    There's plenty who would argue that New Zealand tend to be better because they play "heads up rugby' or they 'play what's in front'. Well, it's not quite so simple! I'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts so please do leave me a comment down below and I'll be sure to get back to you!

      They have the ability to play in and out of structure at the appropriate times. I know it's a different game but teams like Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers in the NRL are two of the greatest teams that have a phenomenal ability to play in out of structure at the right times. You also need talented players in your team who can play eyes up footy. Usually those players with natural ability who have that X factor are the best at eyes up footy.

      Here in NZ heads up, have fun, running show off rugby is instilled into us from childhood playing on the school field at lunch time or after school at parks, but when we get into our teens we learn more structured play. So our instinctive base is the tricky fast skill based spur of the moment stuff which we go to when we have the opportunity but we are drilled with the structured analysis rugby later on. At top level it's an all round game.

      I think you're right: it really is both better "heads up" rugby, but of course supported by excellent tactical planning ahead of time, where every player knows what his role will be in a given situation.

    Put it this way .. all blacks handling skills are and always have been off the scale ...their commitment in the tackle and attack especially around the ruck is superior .. and finally once they bust through a defence and get in behind you their sheer brilliance with ball in hand and support runners absolutely busting a gut to support the ball carrier is the best in the world hence why it's try time with opposition left clutching at black shadows again and again.. if any youngsters want to learn how to play rugby ? Just watch and learn from the all blacks cos everyone else is just trying to keep up.. to maintain their dominance for decade after decade is mind blowing..

      Growing up in NZ , rugby is played constantly & in different forms touch, light version of league (ends up in full contact with no ref 🤣) ball playing skills constantly practiced. Skills of scrums/lineouts/mauls/rucks are formally taught practiced at school club levels. But common in NZ to walk down park and throw ball around & end up playing touch game with strangers. Skills are constantly used in free time.

      @@papaluskask999 I totally relate to that .. growing up in Wales pre Xbox and gaming generation all our time as kids was spent outdoors and wherever we went we always took a rugby ball .. unknown to us that's where our handling skills were developed for our school rugby and beyond .. it's plain to see now the difference in incredible handling skills ball in hand entertaing rugby Wales were known for through the 70,s throwing the ball about with accuracy .. all blacks still have that skill and there's no excuse that other teams don't have it.. put it this way when I watch my 15yr old playing rugby the handling skill at that age is not as good as it was when I was that age and it's due to today's gaming generation as opposed to my generation that went everywhere with a rugby ball ..

    The way to make sense of it is with the analogy of music. Think of the AB's in terms of jazz, there's lots of improvisation and "riffing" off each other. But what underlies that is a thorough understanding of musical theory and structure. It's what they hang the improvisation from.
    They do have rules, they don't play in their own half, unless there's a broken field in front of them. And everyone has to be able to do the basics right.

It just goes to show that once again, New Zealand is leading the world in terms of tactics: not only do they possess extremely gifted and skilled athletes, but their understanding of the use of legal shields to create holes is superb. We had a penalty around 11 min just outside Welsh 22 and No 9 chose to boot it.Had he not seen what Zamit nearly did with advantage about 7 min earlier.
    I could go on.

      A kiwi here, I love watching the boks and abs go at one another, the boks have great talent across the pitch, I feel like they are going to peak again at the right time for the next WC, I love the abs but my gut tells me the boks will win it again with their defense, kicking game and physicality! Can't wait for another bok ab final :)

      @@tpjedi Not so certain myself the Boks have a lot of old talent and experience in the team at the moment, two years is a lot of caps, and potential injuries to take before the cup. I'm worried they may be in a weakened position as they're not focusing on levelling up the young blood currently. Heck Etzebeth is on 95 caps at 30, Steyn on 72 caps at 34, le Roux at 70 caps and 32, etc, etc.
      I hope I'm wrong, but time's definitely a factor here.

      Le Roux reminds me of my rugby playing days I used to run sideways, was shit under the high ball and wasn't a great tackler.
      Incomprehensible.
      Then the game plan against England.It only works when you don't leak tries like a sieve.
      21 points is a lot to claw back.
      I don't think we've scored a backline try from.a set piece the whole year.

    Strong analysis, particularly how you picked up the blockers on kick return. Average Joe Blow watching the game Doesent often see that.
    I would say they play 1322 shape and have structured attack off Setpiece. Whenever they fall out of those maps they default to shape and try play as quick as possible with LQB being the goal.
    Turnover ball and kick return is definitely a place where people may think they’re playing heads up rugby but they would have some really strong policies around what they do with that ball, I.e get it to wide edge, come back to close edge, land ruck in the middle.

    Our U14 struggled with size in our team last season but made up for it in speed at the breakdown and hunting for the ball by their intent to commit in the tackle low. They ended up taking the championship for there grade.

    What cues do you think teams could identify and rehearse at trainings when playing against a team with flexible structures?

      @GeraintDaviesGDD  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for taking a look, Ronnie! For me helping players get their own defensive spacings right so that they can manage their own space is really important. Using the cue of 'shoot the ball in the air' is really useful I find. In other words when the ball is passed press hard, then soften feet when the ball is caught. They kind of approach help to deal with teams with multiple options as the ball can only be in one place at a time!

Robertson had the crusaders after Richie, DC, Dagg etc left and built that team back up again, only to lose something like 1000 caps of experience after 2019 when Crotty, read, Todd, Crockett, Frank's, Samy, Tamanivalu, etc retired or moved on. He's never complained about not being picked, even though his record is already far better than Foster's so don't know what you're going on about losing respect for him, all he did when he wasn't chosen is resign for the crusaders to prove his loyalty to NZ rugby.

We use to have the best players in the world in almost every position. We use to have a tough underbelly, but not anymore. We don't have that hard nosed get down and dirty, get in the trenches leader either like Ritchie Mcaw. • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  Před 2 lety +1

      I should really have explained that bit more thoroughly. 1322 is a way of describing how the forwards space themselves across the field. So in the graphic where I show the set-up you'll see that NZ have 1 forward on the left edge, then a group of 3 forwards on their feet stood in a shape off 9, they have 2 forwards in the ruck, and then another 2 forwards holding the left edge. The backs also have clear roles within the system, which tends to involve acting as options out the back off the shapes, or holding width, or with some teams acting as parts of the shapes themselves.

    They do that for fun at school in nz. 31 from set piece is ok but what u didn’t explain was how they play a shape and when they lose their shape they have zones on the field they want to hit just to setup for their next shape. Zones being close to the ruck ball🍎, midfield ball🍊and wide ball🍌. Easiest way to play flexible but also setup for ur next shape without being too structured. U could have a 31 but that is just one off to the ruck🍎 3 times to the open and one off the ruck🍎 once blind. What if I wanted to go 🍌wide early from a phase play then hit a midfield🍊and pick and go twice 🍎🍎 back to where I started, then start my 2431 shape with set variations? So it’s not about if it is structured or not it’s just switching between zone and structure. U never want to play too flexible where ur timing is out and u never want to play too structured where u are just going through the motions. The all blacks play well when they find a balance between the two.
