I left Dallas in 2002 and returned for a visit in 2012. I could hardly believe how many roads were added and expanded. Today, I'd probably get lost quite easily. Back in the mid-90s, a nice drive my wife and I enjoyed was from Irving to Cedar Hill and looping around Joe Pool Lake. Sunset drive, beautiful girl, open sunroof, cool breeze, and relaxing music. We saw some amazing lightning shows out there, as thunderstorms approached. We also got to see the Hale-Bopp comet out there, too, since it was so dark at night. Those were glorious days that I didn't appreciate nearly enough at the time. I'm guessing the population around Cedar Hill has probably grown a lot, over the past 20 years. Still, one day, I'd like to make that trip again one final time. Thanks for the video.

I thought LA had the greatest of freeways (forgetting about the traffic). This is hands down the ultimate that I have ever seen. Have never been to Texas and you just added an item in my bucket list. Phenomenal! TDoT should take over the world.

Texas crazy folks but the best roads in the nation. Even the side roads or frontage roads are better than most states interstate systems. Had my best time riding my motorcycle on the roads of Tehas'... Good stuff again FWJ

Even their "state routes" are better than most interstates given most of them are built to twice the interstate standards. There is one thing I hate about Texas freeways though, that is in the more rural areas, the offramps and onramps are very short and often throw you right into oncoming traffic (coming toward you) on the access road. Although they have to yield, I still find that very intimidating for someone who is coming from out of state.
I love Texas freeways though, they're the icon of what American freeways should be like..I would kill to have them build freeways like they have them in Texas in Atlanta.. although we're getting those express lanes, we need more highways pretty bad.
P.S. Sorry for cutting you off when I was trying to make my exit on the left +Freewayjim .. thats just kinda how we do it here in Texas.. lol

One of the things I love about living in DFW: (as well as the entire state), the relatively high speed limits on most highways/freeways, even in urban areas.
One of the things I hate about living in DFW: drivers like the white minivan that nearly wrecked into you while jumping 2 lanes at the last second to take the exit, a dime a dozen of them around here.

      @morganharris2413 Před 6 lety +3

GGRTL1 Lol, I've been to 48 states in this great country. I'd take Dallas over literally any highly populated California city. Dallas has far far FAR better traffic and transportation design, is growing much faster (more jobs, more $$$) than just about any Cali city. It has no income tax (Thanks, Texas!). Low cost of living (average house costing just $152,000!), cheap gas, etc, etc. California economic policies are going to destroy it from within. High taxes and Liberal policies are stunting growth and increasing the cost of living.
FUN FACT: A home in Dallas cost just 3.3x the average income! By comparison, a San Francisco home costs a whopping 10.2x more than the average income!

    Three things....
    1. The construction in the middle of the video is very tricky to get around. I learned that the orange signs are placed in positions that are sudden, so you have to think quickly or you'll end up getting on the wrong road. When I drove through I-35E/I-30, I learned that quickly.
    2. It was good seeing the express lanes version because I never drove those. Thanks!
    3. I had never driven on I-45 so it was good you put that on your list. I didn't realize how "green" it looked compared to the rest of the interstates leaving Dallas.

I think going as far to say that Houston has "plain" freeways is pretty insulting to every other freeway system as I think Houston, Dallas, The Bay Area, and Los Angeles have the best ones in the country and probably the world. I mean if you think Houston has plain freeways then I'd hate to see what you'd think of roads here in Kansas City :(

The really plain ones are in Austin, which is strange since it's our capital city. The freeways and interchanges especially are gray, moldy, and ugly. I love how they look in the DFW metro.

Way to go FreewayJim, that's called aggressive driving skills, the highway gods have nothing to do with it, when drivers aren't courteous, you have to seize the opportunity to merge into the desired lane. At 15:30, the Margaret Hunt bridge was very hypnotic for me, I found myself staring at the suspension cables rather than the road, (Not Good), Amazing Job!!!

The area at the beginning of the video is one of my favorite places, so active and frantic to drive through, but I have never driven down in the Express Lanes! It looks incredible! I just can't help but think how useless "Express Lanes" seem to be - nobody ever drives on them and I think that's mainly because people are confused as to what they are, like will I get charged more for driving on it, is it essentially car pool only? Signs have always been vague to me, lol. Really though this whole route is the best, some days just go out and drive around the freeway because it's so cool

Wow, Dallas's freeways makes our freeways here in the NYC area look like it's from a third world country. I thought our freeways here in the NYC area was the definition of the entire highway system here in the US, but this video proved me 100% completely wrong.

Sunbelt cities like Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and Atlanta have modern freeway systems, Los Angeles has some pretty special freeways as well, NYC has not built anything new since the mid 1960's and it shows.

1:57 Only in Texas there can be to freeways stacked on top of one another. I too was in Dallas the very same year. I was there a few months earlier than you. End of March beginning of April. Me and my husband were there to catch the Wrestlemania event that was held in Arlington. We were using a GPS system through there, but the problem was I updated it so well that the GPS was leading us to highways that were still under construction. That was very frustrating. We got lost 3 times when we were there.

He was on the tolled portion of 635 thats semi underground. For years 635 was a four-lane freeway stuck at a crawl. So they necked it down to two lanes and took 5 years to rebuild with a lower tollway. Everyone learned to get along without it in that time, so ironically there is almost no excess traffic anymore.
The non-toll portion of 635 is only 70 mph. Its only the tollways. I know the George Bush Turnpike is at 75 mph as well. Sam Rayburn tollway gets up to 75 too.
Wow didn't know there's an 85 mph highway. I-20 to El Paso gets up to 80, EBGaming13. But that's gotta be a mercy speed limit. Except the fracking boom towns Midland and Odessa, there is absolutely NOTHING along the way. Its not a short trip either.

I really liked the begging part of the LBJ Express, You were living life in the fast lane. You should played the song Life in the Fast Lane by The Eagles for the begging. Have you done the Eagles for any of your videos? I also liked how you got to continue onto 35E. that was incredible. One other thing Your counterclockwise trip around the US this year was fantastic. When I was briefly in Dallas in the 1970s there was a route called "Central Expressway" on the northeast side. It was one of Dallas' first controlled access highways. However, it had ridiculously short on ramps and was scary to use. (Even though I had a fast Camaro) Did they ever improve or reroute this corridor?
