    Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

      Thanks! Yes, that wrist snap at the end is critical for the best 'roll' action. You got this! :))

    I buy line 1 weight heavier than the rod I am fishing. 6 weight line on a 5 weight rod. The river I fish is in heavy brush and requires basically all roll casts and the heavier line really seems to help load the rod more and shoot more line.

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  Před 2 lety +3

      Great tip - I generally do the same and level up a size.

    Great video, I feel like the most important thing is that you are setting your line on the water to create that water tension which is what loads the rod and makes the cast work. As well as the amount of time you wait with your line on the water which is based on the weight and or air resistance of your flies. General rule with lighter flies is to really make sure you anchor a lot of line on the water and wait just a second before you initiate the forward cast. With heavier flies you can get away with a little less anchor but you will need to initiate the forward cast a little quicker because they will sink too deep to easily come out of the water and present. If you’re getting a lot of pile up on the presentation you aren’t anchoring enough line and if the fly wont come out of the water you’re waiting too long. Play with a lot of different rigs and you’ll see what I’m talking about.. Watch some good Spey casting videos and just practice and you’ll learn how to roll cast like a champ.

    Ok dumb question. I am just getting set up to fly fish and haven’t been anywhere except back yard practicing casting. In your video here, it’s a one time cast right? Or wrong?

    Hmmm i fly fished years ago and enjoyed then screwed my shoulder so i started using a bfs system to fly fish as false casting became nearly impossible... ive never seen this cast before and it could open up a lot of fly only venues for me that only allow fly fishing tackle
