  • With the growing popularity of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and vast variety of head units and options, it can be a great way to customize your audio/nav experience to your needs. In this case, I installed a Sony XAV-AX5000 into my NC2 Miata with Bose, retaining factory Bose amp/speakers, steering wheel controls, and adding parking brake bypass and reverse camera! I’ll show you components of installation and see below for the detailed wiring diagram, as I don’t go in depth on that in the video. Special thanks to Cameron for assisting filming/install!

    Excellent video! You have given me the courage to try this in my 2007 NC, and you have reassured me that an initial failure is not the end of the world. And, you brought back a fond memory of my Dad, who once told me: "Do you know what the most expensive component is in any piece of electronics? The smoke! If the smoke ever leaks out, it's ruined."

      @@FlywheelFilms I wound up going with the Pioneer DMH-2660NEX. In retrospect, I might should have saved up and got the 4660 to save room behind the unit! Adding the line converter took up a good amount of room, and in the future, I might add some extra wire to relocate it a bit further back. After going through all of it, I think I could do it in about half the time! I had the same issue with switching those two wires for the steering wheel adapter, but after seeing your video, I knew just what to do! :) It came out great, very tickled! Again, thanks for the info, that really helped!

    Having just completed this project I've got a couple of tips to add, particularly for UK owners.
    1. For my 2012 with bose and steering wheel buttons, I ordered " FKIT-MAZDA-17" from Dynamic Sounds for £99. It's plug and play, so no headaches as seen in this video butchering wiring harnesses together. The kit includes the facia and all wiring. If you don't have bose, you can get a similar kit for almost half the money from the same company. On completion, you'll find you've only used the bigger of the two wires originally plugged in to the original head unit, the smaller is left redundant.
    2. The sneaky bolt holding in the side of the original head unit is located RHS, so accessible in the same way as the video, just mirrored for our right hand drive cars.
    3. Best tip here! I also fit a reverse camera and tried the coat hanger technique to no avail (but plenty of finger cuts!). Make it easy, open the boot lid and then half open the roof (mines a hardtop). Then feed the wire from the cabin to the boot while being able to actually see where the wire goes with the added benefit of seeing what needs to be avoided (roof folding mechanisms!). With the roof half open you can see all the gaps you need to feed through. You need to open the boot lid first, then the roof, and ideally cover the boot top to avoid scratching against the roof cover.
    4. I located my cheap amazon cam just above the number plate, and had to widen a hole behind the number plate using a drill to fit the wire.

      I see there's another kit for NCFL1/2 called Incar Tec FK-377 with a Bose Amplifier Interface. Why would they sell that additional interface since one you installed, Dynamic Sounds FKIT-MAZDA-17, works fine with Bose as well?

    Nice video. Did your sony come with those audio left and right plugs that wire to your harness?? I think I need those for mine. I am installing a new radio and I am trying to retain the factory bose amp and speakers. Do you have to use those rca output plugs to connect to the factory amp or can I just wire it up like normal?

    • @FlywheelFilms
      @FlywheelFilms  Před 2 lety

      Sorry for the delay, the Sony did not come with the RCA plugs, I had bought those off of someone who made them. But they effectively have to be RCA connectors with wound cable so you can separate and wire positive/negative. That sends an un-driven signal to the amp instead of using the wiring harness powered L/R lines

And yes, the sound EQ changes for NC and ND with roof down, at least for hardtop options. It's actually dictated by the Bose amp I believe, which I kept in this install.

    • @FlywheelFilms
      @FlywheelFilms  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately they don't. Most aftermarket cameras don't have that capability as it would require very precise calculations with the steering rack input and car dimensions, etc.

    • @FlywheelFilms
      @FlywheelFilms  Před 2 lety

      I believe the RCA connectors allow for non-driven signal out of the head unit. If you try to use the built-in speaker wires, it may result in something different because the head unit will try to “drive” the amp which is already driving the speakers. Unless you don’t have the Bose system.

      @@FlywheelFilms thank you. Two more questions if you don't mind. #1 Does the image from rear camera pop up automatically once R-gear is set or you have to press a reverse button on the screen? #2 Does the screen dim itself automatically when you turn on the head lights? In EU we must drive with head light on all the time so I wonder if the screen is dimmed during the day light, which may be quite difficult to use, low screen visibility. Is there any button to additionally control screen brightness?

    • @FlywheelFilms
      @FlywheelFilms  Před 2 lety

      Yes, because I connected reverse camera to reverse lights, it is triggered to come on when going into reverse automatically, no need to tell screen. Also it does have a dimmer, but you can either not wire it to dim or you can set in the menu to always be bright and not dim even with lights

      @@FlywheelFilms I'm looking for a Sony radio now and I see that your model has double USB port. Does it mean you can have phone plugged, using Google maps and listen to music from 2nd USB port at the same time? Because I read a comment of Sony XAV-AX3005DB user, single USB port, and having sound from Google maps and listening to the music from the plugged phone simultaneously is not possible on this model. I'd appreciate your comment here, since there's a quite big price difference between these 2 units. BTW. Yes, RCA cables have 5V required to support built-in Bose amplifier, they are rather not going to work if soldered to regular "Sony wires".

      I can really recommend daytime running lamps (DRL) instead of the regular fog lights. First mod I did to my recently bought NC. There are several CZcams videos to be found on this topic.
      Replace lamps/lights can be found at mx5 parts (UK) or ilmotorsport (Germany) or cabriohoeve (Netherlands)
      Really worth the effort especially because they turn on when the engine starts. They can even dim when you turn on the regular lights.
      Regarding the dimming of the screen this happens if you turn on the lights. Not with daytime running lights installed. But this can als be adjusted on the head unit.
      Thanks for the video by the way. Made the install of my Sony AX5550D much easier.
      Next mods will be rear camera and an different center console. 😉

    Can the 10mm security bolt be removed without removing the plastic "wings"? I'd like to see if I have the magical combination of extensions to get to that bolt before doing a lot of disassembly.
    Update: I did some checking myself. I was able to get to that security bolt without having to remove the console and "wings". That's the good news. Bad news is, it fell down somewhere into the nether regions of the area next to the head unit. I should be able to find it when I do the install.

  • @pilkjaer
    @pilkjaer Před 3 lety +2

    It causes me pain to watch you removing that cental console. Handbrake cover can be easily removed separately which makes the removal process of the console 1000 times easier. And yeah, that side screw is a pain in the bottom to remove/fit. One can use something adhesive(like putty or tape) to make screw sit firm in the socket in order to avoid dropping it. Also, put something on the gear shifter shaft(knob, towel, piece of foam). It's very easy to hurt yourself or scratch/damage panels.
    If you remove glove box you can also get access behind the unit in case you need to adjust the cables behind it.
    If you remove trim behind the seat you can get big hole that give you access to the compartment that stores the roof. Mybe one can find a way to get into trunk from there. That way you can just run cable along the central console straight from the radio unit. I would advice to put additional usb-socket in the lockable compartment between the seats. That way you can place your phone there for charging. Also, on PRHT models the cover for the soft roof release mechanism handle is a perfect place to mount your GoPro. If you have usb socket in the compartment below you can also get unlimited power to your GoPro :) Cables for the socket can be routed via central console and you can get power from cigarette lighter. I did this mod this weekend and I highly recommend it.
    Have you been able to solve a problem that when you start a car it temporary cuts the power to the radio? Currently i wired in Amazon Echo Dot to get playback via Bluetooth and it takes a while to boot it after the power drop. I guess Sony unit is not fast to start either. Do you still have the same problem/behavior? Or does it work different on cars with keyless start?
    Can steering wheel buttons be reprogrammed via controller or in the unit?
    Also, when i got my NC3.75 i also thought that I would need camera or parking sensor. But the car is so tiny that i don't see why one need it. Considering that unit suppors this, shure, why not.. It could be a nice project to try to use back camera for recording as a dash cam or track cam.
    I'm also considering making same upgrade but i still do like the retro look of the stock bose unit. Also i will need to find a unit that supports wireless andriod auto. Maybe something for the future. I agree with you that Bose speakers and amp are more than enough. They are really good.
    Thank you for the video and schematics. It sure is helpful.
