The sword is blunt for the first half foot. It's actually historically accurate for larger swords.

disregarding that most swords aren't sharp on the ricasso which is clearly what's being grabbed here, you can grab swords by the blade.
blades cut you by sliding along your skin so as long as your grip is firm enough and you do not allow your hand to slide you physically cannot get cut by it.
and of course people used this fact to kill one another there's the classic Mordhau, where you would hold your sword entirely by the blade and use the cross guard of your sword as a hammer/pick in order to kill an armored opponent. in fact, some swords had specialized cross guards for exactly this purpose to make them more effective in mordhau then other swords
now often you would want some kind of protection on your hand while you do this, but it's not necessary if you just don't mess up.
