Elliot is so much more at ease as it goes! Very nice to see you grow and this is great information.
Great video and information! Thank you!
Ryan cut the mane! We all miss Randy, but Elliot will settle in and before we know it, he'll be impressing everyone just like Randy did. Good luck!
Very helpful video I have seen tons of the brs vids love them :). Learned alot and enjoy every bit of it
Wish I would have had this years ago. But thanks for making this clear and digestible for a QT layman like myself.
Just received a beautiful trio of Anthias from Elliot! Glad to have him QT for now, but you guys make this look pretty easy for me in the future. Thanks for the info!!
I'm a newbie to the hobby, which seems so much more expensive here in the UK, for obvious reasons I s'pose, but I wish to begin the hobby and hope never to give it up, despite climbing electric prices. I will begin with a quarantine tank, as the parts are relatively cheap to acquire, but needs to be there along with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur. Your films are so informative, and I would never have thought about this pastime were it not for your instruction and the like of New York Steelo - all those years ago. Thank you all! VBW x
Man this is much more helpful than just saying do this or that.
More fish tank information needs to be distributed this way
Great video
maybe an idea , name alternate products. prazi and copper power are not available everywhere ,for instance in europe can bea difficult, or name the active component so it can be matched with a simular products for the method. nice work , Good series to help people do this better and lower the failure rate of adding fish to their tank.
Fish Tank Hobbyist here 😮! Just did this…..FYI… it works! Holler at me y’all!
Thank for the informative video! I am looking into starting a new tank and want to keep it clean as much as I can, what should I do? How do I cycle a tank without fish and how do I implement good behavior at maintaining disease at a low while starting a tank ?
Elliot reminds me a LOT of Joseph Gordon-Levitt!
Nice job.
You guys make an awesome tandem Fellas
Great videos; very helpful! What would be an alternative for the Furan-2 as this product seems to be currently banned in Canada?
Ryan love the hair man!!! Great video
Ryan please mention feeding while in QT also!
Furan-2 seems to be discontinued, is there an alternative treatment?
Not this guy, but I need to know a pretty good deal about antibiotics. The active ingredient in Furan-2 is nitrofurazone, it is a broad spectrum antibiotic (activity against gram + & -, anaerobic and aerobic bacteria) and there seems to be another product on the market by AP called fin and body cure with doxycycline hyclate, which is also broad spectrum. The minimum inhibitory concentration for doxycycline is really low, it’s quite strong and kills well. And I also don’t know very many bacteria that pack a doxy resistance. I think your next safest bet would be doxy.
Focus from seacham
Nice, thank you.
I was most looking forward to seeing actual treatment protocols.
Any chance BRS might put a pdf version or article on the website for reference?
Good idea!
Agreed
I’ll third this!!
I’m glad I want the only one who found this kinda hard to follow
Finally a qt I think i can handle doing myself!!
Holy cow! Samson cut his hair! I mean Ryan did.
love the haircut sir
Furan-2 was discontinued as a heads up to anyone looking for it
Furan 2 appears to be a discontinued product. Can you recommend an alternative?
wait how do you perform the rinse? also do you acclimate to display tank and how. would love to see this in a actual doin it style vid.
@brs There is so much conflicting information out there about copper and what it leaches into can you please take a moment and touch on that. For example, I've had people say the tank I just bought that had copper ran in it before is now ruined for anything but fish only as the copper will have leaches into the overflow piping and even the silicone seams and then leach back into the water. Then other people say that's not true and to just rinse and clean it good and it'll be fine.
I can't find anywhere that firmly states anything on it. Just people arguing back and forth about it.
Thanks.
It’s still odd to watch BRS videos without Randy.
Ryan, go get Randy back!!
Should I make a fresh mix of water or I can use water from my display
Can you explain why add the copper power to the mixing bin rather than to the tank directly?
What size tank do you recommend one four inch tang?
Hi BRS, I live in south east asia and temps are usually at around 30c so there is definitely no need for a heater. However if I were to set up a QT do I need to get a chiller for it?
is it safe to reuse the water tank that you pre mixed copper power in ? Or do i need to buy a seperate one that i would not use for regular fresh rodi water and saltwater mixing
Being in the uk I’ve barely got hold of copper power but now have 2 bottles to last me a while plus api general cure 2 packs and also seachem focus for the combining of the medication for internal parasite worms, but can’t find the api furan-2 am I better off using general cure instead ? Or where can I source it from the uk ?
Can you please explain me the step with Furan-2?When I will dose it?
While I have my copper at 1ppm I will add Furan-2?
Where do you get the Furan 2/fluconazole?
Doesn’t look like BRS carries Furan-2 or a Nitrofurazone alternative. Checked both my LFS and the typical box box stores and nothing there either. Any suggestions on where to source it?
So do you use the prazipro also ? I see it in the video but it is not talked about , or did I miss that part ?
What’s the dosing for Furan-2 for 10g? I got the bulk powder medication but no dosing instructions.
Is there another option to the Nitrofurazone we can’t get that for some strange reason in the UK?
Fish medication in Canada is banned off local fish store shelves. I use a 5 gallon bucket. It’s less stress to the fish and less cost with regard to medications and waterchanges.
Great video! A tip is that you can buy a 20gallon tank and just put a mark for 10 gallons in the side. This will allow you to save water when you are only doing one or two fish. Btw I dont think Furan 2 (dont think the chemical is allowed) is not available in Europe do you have any recommendations for alternatives?
I don’t think Furan 2 is available in US either. I think it’s discontinued. What’s an alternative?
look for Nitrofurazone
@bulkreefsupply furan 2 is not readily available anymore...you got something else we can use?
Furan 2 is discontinued what would you use?
Can you use BiFuran instead of Furan-2 which I can't find
If I build a quarantine fish tank, what should I do with the tank after each quarantine?
Since there is mature filter material in the fish tank, can I just change 100% of the water to remove the residual drugs in the water? Thank you
Do we still need to do the full water changes if we have a biological filter? What about using Metroplex? I saw some sand in a tank with a wrasse. What kind of sand is safe to use?
Great vid! Love the shorter hair Ryan. Less Wayne's World...excellent!
Party on!
thank you so much for all this great info. I have a question that I cant find a professional opinion on - how do we QT Morays? Ich doesnt apparently affect them but they might still be carriers. what would you recommend?
Eels do not handle copper well at all, so this is not a good method for quarantining eels. Instead, tank transfer method is a better option. This post has more information on that procedure if you're not familiar.
www.reef2reef.com/threads/tank-transfer-method.192655/
Thanks!
How long does it take bacteria to grow on the bio-balls?
can you treat all of these potential diseases ahead of time without obvious signs on the scales or would that be toxic (common fishies)?
Just talked to API. Furan-2 is not discontinued it’s just out of stock because they are having issues getting ingredients. Just an fyi
I see you have a flame angel in this video a lot of people online saying they can’t handle a copper treatment to eradicate ich/ velvet any tips ?
great video im a bit puzzle my clown fish got sick but she fine now not any physical spot like brook or velvet or ick she keep rubbing her face on the deco strange could be there parasite that we dont know I took her out to the qt after a month using simple med in the qt I gave her a freshwater bath did not go away i try everything because she was goig to the surface to breath I taught she gone but she survive for 3 month in the qt now she in the dt what parasite got her I dont understand there was no white spot or mucus during that sick period she ate like 1 piece of pallets a day sometime 2 could be we miss other parasite that might be out there
I actually like to boil everything that isn’t appliances, like wash the pvc hides, the hose and the air stone and the tank with boiling water, so I prefer using plastic tanks for QT sake
I always do TTM.
Tank transfer method so much easier and better than this process but great video.
What is tank transfer method? This qt is ridiculous. Would cost a fortune! Damn hanna checker along is 70 bucks. I dont own a brute not do I have IO salt! I also believe you will loose quite a few fish from this. First thing after arriving and being stressed from shipping to be put through a fresh water bath, not to mention catching them through all the water changes. Just to much!
Newbie here.... I know copper absorbs into things so do you need a separate mixing brute trash can from your normal mixing trash can? Or will the copper not leech into the trash can and can I use that same can for regular water changes in my DT?
Best practice is to keep a separate set of tools for your QT setup. I would suggest a separate Brute can for your QT setup, especially if you're going to be using non-reef-safe medication like copper.
Is is necessary or just recommended to QT every fish that I buy?
This seems more like the 95/70 approach lol!
What size QT for Regal Angelfish and Copperband Butterflyfish? They will not be in QT at the same time. Those are the largest fish I would be quarantining.
you guys said add Copper the your tub of water . doesn't it doesn't it dissipate. Does the copper remain at that level indefinitely?
I am trying this method now but I am having a hard time. I have 5 fish in a 40Gal Breeder (3" longnose butterfly which is not doing well today-swimming with his nose down, 4" yellow tang & sailfin tang, a 4" bluejaw trigger & a 5" niger trigger). I have a sponge filter from my main sump but ammonia keeps rising forcing a daily 50-100% water change).
I ran into a very similar issue.
Why do you guys have praziPro on the table and not talk about it once in the video??
Can I add praziPro in my qt tank with copper power and nitrofurazone?
GOOD VIDEO :)
ALTHOUGH IT WILL BE MORE EFFICIENT IF EVERY SITUATION WILL BE SHOWN IN A REAL TREATMENT SITUATION .
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
There is NO furan-2 anywhere. What do I get????
Can I use Furin 2 with Cupramine? I lost 90% of my fish and my LFS recommended using Cupramine. I will QT every fish now. I was that guy that thought “I trust my LFS that won’t happen to me”…..20 years of success in freshwater husbandry and my first year of saltwater I learned how bad things can turn QUICKLY. One wild caught Mandarin took out 10 fish in 3 days.
These instructions will apply to chelated copper (e.g. Copper Power). We usually opt to use Copper Power as it's more forgiving and easy to dose/keep at therapeutic levels.
How’re you managing ammonia given the tank in video is not cycled and you’re going 3-4 days between water changes?
Given that the fish is small and the water volume is relatively large, ammonia shouldn't be a major issue if you're doing your water changes. Of course, if you do notice it becoming a problem, you can always step in and do additional water changes, if needed.
this was a short series. figured it would of been more informative. example. if your can't use copper or don't want to use copper what are the alternative to copper?
The series isn't over. This is a 15 part series with the next episode being released this Friday 🙂
@@BRStv sweet i was wondering. i felt like so many questions unanswered.
If you buy fish and you don’t know if or how they were quarantined, is it still safe to follow this protocol? If it was quarantined with meds, should you still do this anyway?
If you are trusting someone to QT with meds for you and you're paying for that service, you should probably skip this process. If you don't trust them but are paying them to QT for you, then it's probably time to find a different source for fish! 🙂
That said, you can still put the fish through this process even if they've already been partially quarantined at your LFS.
In reference to the freshwater bath, when you say freshwater bath followed by 50% freshwater & 50% "tank water" (saltwater), is the "tank water" just plain saltwater with no copper in it yet?
Yeah are we talking just RODI water dip or saltwater dip or what?
And how much did you feed? Did you feed daily? There was nothing about feeding the fish during QT
I can’t seem to find an answer for this question. Is 1.5 ppm of copper power considered therapeutic? At all? Will it do anything beneficial or is it strictly 2.0-2.5 ppm?
Did you watch the video? They literally say “we want to go above therapeutic, therapeutic is 1.5 and some people go to 2 but we want to go to 2.5” but only with that copper. Remember that!!
Furan 2 is discontinued. Anything else?
Can you run a uv sterilizer on a qt tank?!
You shouldn’t with medication.
What about hydrogen peroxide to treat flukes (and velvet)?
They haven’t got to treating flukes yet. They said that would be last.
My Rusty Angel, Melanorus Wrasse, and Cleaner Wrasse all died around 0.5. My other fish (non Angels and wrasses) all did fine. I think 2.0 is too high. I took 1 week to get it to that level as I wanted to go slow. Fish were eating fine and showed no symptoms of any disease.
Hell no I aint doing this! I am getting two flasher wrasse, a coris wrasse and a cherub angel! Not worth the risk! The other fish beside those are tank raised so should be safer!
So every 3 days I do a 100% water change ?
Short hair for summer
To avoid the many water changes, you can throw a sump sock or something that was in your main tank that has bio bacteria on it...this will keep ammonia away. Just never use that stuff in the main tank again.
Just curious - by giving a “thumbs up” from BRS, does that mean they are endorsing this? This protocol calls for 4 water changes…. Is the sole reason for this ammonia, etc, or is there a specifically therapeutic reason for this that allows for the 14 day quarantine?
@@treywilliams9975 My comment refers to adding the bacteria via media in the QT. I avoid the water changes by doing this.
@@ROTTERtubewhat about a seasoned bio brick?
I wouldn't put a filter sock. They get washed in bleach every 3 days and have no biological benefit, although they do a mechanical service. Best is have some sponge filter in your sump and then designate one your forever QT one that never leaves your QT tank.
how about quarantining conches?
Seems odd to discuss Furan 2/Nitrofurazone but not sell it. That said, I'm not seeing it on Amazon either so maybe a reason it can't be sold.
It's not something that we do too often, but it's a big part of Elliot's process 🙂
@@BRStv what do WE buy? Is this all useless cause we can’t get it?
Amazon
With they'd give alternative treatments for people not living in USA.
Man oh man, way easier to just buy the fish from Elliot!!!
Cry
Do you have the site for Elliotts fish?
First like!!!!
Are we Acclimating fish off QT water, and what are you guys doing for top off?
You'll need some way of maintaining salinity levels, so you can certainly add an auto top off system to make your life easier, or just top off frequently by hand. Just remember that evaporation will increase the medication's concentration in the water (because the medication doesn't evaporate).
Why wouldn't you take 10 gallons of water from your tank for the quarantine tank? Like a mini water change for your system and it would guarantee that the parameters in the quarantine tank were the same. Having said that, this is great. I've always struggled to maintain the stability of the quarantine tank.
Because you want to use different salt for the copper than what is in you're display tank.......
10:13 Sadly this looks like a USA only product, I cannot find this in Europe anyway. Please add some alternatives that are globally sourceable so this can be done anywhere. I understand BRS is a american reef supply chain but as mentioned often in the videos its about reefkeeping not promoting products I guess I'm not the only one watching from outside the US
I can’t even find the furan-2 in Ohio in the US. That’s checking pet stores and online/Amazon.
@@brittanybulloch3839 Apparently the chemical Nitrofurazone is now strictly regulated and Furan-2 has been discontinued.. Nitrofurazone is carcinogenic so probably the reason it's banned for human use. I've stumbled upon a good website, when searching for Copper power, with almost identical steps as shown in these videos with great alternatives for antibiotics and other meds including copper and the ratios for that product. One alternative for Furan-2 I found was "Nitrofuracin Green" also not available in the EU unfortunately. Apparently this is Furan-2 on steroids. I would love to share the website but I think this is inappropriate
Just diy it.. use a bucket or a plastic box! Staying there fir observation be cheaper.. just like that one girl!
Ryan said 4 three-day cycles, but then talks about "day 15." Do we actually do this 5 times?
I don't think this is for everyone. I followed this process perfectly with a clown, royal Gramma and a blenny. All 3 died. Yes, I tested daily with a Hannah checker. Highest ammonia reached 0.25 They were all happy and swimming around at the lfs. 1 day into quarantine and they wouldn't eat. Copper suppresses their appetite. I had a 90g tank 4 years ago with 12 fish. No quarantine and never lost a fish to ich. Attempting to only introduce copper treated fish in this new aquarium was a mistake in my experience.
Its easy except not everyone has a place for a 55 gallon trash can with water in it.
Plastic bio balls! 1973!
This BRS people have no answers to query
Furan 2 isnt available in market
I am so so confused! This is an uncycled tank with no filter! OMG 20 % effort are you kidding me? This is the most complicated qt I have watched. I have a lot of fish coming in but crazy cheap like 6 bucks and 8 and 10! Went crazy on memorial day sale! Do I need to qt captive bred? After watching this though and being my tank has no fish now( just caught my mean damsel) I think I am going to take my chances! Who can afford buying new salt, a brute can, all the medications, a copper test kit, a gram scale a bubbler, a tank, pvc pipes!! For all that I can just buy new fish! I have been reefing 5 years too and have only had new fish die from what my LFS said was likely being caught by using cyanide! Not to mention I dont think freshly shipped fish can handle this especially fresh water dip fist thing! Jus too much! I hope I dont regret it!
Screw copper, do ttm and don't put the fish thru hell
Ok so this is useless cause you can’t buy furan-2! Post alternatives
And then 3 months later your fish gets ich🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️😆
Can’t find furan-2, seems to be discontinued. What can be used instead?
look for Nitrofurazone 👍
@@BRStv And what if i cant find thateither?
