I honestly I think the worst thing about the Super Mutants in Fallout 3/4 is that they're entirely motiveless. Sure you could argue they're just trying to make more Super Mutants through kidnapping, but honestly from a surface level playthrough you'd never really think that, they're just big green/yellow monster men with guns.
And I'm not trying to say like "Hurrr durrr Bethesda baad where's my daddy the Master" but like, even a simple good/evil/neutral motivation, an actual cause behind Super Mutants, perhaps they're trying to rebuild the East Coast but their rapidly diminishing intellect is making that near impossible, maybe they're under the impression that they're actually helping people by exposing them to FEV, hell maybe they came so far East because smarter mutants/more organized Factions ran them out of the West and they didn't stop until they hit the ocean.
But because they lack any actual motivation they're just a 'group of bad guys' to kill, and so Fawkes or Strong both fail to actually have anything to identify with other than being exceptional cases. And so there's no reason not to agree with the BOS when they just turn around and say "Yeah exterminate the mutants, they bad" because the games don't want to give you any reason to make that a choice
And I won't even go into my whole spiel of "If you're gonna pick a lane stick to it" with the BOS trying to switch back to a more traditional BOS style

Some interesting factors that would explain all this.
Maxson back in FO3 and before that was effected by people calling him probably the Last of The Maxsons.
The Elders wanted this Maxson to carry the legacy of The First Maxson, Founder of The Brotherhood and Lyons was his mentor.
Considering Maxson was with Sarah on the field from an early age Maxson knows only the Filthy of DC. The Mutants of Vault 87 (most of them at least) are ruthless and they show no mercy.
Maxson has felt pain. He lost his Mentor and his crush but also Friend Sarah. Maxson is like Anakin....
Maxson witnessed his brothers and sisters die in combat, his friends and perhaps familiar faces (Lone Wanderer perhaps) but let's not forget the Outcasts.
Maxson based himself to the Codex due of His name and due of his experiences so far. And he somehow (probably with luck) killed the Deathclaw that gaved people the hope they needed to get from the Maxson
Maxson is only 20 years old during FO4 and he carries the Leadership of one of the greatest factions before even become 20
I don't excuse his reasoning to some things, but I understand his logic behind his words and actions to some extent.
The Brotherhood tries to get out of a dark time.
And Maxson is trying to deal with the death of many
His memories though... They make the reason he is like this.
He hates the mutants because they made his people risk their life's.
He hates perhaps himself a bit because of the incident when he was a kid that night was the reason Sarah died in combat. (Laser wounds are not easy to heal)
I hope the Brotherhood in the Future be better...

I mean let's put things into perspective here, the East Coast Brotherhood hasn't met any good Super mutants. And out of all of that exist on the east coast there's only four good ones that we know of.
Fawkes, Uncle Leo, Erickson, and Strong. With both Fawkes and Strong showing that they're still aggressive despite being reasonable.
They have been in at least two wars with the Super Mutants of the Captial Wasteland. While Lyons was right to the fight against the mutants to save the people, it also nearly broke the entire chapter and caused a significant portion to split off. So Lyons' war against the Super Mutants would be unpopular outside of those most loyal to him. Even then some of those disagreed with the war but did it because he was the Elder.
The second war saw Sarah Lyons die in battle against the mutants and who knows how many else. But it put an end to the mutant threat in Capital Wastes for good.
With those reasons it is no wonder why the East Coast Brotherhood became zealots in wanting all mutants gone because all they do is kill. Same with Feral Ghouls which are mindless monsters that attack anything that moves. And no one knows what causes a Ghoul to become feral either.
The Brotherhood also doesn't have any real information on what a synth is beyond what the Commonwealth knows and that's being humanoid machines that are being used to replace people. When they're more like clones with a chip in their head.

To add on to Captain Enclave's response, the Enclave didn't just tame deathclaws. They made an entirely new species of sentient deathclaws, able to speak and think for themselves. They made their own colony and even allowed humans to integrate into it with them. They were mostly wiped out by Frank Horrigan (the Enclave made customized power armor for him and he was almost the size of a super mutant behemoth) but at the very least two of them survived, both male. One of the creators confirmed that the sentient gene is carried by the males, so it's canon that they could come back in future games. Tactics took this idea and made the Midwest BOS more open minded, allowing ghouls, super mutants, and even sentient deathclaws into their ranks, so its possible that that particular fan art would actually exist in the Fallout universe. Even though Tactics isn't really confirmed as canon, I like to believe it is lol.

A cool Fallout sequel I would like to see is them going to Chicago for the next one and retconning Fallout tactics to fit their lore since it's not "canon". It could take place in Chicago, with some outer-city Midwest locations to explore like in Fallout Tactics. They could bring back the enclave and resurface that old lore with the military base they have out there and make it basically like the last surviving chapter of the enclave. Just like in Fallout 4, you can join factions and build them. You can play a role in building the enclave up again.
We know Bethesda loves the Brotherhood and even threw them into Fallout 76. They could bring them back again, but the midwestern style BOS, which has a different approach to them since they're akin to bringing mutants, ghouls, and wasteland tribals into their brotherhood, which would make them different from the fascist brotherhood of steel, lol.
I remember watching an Oxhorn cover FO Tactics lore and he said the only plausible ending they could use if they were ever to bring back the Midwest Brotherhood is where the war with the calculator led them to sacrifice a lot and they basically needed to start over again, so during that time, the east coast and west wouldn't hear about them for years, and in this hypothetical Fallout 5, when we play as whoever, they're kinda on their feet again and control a good sub-section of Chicago and have outposts around like the NCR and watch over citizens and whatnot. The rest could be up for interpretation for the rest of the factions and the end goal.

They recreuit pretty much everyone who is willing to join them including ghouls, super mutants even intelligent deathclaws and sapient robots (wich means they would recruit synths too if they could), but they dont to this because they are just tolerant, they do it because they need as much manpower as they can get
They also bring order and protection to the region
And at the same time these are the same guys that have slaves, concentration camps (called forced labor camps or gulars by some npcs), a secret police that exists to silence anyone who could taint the midwest BoS reputation (called inquisitors in game), they even crucify their enemies as a warning for anyone who tries to challenge them

No. No the Brotherhood of Steel under Elder Maxson is not evil. There are much more militant and proactive but they are not evil.
Elder Maxson was more or less raised by Elder Maxson and the Brotherhood Knights at the Citadel, and he has more or less combined the mission of the Brotherhood of Steel with Elder Lyon's creed of actively pursuing threats to the citizens of the Wastes; Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, Raiders.
However the downside of Elder Lyon's leadership and style of command left the Brotherhood in danger of breaking completely due to lack of manpower, forward thinking, and inability to create stability inside of the Capital Wasteland.
Eventually he died and his daughter Sarah Lyon's took control of the Brotherhood only to fall in action, my personal theory is that she was assassinated by some more Orthodox members of the Brotherhood who sought to make an end of the Lyon's line, and eventually Maxson was made Elder of the Capital Chapter. Having proven himself in combat already Maxson then further solidified the Brotherhood's mission and forces by reuniting the Brotherhood Outcasts into the Main chapter as well as greatly expanding in Elder Lyon's mission. He began to recruit openly, his scribes began to recreate Enclave armor and weapons tech as well as study the creatures of the wastes for medicinal uses.
This expansion in man power and tech allowed him to destroy Shepard's Super Mutant Army, or at least I believe that was Elder Maxson I am a bit fuzzy on the timeline of that event, and create an Ordenstatt out of the Capital Wasteland.
Cue some years later and his recon teams report in to what may be the largest danger Humanity has faced since the Great War. An amoral group of scientists have pushed science to far in the wrong direction creating Synthetic Humans, Humans that have been proven to be able to be controlled with singular code phrases. These walking talking Manchurian Agents are a Pre-War fear made manifest and so much worse. We see these agents in action and the absolute damage they can do to civilization in both the Broken Mask incident as well as what Mayor McDonough did in Diamond City. So this 20 year old Elder, who we can discover has become a heavy imbiber of both Whiskey and Tobacco, seeks to **protect** the people of the Commonwealth and comes storming in on his Great Prdwyin.
Now many people point towards the Requisitioning of Supplies sidequest as proof of the Brotherhood being evil, despite the fact that the Resident Paladin approves of paying the Settlers substantially for the supplies as well as being an unofficial and unsanctioned under the board mission by the Quartermaster.
And we have never seen the Brotherhood kill or injure a non Feral Ghoul so I am honestly not sure where that conjecture comes from.
Now granted the Brotherhood does have issues, they are dogmatic, authoritarian (as befitting an Ordenstatt), and arrogant. They turn too quickly on one of their best and greatest members, though granted considering just what fears the Gen 3 Synths invoke and the damage they can do the Paranoia can perhaps be forgiven, and are derisive at best towards *outstanding* companions such as Mayor John Hancock (The . . .what 3rd most powerful and influential man in the Commonwealth behind Maxson and the General?) and and Detective Nick Valentine.
If I HAD to place them on the Alignment chart then I would place them squarely on Lawful Neutral or lawful good.

    • @trost7860
      @trost7860 Před rokem +3

@@weegeeclaus695 I’ve always seen the BoS as a lawful neutral faction until fallout 3 and 4. They only helped themselves, retroactively helping others in the wastes. Fallout 3 they’re completely out of character being lawful good even outright overtly helping out the wasteland with project purity. Fallout 4 they’re lawful evil. The commonwealth BoS is an authoritarian regime with citizens that are filled with religious dogma that believe that all mutants need to be cleansed and that they’re above the lowly settlers of the wasteland.
In Fallout 3 the BoS of the capital wasteland shot all ghouls on sight, with the commonwealth BoS being from the capital wasteland we can assume they also do. They even treat Hancock very similarly to Valentine if you bring him to the Prydwen. They absolutely hate *all* nonhumans. Non feral ghouls, feral ghouls as well as the synths and super mutants we know they’re against.
The BoS has always wanted to protect people of the wastes but in the worst way possible. They’re the inverse of give a man a fish you feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish you fed him for life. They don’t want to educate people on how to properly use technology to help the people of the wastes protect themselves and improve their lives. The BoS has only wanted tech for themselves because their religion makes them truly believe they are the only people on the planet left that can responsibly keep and use this technology even though it can change the wastes forever like we see in Fallout 3.

It would make the ethical decisions of future games way more interesting as well as create an overarching “big bad” for the series to have. So now the BoS are really worked up. Not only are there Supermutants here, but the Enclave fractured with some either subjecting while the other help.
Come to think about it... I just described Skyrim essentially. Not exactly but a somewhat similar plot. Still be hecking fun to experience if handled right an not like FO4 story choices lol

The east coast BOS nearly broke protecting a few scattered settlements full of ungrateful wastelanders and fought thankless wars on their behalf, suffering and seeing many die along the way.
It's understandable then that when Maxon came of age, being surrounded by death and war and suffering and wastelanders who'd rob and kill him as soon as talk to him, he and the chapter as a whole became embittered.
It makes sense that when he took over, he'd cancel these wars, leave the wastelanders to their fate, still recruit those who were willing and able and did what needed to be done to make the brotherhood thrive.
And thrive, they have. They operate a fleet of vertibirds from a mobile FOB, the Prydwin and are able to conduct a war on a large scale. Like it or not, Maxon's methods work, and why should they care for the mutants? 99.99% of supermutants on the east coast are barely concious bloodthirsty monsters and exterminating them to the last is a favor to litterally everybody else, clearing out the raiders and feral ghouls makes life better for those who live in the commonwealth.
Sure the brotherhood are dicks, but that's the only kinda way to build a real state. A strong hand that can destroy threats and keep people safe. Especially in a cruel place like the wasteland

Same here, and it makes sense because in Fallout 2 and New Vegas, it's shown that they're withering and decaying because they're stuck in their old beliefs (being xenophobic, isolationist and just keeping technology away from mankind).
But they made compromises. Such as the FO2 BOS coexisting with the NCR. The FO3 and FT BOS opening to outsiders and FNV BOS finally lifting the lockdown
"We have to embrace change to survive"

  • @ulric8445
    @ulric8445 Před 4 měsíci +2

Different Chapters have different responses to the situation, as much as 4 paints the BOS as just discount Enclave, you can see it in your own perspective where Maxson is doing all of this cos his name is renown in the BOS thus sticking to the book more than anyone else
Midwest BOS doesn't have a Maxson and desperate situations require desperate measures thus allowing the recruitment of outsiders
New Vegas BOS got fucked by the NCR so they're kinda fucked in the middle of a shit flinging contest between a bunch of furry larpers and a self proclaimed army thats over-extended beyond what they're capable of holding, and Mr House
and then 1 and 2 BOS are more on the mysterious preacher side where they like to be left alone but if you show potential you can get their cool tech, plus the Enclave are a thing in 2 so it makes sense for the BOS to be more active than hidden
