  • The South North Water Transfer Project, also recognized as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, is a massive infrastructure initiative in China with the ambitious aim of annually redirecting 44.8 cubic kilometers (44.8 billion cubic meters) of fresh water. This undertaking addresses water scarcity in the arid and industrialized northern regions through the implementation of three distinct canal systems:
The Eastern Route, which follows the Grand Canal's course.
The Central Route, originating from the upper reaches of the Han River and extending via the Grand Aqueduct to Beijing and Tianjin.
The Western Route, commencing from three Yangtze River tributaries near the Bayankala Mountain and extending to provinces such as Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Ningxia.

I mean China has had great Canal system since Sui dynasty. It was so unpopular when it was built that it was the main reason their government was toppled along with Korea invasion. Also building larger and larger canal system has diminishing returns as more and more water is now susceptible to evaporation loss.
