Note about the video:
In the video one of my decisions was to add a chromecast wall in front of the artists. I expect this to be a controversial move, as this could undermine the artist's ability to focus if there is not front blinds on the desk. Without an optional front blind, individual artists could not opt out of seeing the chromecast screen and therefore it could be a distraction. The idea here is to have the room and workstation area double as a screening room, so that less transportation time and room space is needed when working. I am aware that there are animation desks available which are designed to block peripheral vision, and this is another variation on that. Although I haven't yet seen a desk of this kind which can be converset to a standing desk. That would be a cool thing to invent... I digress. What I'm saying is... I know, the chromecast wall isn't without it's flaws. It might not be feasible or popular, but it would be an interesting thing to try.

Your studio setup reminded me of a show called Shirobako (have you seen it? it's the anime about anime)
A lot of the pipeline you described is further explored in that series, and I highly suggest it to anyone interested in animation.
I love Shirobako! Super insightful and still quite entertaining
yeaahh dude i was checking out that anime before this but I haven't watched it yet. i will definitely watch the series i know I will love it haha
Wooaaaahh gildedguy!!! Imma sign up and animate something! I never knew you’d be here...........it’s an honour to meet u........
Btw thnx Howard for teaching me a lot about animation.......in March 21 I’ll join the competition👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😊😆
I watched the show and its actually very fascinating I recommend it for every animator out there to watch it
I have never animated anything but a ball falling to the ground. But I think I’m going to use this as an excuse to animate something epic!
Guess I'm not the only one who dreams of doing something like this lol.
You got that right
You got that right
I'm there
I’m so excited to start a short film for this festival
This is so useful!!! My goal in life is to create an animation studio and this gives me some insight into how that might look ! Thanks for this video!
love your clothing style howard, super cosey, wintery even if its just sitting at a computer.
Hahaaa yeah it was cold in my house and i didn’t turn the heating on so that i would save on energy bills :D
That was a really good video on what a animation studio of that size would take. I liked the design you had for everything and it brought real insight for people like me who want to one day expand into a team. Thank you for another great video
I'm from south Africa and I really love animation I ain't got a studio but I dream to have one
Pretty unique video , I don't really think anyone's really done a kind of hypothetical if I had a studio this is how I'd do it video
I'm glad you starting this kind of move to push animators as it helps someone who's pretty small and unskilled just gain the experience needed so thanks mun.
Also it says on the FAQ of the film contest info that i can ask a question on the bottom of the page do I ask there or just on the discord?
Hey thanks man! Really glad to see you’ve put your name into the contest and i look forward to seeing what you come up with! Probably in the discord general chat is the best and fastest way to ask questions about the contest
Can't wait to see another animation from you wish you the best!
Love your videos! As a professional animator I could never give up my four walls! But I have one of the weirder and more archaic jobs in animation; I am a Timing Director, so I fill out Exposure Sheets while studying the Animatic and the Boards. I decide/write out every single inbetween, camera move and scene cut in pencil on X-Sheets, and boy does it get messy and spread out at times!
Oh woow a timing director! That’s so cool! I imagine it to be quite a tricky job. Do you send timing charts to a different country? Or does it take place locally?
@@HowardWimshurst Oh definitely overseas, it developed into a written language of its own; we have special symbols for Antics, Slow ins/outs, Overshoots, Follow Through, Holds, Settles. In fact we use both Ease In and Slow Out: they technically mean the same thing but Eases are only used for Camera Moves!
Some overseas animators don't even have access to the animatic, they just get the boards and the sheets. Editors are super talented people but they can accidentally put a character on 6x steps when it should be a casual walk, or hold a breakdown as a key just because it's a pretty drawing. So I have to account for stuff like this, and it often means re-imagining an entire scene in my mind then writing out how I'd like it to be done, all without having to draw.
I'm going into my second season on American Dad! It's one of the few cartoons left where every single drawing overseas is still done in pencil first, it's actually a hand drawn show! The acting is simple, but the action, if you step through it, is some of the tightest and cleanest for a primetime show. It's a nice blend of ones and twos, typically. I'm very conscious of what a dick move it is to put too much on ones, haha.
Thank you for this opportunity! I'm a hobbyist illustrator who also loves studying movement and anatomy, and have had friends over the years continually tell me I should venture out into illustration/animation professionally. I've never properly studied animation -- so I think this will be a great step to just do it and learn (:
Your video provokes me to draw my own blueprints for a small animation studio. 😃
I too want to make my own studio...but before that happens I need business and animation experience beforehand..thank you for this video now I know what to expect somewhat for the future of light nation animation studios.
This film festival is going to be amazing, I'm SO excited! Will be submitting for sure, probably in the second half of the year though
This is pretty cool. I'm gonna do a blueprint design for my studio set up as well. Lovely idea Howard.
That film festival is not an excuse to make that animation though, it's an opportunity.
This is so awesome, I was definitely looking for a chance to make an animation but I got too lazy and procrastinated :D Thank you so much Howard for giving us this opportunity!!!!! I can't wait.
awesome! looking forward to your entry. Say hi on the discord group!
I owe my life to this channel... Thanks for everything
very well thought out
Me: "tell me why should I listen to you without actually telling me why should I listen to you"
Howard: starts off by drawing perfect hands
Me: (as a clumsy artist who can't draw a thumb) "alright go on".
This is really cool. One thing I noticed though is I think it’d be good to have a sound booth for voice actors to come in and record.
ah yeah that would be cool! Great idea
Hmm might have to get started on that animation
Great video!
Good job mate.
I love your work
Very cool! Wish you big succes! :)
I would love to be a part of the plan... but I don’t know how to animate
It been a pretty long time iv started a shot animation. I'm so serious on it, I restarted it like 20 time because I get better every time and I just think my old animation is bad compared to my new one and the cycle goes on
Someone exactely!! We improve and we look at our old animation and think of restarting, iv started animating for less then a year too
Thanx dude!!
애니메이션 스튜디오 구조에 대해 실제로 이렇게 알게된건 처음이네요. 고마워요~ I could get more knowledge thx!
You re so professional
Can’t wait!!!!!
Im in! I have some work I’m doing for school and I’ll def in support of your idea. I would love to start an animation studio one day.
*Got my Animator Guild hoodie*
I'm never taking this thing off. It gives me powers and I feel special while animating.
yesss my boi that's the power of Animator guild
can't wait to get started on my entry! just out of curiosity, I've been planning on making a trailer for a comic I've been working on. I was wondering if that style of video is allowed or does it have to tell a cohesive story from beginning to end?
I will make that animation
count me in to!
I know that you didn’t talk too much about tech, but a FreeNAS with multiple terabyte drives shared amongst the artists on the network to streamline sharing of project files and importation for the next phase of operations, and a sound booth to record dialogue and foley effects would probably be the most important additions I see lacking.
Question: How does your set up account for concept art and character design? I didn't see a dedicated station for that. Will the director/storyboarder double as a viz-dev artist? It could be another bottle neck in the pipeline waiting for character designs and prop designs.
That’s a good question! To be honest I’m not that sure what is the best setup when it comes to pre-production so i left it out of most of it. My thoughts were this:
It depends on what you’re producing, but in a project that needs funding like a series or a feature film, in order to get financial backing for production you will need to already have fairly reliable character designs, scripts, environment designs in what they call a “pitch bible” and maybe even a loose storyboard or some scenes storyboarded. Only if you have a pitch bible and are funded successfully could you move onto the stage that you see. So a lot of work needs to be done upfront before you even get a chance to have a studio up and running, and on a small production the director typically takes most of that burden as it is his/her baby. Although if it were an independent production (perhaps kickstarted or something) you could use the ideation room as it has a big round table everyone could collaborate on, bring lap tops, sketchbooks etc. I don’t think a rigid layout would be as much of a benefit in pre-production but i don’t know for sure
I think the ideation room is a good idea. Maybe the animators can double as storyboard artists, like a Cartoon Network set up since their shows are storyboard based as opposed to script-based. I suppose the size of the Pre-production phase and team depends on the production.
I'm like you where I'm a one-man studio too, so it's cool to have these kinds of discussions with people in similar circumstances.
That sounds like a good idea
Wow!! I love this idea of virtual film festival! is this free to join? and free check ups from the professional?
yes it is totally free! It is our first year so we are experimenting
I wish u gave a riddle at the beginning of every episode like the blank room riddle with the constructing a plot twist vid😁
Ahhaa thanks I'm glad you liked that riddle. yeah i enjoyed doing that part, i might introduce it back for every episode, but only if I can use one which is relevant I guess
Ur amazing
You know what... I've never animated, but I might just start now with this!
Does 3D animation count as well for this film festival? Sounds exciting!
Can you please do a video on explaining mechanical terms, symbols and such. I always see symbols like (A1, B1, C1) in animated gengas and I really would love to know their meaning as well those red boarders and what they indicate. I also know that blue lines in characters and objects symbolize shaded areas while red lines symbolize highlighted areas. But some gengas include orange, yellow, green, brown and other colours as well. Are they subjective or are they simply used for differentiating. Or do they have an absolute set meaning behind them? If anyone knows of the meaning behind those things or some video explaining that it'd be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
is there a chance i can paricipate in the contest im 14 years old
there is no age restriction :) go over there and read about it
Howard Wimshurst iv red about it so all I have to do it finish a animation before next year and sent it?
Im learning adobe animate so I might end up trying to make my first real animation!
In the beginning of this video what program are you using? Thanks
You're a minding me of why I wanted to be an animator.
I really want to try for this contest, but I'm scared school might get in the way...
sounds like a poor reason to not try if you ask me ;)
Damn, I'm currently working on my thesis but one min sounds manageable.
Hmm. I've been thinking about making one but hadn't had much pushing me to do so.
just signed up
on the film thing would it be ok if i used an animation im already working on? i'm a little under halfway through my story board which is a little barebones if im honest :P also loved the video!
the idea is for this to be a helping push to get you to make a film from scratch so we would prefer you do that. having already started a film kinda puts you at an unfair advantage if you think about it. We were going to have a theme for this contest to make sure that everyone started at the same time, but we also didn't want to restrict people in the subject matter. So it would be great if you start a new idea
@@HowardWimshurst no problem, looking forward to making an attempt at the least :P
Is dance of the yokai (sorry if im spelling wrong) still in production? I really want to see the full version after seeing the short clip from one of your older videos.
yes regrettably it has been at about 99% completion for well over a year... Maybe two years now. They are just little nagging details that bug me, like some frames aren't coloured in properly, some of the animation is too rough and janky. people online scrutinize things like that so I'm waiting to release it when I have fixed them up. Every time I get a chance to work on it, a commission project comes along which I can't say no to, so it keeps getting put off.
@@HowardWimshurst I understand how much you have to work. I will wait until the full release. I really want to be amazed by your animation in it.
What about that video about the kakashi vs Obito fight you said you were going to do in the first naruto analysis video?
I made it. It was taken down from youtube. It is on my vimeo
Howard Wimshurst thank you
How did you learn this course, can you provide any source link?
www.animatorguild.com/courses.html
Hey Howard I know you busy with stuff but do you think you can make a video on how to keep your animations loose I animate and I'm having problems with my characters being to stiff like they can only do I specific thing unlike your animations which makes it feel like the character can do a whole lot of movements and it is alive if you can't then can you or anyone link a video to who to keep your animations loose and not stiff
Hey man, I like the idea... Perhaps you could help me to make the video? If you send me a message on discord, I can have a go at personally drawing over the images you are struggling with and maybe that will make for an interesting video.
No hablo Ingles muy bien, pero si llego a ser un muy buen animador me haría feliz trabajar junto a ti.
I'm in
Need to add a fussball table
How much would it Cost to Build an Animation Studio like that
What is the song for the overall video?
Does the animation have to be a story. Or literally anything like a music video animation cover. Copyright free of cause?
that information is on the webpage:
www.animatorguild.com/contest.html
If you use someone else's music, you need to have their permission or the rights to use it and they need to be credited
Howard Wimshurst oh ok thanks. Iam in 👍
Will this happen again cause I won't be able to do this cause of things... But I hope you'll do this like twice a year.
Shoot! I’m 6 months late to the party!
i have the normal 40 dollar wacom tablet but i dont have a pc to draw to its been stagnant in my shelf for a year
... pencil and paper?
Hello there, Is it possible if I do an animation?! If yes tell me, I'll work on shading and everything, I learned animation from you >W
I'll start from scratch, I'll do my best :D
Wow.. Im also one man studio. cheers.
You should get a job in a studio if you haven't had one already, just a short 3-6 month contract
So if I practice half a year of drawing like Jim jung gi then the rest is cake in theory
Practice effectively. Try your best to find links and structures to what you study. Don't just copy mindlessly.
Best of luck!
@@Laura-bq4uu thank you
Hey man do you know anywhere i can get help with my animation
yeah of course! Go onto my channel and watch through all of my videos / playlists
I'm writing webcomics, mostly on Tapas.io/pryzmia80, and i recently got motion artist by smith micro, the crazy trouble is that...i cannot work the crazy thing... i also have anime studio from 2012
Bro I really love your channel you are awesome 🔥
& you are handsome (:
Make an animation analysis video of gogeta Vs broly
What about sound design?
outsourced :)
I really want to be into animation, but i am not an artist same time i too bad at drawing... Like tooo bad...
But from my heart it saying i want to be an Animator...
Any tip to start with drawing.....?
If you want to be animator but don't want to draw, maybe you should consider doing 3d-animation :)
thebrokenbird, first of all, thank you, for your valuable answer,
myself I do think about the same before, but you know what, I really into those tradition animations where you hand draw the character frame by frame, which obviously i can't at least for now, or maybe current 2D animation...
finally, I decided to give a try on the latest software like after effect, to ease it up a bit in 2D animation...
don't know where will i end up in that department
What's the music at 1:30?
Lucky I want a animation studio, u know what frick that guy who thinks hes the animation god you are the animation god
I will do my best
I made a stick man animation and i post it on youtube but i think its not that good
@ismini thank for that but i dun want to sell it i just male it for fun
I want in @-@
is 12 frames a second an animation?
wow, interesting. But Still i did not get it completely.
Not second
Not first
Ok then! I'll try to do an animation (this is gonna be hard!)
I'm down, however my drawing is not good
First
Am I too late?
You forgot the bathroom?
there's a little room in the bottom right corner of the main room titled WC. I did remember!
@@HowardWimshurst ah ok I think I missed that if you mentioned it in the video lol
1 year Howard? Isn't that a bit too much for a 1 min+animation ??
well... Maybe yeah. But keep in mind that 1 minute is the minimum, there is no maximum.
If I set the deadline to be shorter, people complain, If I set it to be longer, people complain... I had to set it somewhere and I know a lot of people have school or jobs and things... I'm going to collect proper feedback at the end of it from everyone and we might adjust it next time we do one. thanks for the feedback
@@HowardWimshurst ah sweet, thx for clarification :) 'levitates away'
Also just tell me stuff on Discord, it's "Red_Knife#7534" :D

I mean it is, but he produces finished work and is well spoken.
