I did a storyboard - 23 images, 6 backgrounds and 2-3 characters under 7 days. It was to apply for university. I wish I had known about the deadline further back than a week.

What kind of school makes you do that maybe this is just my opinion but I feel like if you're going to do that much work for school you might as well apply for the jobs

Yes characters are hard, and because they are one of the jobs almost everyone wants to, the market becomes saturated. I still remember how almost everyone in art school would fill up their portfolios with characters.
Totally - it's popular indeed and rightly so! Always tough to stand out in a crowded field but it's a fun challenge too.
The market is a fluid thing. It becomes saturated with offers - new opportunities open up. Keep evolving, make better art - the market will need you.
@@MelvilleG Always saw it from veryone wanting the same job, not how saturated it was from offers. I will practice that mind shift of seeing it as saturated with "offers" instead of competition.

Hey Chitraksh! Nice to hear from you. Awesome, I hope you'll participate.
Incredible. How often do you reference poses? Or are they mostly from your visual library? I struggle trying to visualize a dynamic pose without a good reference.
I usually need to browse for a pose that has the attitude that I want and a gesture I want to capture. Incredible how nuanced those things can be - the smallest change in angle of the hips or height of the shoulders can change everything so I usually need help getting that initial inspiration and making sure the final pose will have the attitude that I want the character to have. From there, I can rely on some pretty solid anatomy knowledge to help to build things around that frame work and I just fine tune and fine tune until it feels just right. I spend about half of the total design time on the pose alone!

Love the complete Outfit! Not really sure why you made the weapon pop with that cyan color. Is there a reason for it?

Thanks! I really appreciate that. Ah - great catch on the accent color. I'm planning on using that blue and yellow as a way to tie the whole squad together with some consistent color accents. The next character will have blue skin :)

Hey Hardy, may I follow it along but with environments? I've been busy as hell with a university I just want to run away from and I just finished a piece from my personal IP so don't wanna oversaturate myself doing another right away , really need to relax and try something different. Any tips on "archetypes" for places aside from what you said already?
You definitely can but if you're not into characters at the moment, you might consider waiting until a future challenge. We'll certainly have an environment-based challenge at some point (maybe up next?) and I'd love to continue the idea of archetypes. Sure, there are many that I can think of and it usually just boils down to standard settings you see in a movie like a lab, a library, a dungeon, a safe home etc. - all of these have common qualities and feelings that apply to any genre. That bar example is my favorite though :)
When you design characters, do you also include the weapons or gadgets they use?
Sometimes but not always. I think including those things only makes the character more valuable as a portfolio item, but of course it takes more work. Just about every character in this squad will have a big, crazy gun, so there will be some prop design for the squad I'm working on. Not at all a requirement though.

Is this for people with painting experience, I watched your class back when I was in school I loved it it was simple and got me into painting but I could never put more effort into it because I was pursuing 3D in school. But lately I have been wanting to put 3D down because it is self is very hard to get into as well and wanted to get back into painting and making characters in Photoshop. It's a hell of a lot easier than 3D or I should say it's easier and a hell of a lot faster LOL
All levels of experience are welcome so definitely don't disqualify yourself if you have been away from digital painting for a while. I agree, it tends to just feel easier and more expressive than 3D but I am hugely biased :)

I'm not sure - is Artstation doing something just like this? Whoops, I should have checked first :) Oh well, our challenge will be more fun. Haha
what brushes do u use? are they available on clipstudio??
These are photoshop brushes so I'm not sure if they port over to CSP. Can it use abr files? The brushes are mostly standard round brushes but I use a drybrush-like smudge tool and a diamond shaped brush with some paper texture for the more brushy parts.

I know it’s not the focus of the video but it’s the main thing keeping me from picking up my pen again is there any point to focus on concept art now with that ai business going on?
Yeah, I totally get that and you are definitely not alone. I think AI is going to affect everyone in the coming years in one way or another so I have arrived at the comfortable conclusion that I'm going to keep making art because I'm an artist. Not at all a satisfactory answer but that's where I am currently and we'll all just have to wait and see and navigate this as well as we can.

Bummer, I'm sorry to hear that. Character art is especially competitive and there can be lots and lots of rejection before good things start happening. I'm sorry that breakthrough hasn't yet happened and I hope it's right around the corner for you!
