Until I saw your video from a couple of years ago about 45s I didn't even realize some of mine I bought in the '60s were polystyrene. So for my new Technics SL-1200GR2 I bought an AT-VM95C/H for them, and a VM95ML/H for my LPs. I initially had an Ortofon 2M Red that came with my TEAC turntable on it which sounded okay. But when I played my first LP I was amazed how much better it sounded, and even my wife commented on it. Then when I went to flip the record I realized I had the conical mounted instead of the microline. That was an eye opener for me and a pleasant surprise. When I switched cartridges the ML was better, but not drastically so. I do like Audio-Technica and I just set up another system with some of my old stuff form the '90s, and my AT-140ML still sounds just fine on my old Dual CS-5000. The only other brands I'm intrigued by are Hana and Sumiko. I do like the Japanese stuff for sure.
Grados are great for bright systems. Had a Red for many years - upgraded to a Gold and cant say it was enough of a difference to me to justify the extra cost. Nice sounding cart.
I tried a VM540ML a few years ago but it was too flat sounding. I ran a Grado for years - a couple of years ago I found a Pickering XV15-200 in my workshop I bought 15 years ago and forgot about. Once I mounted it I kept going back to it after trying new stuff. I also found a Stanton 500 I must have pulled parting a table out years ago and obtained a 1mil mono stylus for it - it works great on my mid-50s and earlier lps and well-loved mono 45s. I still am tempted to try new carts but that XV15 is a wonderful fit in my system.
The VM510CB is one of my nine Cartridges (from Grado Platinum 2 to Lyra Delos, Koetsu Rosewood, Ortofon MPU GM Mono to Miyajima Zero Mono to AT 33 Mono. The 510CB sounds very okay for this price.
Right at the very end... Grado! I tried a Prestige Red, but since my tt is a direct drive, I got this big humming sound. Beware of interference because the carts are unshielded. They do sound somewhat warm, yet very good to the ear. I had to return mine, it would never have worked. On a belt drive it might work but then when the motor is on the left side of the tt, out of the direct path of cart and arm. Read into it before you go there. The quality is good though. The company itself is so nice, no fancy big office yet a building in Brooklyn.
The cartridge/phono preamplifier combination can really make or break a cartridge’s sound - in my experience. Some phono preamps are fun killers. Some are great at detail retrieval, some have good bass and some are good at vocals and midrange reproduction. My favorite combination is a Nagaoka MP 110 cartridge ($150) with a Lehmannaudio Black Cube SE phono preamp ($1,300). The price tags are mismatched but the sound combination is great. OK.... I'm not a expert on needles/cartridges. But... I do recall cartridges made from lite-density materials will sound more hollow/less-pronounced during playback. They will also pickup more room-noise. My brother is the audiophile nerd in the family. He will not use a cartridge that does not have some density to it.
I have a vm95ml that i enjoy however i wish i had done more research on which stylus to use on my 1200mkii because i think i would have been satisfied with just a bonded elliptical dont gef ne wrong the 95ml is a nice cartridge but i have LPs from new to old and just need a do it all cartridge, i was thinking about the nagaoka mp110 but theyre over $230 and hard to find. So, any suggestions on a warm cart running on my 1200 into a pair of powwred Klipsch r51?
I've owned two. They both had issues that made them unusable. One had a chipped stylus and the next had issues with shielding that caused massive pops from static. They sound good, though. :)
These days they are pretty impossible to get. Sad thing, because I would love to try it. That said, I do still have the original Technics EPC270c which came with my tt, it is based on a Nagaoka MM321. nice somewhat warm sound, average stereo separation, average detail, but with an aftermarket nude elliptical it sounds more crisp. And... those carts are, in a slightly modified way, still available as a Tonar Diabolic. Aimed at dj's but put any EPC270 in it, play at 1.7 grams and you get that taste, as they say.
Greetings and salutations, I recently purchased and received a Uturn Orbit Basic turntable with a Audio-Technica AT91B cartridge. I have been enjoying playing LPs from the early 60s, 70s and 80s in my collection. Just wanted to thank you for recommending this turntable in your videos, I am so extremely happy with this purchase. Do you think this cartridge will continue to be ok with used and garage sale records that I find? I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you again for the great audio content videos you do, also I am a serious Linux user and enjoy your Linux videos too!
The AT91B is a very solid cart with a long history. If you like what you're hearing than I say keep it rolling. U-Turn is meticulous about setup and I'm sure you're getting the best from the AT91. Replacement styli are cheap and plentiful. I recommend going with genuine AT. The yellow AT91B is good and they also have the AT91R stylus. Replace it about every 500 hours.. :)
Happy New year Why didn't you mention goldring you had an E3 said you liked it..! they've got a new one E4 now that's supposed to be very good £200. You should definitely try and get into some goldring especially the 1042 what is not particularly expensive about 400.

I love my wooden Grado Platinum 2. So I could recommend the new Platinum 3 for around 400 Euros/Dollars. Very lively, natural mids and highs, lovely.

Facts ....Ortofon and i don't get along , I do love AT stanton pickering and even empire.

I use a Nagaoka MP110 with a Technics 1200 mk5.
A great combo in my opinion.

I don't know much about them but I looked and LP Gear carries replacement styli for them. :)
