary divide.
Disney?! 😂😂😂 No thanks brothers, my Kenyan eyes will not be supporting this. Congrats, go independent next time your country has all the resources you need and this continent has more if you need it
Oh shut up.
That’s a shame, you are missing a great show 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
@@mrcsquestionsandanswers2673 I'm typing I'm not talking so I can't shut up 😂
@@Willow-cw9te no thanks 😂 I'm good.
Where is the diversity? Snow White in the Middle Ages is designed to be diverse, but in Lagos in the future there is not a single non-African person to be seen.
disney? no thanks
What i don't like is how there is mass begging in a futuristic lagos which isn't even that bad in the present day so it's sickening to say the least
Which one is mass begging
God please, let's not allow Disney to corrupt our culture and values with their woke BS.
It all starts harmless. I hope we stay true to ourselves.
Shut up
My thought exactly..cos na so e take dey start ooo
Good to know you share my concern, those guys do not appreciate our cultures, norms and ethics. God help us sha
You do know woke means black or woman.
Jesus... Y'all know that woke is synonymous with black culture, right? Common themes of afrofuturism talks about feminism, reclamation, and awareness to racial/social injustices. It's woke by definition. I know this... And I'm white!
Not a fan of Disney and will never be a fan. So I don’t know what to make of this as an African. I’m also disappointed that they are not speaking in an African language and then adding subtitles for people to understand. That would have been impressive. At the end of the day, there’s nothing special about making any movie in English, lots of cultures do it. Would have loved to hear an African language promoted or the global world.
Our show has a lot of Yoruba and pidgin English, as well as regular English, because the story is set in Lagos and that is how Lagosians speak. Are you disappointed that we made the characters speak how we actually speak in Lagos?
Why go with Disney ? Go alone...disney is dangerous LGBTq
