Special thanks to my camera men! - Jak na to + styl
Thanks for the tip about the mic, my car didn't come with one but I salvaged one from the junkyard and installed and it worked great
This may be the absolute best car stereo installation video i've ever seen! Thank you so much for taking the time to film every step and describe in detail what you're doing. I wish all tutorial videos had this level of detail.
I just put a radio in my new Prius, and this video was a lifesaver for every step. Thank you so much!
This is a brilliant vid, well done, you worked hard on this, very much appreciated.
This is one of the most helpful CZcams videos I have ever come across. After watching this video I was able to install a double din Pioneer head unit into my 06 Prius with factory "premium" JBL audio fairly effortlessly. Thanks so much for your videos! The only changes that I did was mount a USB/3.5mm audio jack inputs directly into the center plastic compartment below the head unit. I also decided not to tap into the existing factory mic just yet and used the Pioneer mic, but left enough cabling tucked under the paneling for tapping into the factory mic in the future. The sound is significantly better now and I finally have navigation in the Prius! Thanks again!
I want to thank you for making this video, it was incredibly detailed and taught me a lot about my car. However I would recommend for anyone that cares at all about audio quality and has the JBL amp to avoid the Metra TYTO-01 digital audio interface recommended in this video and get the Metra 70-8117 factory amplifier bypass harness. The bypass harness allows you to plug your speakers directly into to your new stereos amplifier without a redundant digital conversion. You do have to take out your front seats and pull back the front carpet to feed the bypass harness under the passenger seat carpet to behind the dash. I first used the TYTO-01 as recommend in this video and the audio quality was terrible. Turning up any music with bass would make the woofers cut out, and there was a constant hissing noise when nothing was playing. The quality with the bypass harness is night and day.
thanks for this!
Excellent video! I was about to give up but then I watched your video several times and was able to install a single din atoto with backup camera and steering wheel controls. You’re a lifesaver.
Thanks for the tutorial.... I am not nearly as interested in upgrading now lol
Grom Audio has a unit that piggybacks on the existing hardware giving both Apple CarPlay or Android Auto using the Prius OEM Display. This unit allows CZcams and Netflix on Prius OEM display. This unit has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. Typically, the HDMI output allows for an external monitor while HDMI input allows adding Chromcast or mouse to the unit. There are separate RCA connections for rear camera or front cam. The unit has 2 USB ports and port for a microSD Card. Installation takes a couple hours. There is no splicing of wires. The kit comes with custom cables that interface with the pre-existing Prius cables. This allows for a factory look with all the functionality of the Prius buttons in place. I found this unit from Prius Chat forum.
Great to see you back
That 68 ohm resistor install is EVERYTHING. there's so many prius owners who have delt with that issue. Thank You 😊
Just want to send a belated thank you for this video. Thanks to you, I upgraded my own radio in my 2009 prius. (Did the pioneer AVH-W4500NEX). Cruising in style now! ;)
Jeez Louise - this is an impressive video but has made me appreciate just how much effort is involved in doing this :/
Wow that was alot of work! Do you own the car?
GREAT VIDEO! I really miss my Prius. I'm looking for another one to purchase now.
Great to see you. You are INCREDIBLE !!!
I'm very impressed in your video that you do an excellent job explaining everything! A lot of other content similar to yours skips important parts you've seen to cover just about everything!
give this man a medal,he's a genius
i was so excited to do this to my prius until i saw how hard it was. props to you
That second screen looks great! Nice job on the video!
What a great way to improve a Prius!
I also know a great way to improve your FACE
OOOOOOOOOO GET PIED!!!
MMAPGaming lol! 😂
I love your enthusiasm. Thanks for the video. This is immensely helpful.
How to replace your replace your Prius information system in 200 easy steps.
You’re fantastically gifted sir. Great work.
Amazing video mate. What a job well done.
Fantastic video and extremely helpful. Also one hundred cool points because you sound like Billy West.
Great video man.🤙🏻

You're a lifesaver!! I'm gonna try this on my 2008 Prius and leave feedback.
Wow that was a lot of work. Impressive 👏
that was amazing, thank you so much for making this video, all the time and care you took making it. This will be an essential guide for when im doing it as well. im doing this in japan, on the same car right now, im installing a 8core android box, with a 4 antenna high speed tuner, hoping, to watch tv while driving.. heh
Hi DocsWorld, How did the installation go? I want to do the same but confused with which android stereo to buy for my Prius 2008. Is it possible to share your stereo make/model or link? Basically I am confused with size i.e. dimensions and harness. Thanks in advance.
@@FarazKeVlog sure i can when i get a chance i believe it was called "pie"
i will have to double check this later. the hardest part i will be honest, was..
when you start clipping cables.. things just stop working.
in japan we have this etc card reader, that stopped, and the dash moniter stopped as well. I found via this video some info about how to make a jumper with a diode. i finally figured it out, and the moniter came back. was really hard.. but.. i finally got it done.. but remember i have 2003 prius so these wiring harnesses, and cable positions are most likely very different.
@@MemeKing44 thanks buddy. Good to know about your experience as it may come in handy. 👍
Great vid pi!
You’re back!
Wow I wish I could have you install this in my Prius 😍😂
A fellow Cowmoonity member! Love the Blimey Cow t-shirt!
Great job I feel like you really have to know a lot to do this I appreciate your video tho you are super smart ☺😊👍✨👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely stunning. I think the best video in this subject. Thank you
Drinking game, every time he says there we go or here we go take a drink.
thank you for this nice tutorial :D
very very good installation
Great work bro :))
You are awesome. Im gonna attempt to do this.
Glad to see that Toyota made it easier to do an aftermarket stereo swap-out. When I was your age, we used to have to start from the frame and work up. In a blizzard. In the dark.
Great job, great video.
Very well done my friend
Happy Halloween pi!
Fantastic video! So far this is the most detailed one that I can find by FAR! This is gonna help me replace my stock Prius radio with a similar Pioneer. Thanks! A question: can you give me more detail on how you did the parking brake bypass? I'm guessing that was a purchase and not included with any of the products you bought?
Lovely vid m8 think I'll do this to my Prius
Awesome job.
Awesome video 👌👏
Does the multifunction display “audio section” still work with the new radio or does that become obsolete?
This really nice job
I remember when pi was first driving around the time he revealed his name... good times
Great video, thanks
Super video I'm not one to actually reach out and say so but I enjoyed the video I'm going to be making a video soon on my $400 Prius a stereo upgrade is definitely going to be a part of it!
Do it
Great video
I wish I could just hire you to do mine. This was a lot of work I can imagine, but seeing that you know how to retain steering wheel controls, and know about the climate control fix,I feel like I would only trust you and not the other guys from audio shops.
Back when I was your age, I used to rip out the entire front dashboard to install 2DIN car audio... did fiberglass molds to make my own bezel to fit double DIN to 1.5DIN and did crap load of car audio install. These days... I just install a nice iPhone mount. Since most newer cars have AUX input... I just plug my phone into the Factory HeadUnit.
I followed these instructions and am getting an “amp error” message. Any idea how to resolve?
Thanks for the video, it was helpful. I just changed the Prius Stereo on my car. . The only thing that, need is the right resistor to make the AC work. By any chance do you know what 68 OHM resistor I need to put into pins 9 and 10?
Great video. I just got a Prius and was wondering how to completely tear it apart. Difference between you and me though, is that I'll never get it back together. . . according to my wife.
Appreciate all of your work with this video. Saved me a few hours of work. Got the new stereo in, only problem I have is the volume resets after the vehicle is stopped and then started. Doesn't seem to occur only if the ignition is in aux though. Any clue? Maybe a "feature" of the new head unit. Either way, I can't figure out how to fix that. Head unit is a Dual from Wal-Mart...
what happens to the stock navigation? Also what happens when you press the audio button on the stock screen?
Just out of curiosity.
Nice job man, but after got to the carpet I thought. "I'll buy a new Prius".
This must have taken DAYS to research, and DAYS more to actually implement, and several more days to edit after recording. Kudos!
There's literally a website you can use to give you information about every model car in existence advising what and how to install aftermarket systems.
@@davethefish7653 That's great but it still takes days to research and implement and film and edit this video.
@@EarlCo So... you're saying it takes a long time to make videos? Because it took me an entire 10 minutes to find clear and concise information about an entire installation. Yes. It takes a long time to make videos.
@@davethefish7653 I can literally see it go from day to night to day again in the video so it took at least 2 days to actually install this thing while making a video, and yes, we are in agreement that making videos takes time. So if your only point is that it does NOT take days to RESEARCH, then great, you win. Want a cookie? I'm just recognizing and appreciating the time it took. If you can do it quicker and cover the same instructions in a shorter video, go for it! Maybe monetize your video too.
@@EarlCo I'm happy you are able to recognize the difference between daytime and nighttime because I sure didn't! That's insane! I commend you. Maybe make a video on how you were capable of doing that and get paid for it. That's even harder than looking at a digital schematic with every part needed with links to buy them!
Dang good video... thanks sooooo much
Very nice tutorial! By the way, do the steering wheel control backlights work? I heard that they might not work once the original HU is removed.
Yep! They still work. Though they have been really dim on my steering wheel since I got the car.
Heck yeah on the blimey cow t-shirt!
Hi can you tell me more about how to connect the wires? Currently doing this in my 08 Prius
i was thinking about putting one of these with android auto in my prius but the map placement is pretty bad if i have to keep looking in the right side of the dash for the map, i think i'll just keep putting my phone on the vent mount for now until i see something worth the trouble of installing.
nice job
Will this work on a 2007 that does not have the phone option on the steering wheel?
15:10 I appreciate the Linus Tech Tip's WAN Show Podcast!
Will this work for Gen 3 as well? Looking at buying a 2010
My compliments for the great job you done! The video is amazing, thank you very much for this. I need your help for another hybrid car. Could you please show me how or which best media player I can install in to my Lexus RX450h from 2009 ( has the dashboard of the 2010 model, the one where you cannot install any 2DIN stereo ). The car, has AUX audio IN, also Bluetooth but ONLY for CALLS and is not sharing media sound to listen the music from my phone. I would like to install some SSD hard drive with music, together with this multimedia player which you will choose. May I see the commands or Desktop icons of this multimedia player on the factory display of the car? Thank you!
Thanks for you kind words.
As for your question, I'm a little confused. Are you wanted a demonstration of the functionality of my the head-unit I installed? I can record a short video and send it to you through Google Drive if you like. Or are you wondering if I can get the screen of my new Pioneer head unit to show up on the original screen that came on the Prius? That's not possible as they are separate system. Though I don't mind at all looking at 2 screens.
My Pioneer head unit does have AUX, Bluetooth media streaming, and I can connect a flash drive and play music from that, but it is Double-Din stereo. So if your Lexus doesn't have space for that, I don't see how my head unit would provide features you want.
I have a Japanese prius ...so the same tutorial will work for it too ?
Just bought my first Prius, a 2009, and I immediately HATE the radio. I'll be making a change similar to this one asap and use your video as guidance!! One thing I hoped you could answer... does the reverse camera already in the car still work in the top screen, along with all of the battery charging display, etc?
Great work! Awesome result. After watching this video I fully appreciate how much knowledge and work is required to do this. I decided to just keep my original radio. I did plug in a mp3 player in the back of it with a usb and an aux input. So at least I can now listen to spotify from my phone. Which was my main concern.
How did you plug in an mp3 player to the back of your original radio? That is all I really need as well.
What if you get a digital double din do you still need the analog to digital adapter??, I have the jbl audio system.
Great video, going to try this on my Prius just waiting for parts to arrive from the states, quick question though if the stereo has the ability to program the steering wheel controls do you need the axxess swc module
Hello Stuart, did you find an answer ?
@@frmf you don't need the axxess swc module, if your stereo comes with the ability to program the steering wheel controls it should have the same two wires from the axxess swc module that was used in the video..........I only had a cheapish xtrons unit off ebay and it worked a treat.
What happens when you press the audio button on the Mfd now?
I installed after market head unit but the energy screen and AC controls not working... I connected the resistor on pins 9 and 10 still not working... Any solution? Thanks
Holy crap thats a ton of work !
It was SO worth it though! I love my Prius now.
What is the little black box for AXXSS or something like that... Ist necessary if I want to install aftermarket head unit in my 08 Prius?
wonderful!
Great video !! The harness to bypass the amp where can u buy it also the harness for the steering wheel controls ???
I've got the steering wheel control interface linked in the description. As for the bypassing the amp, when I did my research it sounded like you had to get a separate analogue amp to bypass the JBL amp. But I wasn't interested in putting that much effort.
Though if you were talking about the parking break bypass which I used in the video, just search "Pioneer parking break bypass" on eBay or Amazon. Though you only need it for my head unit similar to mine, the 4100NEX, (if you have a newer model there's a secret setting you can search for to bypass it.)
Why did you stop uploading on your Cubing channel? It would be awesome to see MMAP review a Valk 3
Since they don't make this head unit anymore, can anyone recommend another one with similar wiring that I can install using this video?
Thanks.
Hello dear
What is the appropriate Can Bus for the Toyota Prius 2005 ?
Can someone plz help me in prius 2008 model i dont see cigarette lighter but i have power outlet in main armrest but its not working when i inserted the phone charger what is that? Its written on that 120 v
Can someone make a video on how to add the 30 or 60-ohm resistor to the connection to the mfd?
If you got the JBL audio, do you need to replace the speaker? I read somewhere that they use a different wattage. So they needed to be replaced if you replace the head unit.
This is way more difficult than it was in my 04 Chevy Silverado I never got to installing a dash kit so it’s just sitting there but I’m just thankful I don’t have to do all of this to have a different radio
How difficult will it be to upgrade a hatchback to a touring?
Did you keep the back up camera feature with that stereo?
So, what happened to your main channel?
Hi there! I'm sure you (well okay probably) sold the car by now, but in my case (2007 P2 FL, 234k km) with a JBL what android audio would you recommend? It's dont have to be pioneer or any "brand" name. I would go with chinese products too.
Thanks! :)
I can't get the steering wheel controls to work or figure out where the rear speakers connect.
How was the battery after
You mean the 12V auxillery battery? Seems to be fine since I installed it. Looks like the stereo uses very little of it when the car us off.
Hi there could you send me a link where I could purchase the 68ohm resistor for my aftermarket android stereo please
Hi could you replace the MFD with a double din CarPlay module? Is it possible? Would the frame of the MFD fit the display of the CarPlay accessory? I would like to do that Instead because my MFD stopped working and my eyes naturally gravitate to it when I’m looking at the directions. I would like to keep aesthetic the same, just with the MFD replaced with CarPlay. I was wondering if that was possible. Please Reply, thank you .
thank you good video, have you wired the dash cam yet?
Yep, I've got it installed. Though there's a one or two videos I want to finish before posting that one.
I can't download the app for Axxess. It's not updated for the current version of Android. How can I get steering wheel controls without it? Also I can't figure out where the rear speakers connect. The ones marked for this on the new stereo don't seem up go anywhere.
