  • The Frick mansion is a feast for the eyes, created to house our incredible art collection but also as an artwork in and of itself. Our ongoing renovation project aims to restore the building’s historic opulence-down to the last detail. In this video, Jenna Nugent, Curatorial Project Manager, introduces the work done on passementerie, the trimmings and other decorative elements that adorn draperies and wall and furniture upholstery. Follow along as we travel to Paris, to the workshop of Verrier Passementerie, where director Anne Anquetin explains the process of producing new trims to complement or replace the Frick’s original models.

Wow! So much incredible information in such a short video! I wish it had spent more time showing the looms in the French workshop!!

Lovely video. It would be more interesting to understand the full process of research and specifications for the recreations for the restored decor.

Would UV film on the windows help? I assume you cannot replace the actual windows/glass as it would not be historic.

I don't think the window panes are still the same from the time when the original Frick mansion was built. You need a much better protections against burglary and heat loss nowadays. The thicker window panes will already offer more protection against UV-light. But silk can disintegrate from other reasons too. Silk is often weighted to make it more stiff. And the materials used for this process can damage the fibers over the years.
