  • Sailing from Säfle to Arvika also named "Vikingaleden" or "The Viking Trail".
A trip from Säfle town in Värmland in the northern part of Vänern to Sweden's innermost navigable town Arvika.
On this stretch there has been found 2000 year old inhabited places and do not forget to visit the Viking town in Nysäter as you sail past.
"Vikingaleden" (St Olav Waterway) is a stretch through the beautiful Swedish landscape from the town of Säfle to the town of Arvika.
Arvika has Sweden's innermost harbor and you can reach the city by passing lakes, canalsystems and locks. The waterways and harbor have always been important for Arvika and the development of the area.
From lake Vänern the waterway follows Byälven and the lock in Säffle, the lakes Harefjorden, Björnöfjorden and Glafsfjorden - a distance of 43,2 NM.

Magic. We Aussies traversed Norway & Sweden by car including Ron and Arvika in August 1978.
We had amazing memories of our Saturday night in Arvika.
It was like a scene from "Happy Days" with many huge immaculate 1950's American cars gathered in the central square around a hot dog stand.
Both Norwegian and Swedish plates. The guys would cruise the main drag, while the girls would promenade in twos and threes with the guys swigging beers....
We were driving a 'large' British new car which was unsual to see in Scandinvia because of the high taxes... so lots of interest in each other's machines.

      Hi Stephen
There are still many us cars cruising around and it is absolutely interesting to look at so it is still like that.

@@SailinginScandinavia Fantastic, over 40 years later.
We were driving a new RR Silver Shadow II, which caused quite a stir.
The US cars were larger than the Roller....
The Happy Days guys in Arvika were amazed at the acceleration of the Shadow, doing a drag with them in the main street.
I believe the tax was 150% on such cars in Sweden so it was very rare to see a new one.
We saw 1 other in Stockholm, about a 1968 Shadow 1.
As an Aussie we could bring an imported car home to Australia after 15 months and save 92% import duty and sale tax.
So it was like an investment holiday. 6000 Aussies did this in 1978 which was the last year of the tax concession scheme.
Benzs, Porches, Volvos, Ferrazzers, many bought by the parents to get a cheap car and the kids have the holiday of a lifetime.
