Algonquin Park Wolf Pack Encounter - 2 Day Solo Canoe Trip
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 05. 2020
- On this solo canoe trip in Algonquin Park I encounter a chorus of howling wolves only a short distance away from my camp. I travel over 70km in two days, paddling and portaging through the middle of Algonquin Park. Filmed in September 2017.

Wow, they sounded so close! What an eerie and intense experience! Great video! New sub!
Thank you so much!
Hi
Brings back memories. My Dad and I used to go canoeing and camping in Algonquin, in the early 1970's. Some of my best memories of him.
The park must have been very different back then and a very special place to make memories. Thanks for watching!
This brought back some awesome memories for me too, being out there in the freezing cold and seeing a pack howling as they crossed a frozen lake was so surreal. Great times.
Amazing how close the wolves were howling! I've heard wolves howl many times, but never that close. I even tried howling back to a pack on a northern Ontario crown land canoe trip late last fall, but they ignored my pathetic call, lol. Thanks for sharing!
It was by far the closest I have been to howling wolves and it's an experience I will never forget. I'm surprised the wolves didn't respond to your howls they normally aren't too picky. Thanks for watching!
Best wolf pack rendition I've ever heard on video they seemed extremely close.
They were extremely close, it's an experience I won't forget. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much for the canoe through memory lane. As a teenager in the late 60s I used to take campers through that exact same area. We would start at Canoe Lake and take north loops through Big Trout and Burntroot Lakes. Man to be young again, what wonderful times those were.
It's great to hear about Algonquin canoe trips memories. I've created many fond memories on personnel trips over the years as well. Those are some beautiful big Algonquin lakes. Thanks for watching!
Pretty awesome. Thanks for the portaging tips Alec.
Hey Andy, thanks for watching!! Happy to help :)
What a wonderful video! Thanks for sharing what looked to be a great trip.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a great trip. I covered lots of distance and had that amazing experience at night. Thanks for watching!
Holy moly!!! So scary but so amazing! Absolutely enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing
Happy 😊 to hear that. Hopefully I get to hear and see wolves this summer 🤞 Thanks for watching!
I went winter camping in Algonquin ~2 decades ago with the family and we had them serenade us for breakfast at sunrise. At first I thought we were breakfast but they kept a comfortable distance, it was quite the experience! Thanks for sharing!
Memories like that are hard to forget. I've never heard the wolves on a winter camping trip but hopefully I will in the future. I can only imagine how amazing it must have sounded in the dead quiet of winter. Thanks for sharing that story and for watching!
Bro, amazing ! I went to Camp Pathfinder in the 80s (on Source Lake) and we literally zigzagged across Algonquin Park-portaging handmade canvas wooden canoes... We were always on the lookout for the ever-elusive wolves, and never found them.
You are extremely lucky to have run into that pack; in all my years at Algonquin we saw plenty of moose, one black bear, and the rest of the usual suspects, but never a wolf !
Now, I live happily in the Caribbean with my family, next to the highest coastal mountain range in the world, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, applying many of the skills that I learned as a boy and teen in the Algonquin backwoods...
Paddle onwards-Noon Way !
Hey Joseph! Those must have been some nice summers at Camp Pathfinder. I have crossed paths with Pathfinder groups out in the park and I was impressed with their traditional wooden canvas canoes. I find on solo trips I tend to see more wildlife but I also got lucky with this pack. Over the years I have seen a dozen or so wolves in the Algonquin area and I appreciate every encounter. It sounds like you live in a beautiful area, I'm jealous. Thanks for watching!
Nice little trip Alec. I have to tell you I could not tell the actual wolf howl from your call, well done! That is an eerie sound in the bush at night.
Thanks, I didn't actually record myself howling so you are correct, you were only hearing the wolf howl. My wolf howl is pretty good though.
Alec you got guts. I would've swam back to my car after hearing those wolves 🤣
Haha, I was way to tired at that point to go anywhere. It took me a little longer to fall asleep that night and I kept the fire going for awhile. Thanks for watching!😀
Sweet short trip. Thanks for sharing.
No problem 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
There is nothing on earth which rivals the experience of being in close proximity to the apex predator of the woods. We are not on the menu - well done Alec.
Thanks Rob. I completely agree, we are not on the menu. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@AleconAdventures what about bears, or cougars, etc. Do you bring bear spray? How do you protect yourself?
I grew up going to summer camp in Algonquin park which included two week long backcountry canoe trips. This video is so special 😭🙌🏻 thanks for sharing! One thing I don’t miss are the trillions of mosquitoes on the portages lol.
I'm sure you made many fond memories on those Algonquin backcountry trips. Happy to hear you enjoyed the video. Bug season is just getting started😐 Thanks for watching!👍
I've missed the sound of the wolves. I haven't spent much time in the bush in the past few years. This brought me back to my happy place, thank you so much.
No worries. I'm lucky to be able to spend so much time in nature. Thanks for watching!
my cats did not appreciate the wolves lmaoo.
But for real, that sounds terrifying.
Cats are funny creatures, you will have to find them some CZcams bird/squirrel videos for cats but they may attack your screen. That's hilarious that they didn't like the wolves howling, maybe they thought they were being hunted. Thanks for watching!
FlowerChild, what are you holding in your hand?
@@Siwashable It's a bong 😋
@@flowerchildvee oh.. thought it was a dildo.
Blessed to have that experience! And I would’ve howled back too lol
I cherish every wolf experience I get! They're elusive animals.
Just clicked on this from your post on APP Facebook page. Kind of funny because I've heard a pack (Own a resort on Oxtongue) every other night for the last few weeks.. Apparently a lone wolf or small pack are roaming Oxtongue Rapids area. Extremely eerie and awesome to hear so close to home.
Hey Jay, glad you found the video. It's pretty surreal hearing a pack of wolfs howl. I saw a lone wolf in the Oxtongue area a few times this past summer. A very cool experience, especially if you're getting to hear it so often! Thanks for watching!
amazing video, thank you for sharing your experience!
My pleasure! I have fond memories of this trip. Thanks for watching!
Oh my god! I got shivers just watching the video.
It's an eerie sound. I definitely had shivers that night. Thanks for watching!
Bro that’s awesome. What an experience that must have been!
Most definitely! Thanks for watching!
That's so cool!!! I would love to be that close to wolves.
It was very cool! Thanks for checking out the video!
That was incredible. I will say I have been wanting to do this so bad but I would have been so scared
It was a little freaky but an amazing experience. Thanks for watching Mike!
Wow.... what a show. Lucky guy!!
I was very lucky 😊 thanks for watching!
Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada, KUDOS to you Sir....hiking with a pack on your back & carrying a Canoe as well !!
You 1 tough mother ??????
💯👍
Hey Derek from Nova Scotia! Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching :)
He is for sure
Awesome trip, the wolves are awesome, subbed atb Lee
Thanks for the sub!
Beautiful place, to sleep only if hanging from a tall tree, hell with those scary wolves... This night scene for me is the stuff of nightmares, it couldnt get worse for me... You dam Lunatic, lol...
Haha it was an awesome experience that I'll remember forever. I was a little more uneasy sleeping just under a tarp that night. Thanks for watching!
Great experience! Awesome awesome awesome!
I was very lucky and won't forget that night. Thanks for all the comments!
The best experience of Algonquin is hearing that. Of my 5 trips, misty lake, 3 yrs ago. Had a lovely pack with young ones signing just like that. Love it!
Thank you Alec 👍
Good memories that's for sure. I'm happy to hear you got to witness a pack howling in person as well. Thanks for watching!
I can see you got out of that tent and got that fire going real good and hot when them wolfies got in close to sniff around your site... they were figuring out whether they should eat you there and then or wait til morn!
I didn't have a tent that night just a small tarp setup beside my fire. Thanks for watching!
Awesome! I've never heard wolves that active caught on video. They were working up a frenzy - you really got them stirred up. Look forward to the next one!
I'm happy to share, it was a memorable experience for me. Thanks for watching!
I've been fortunate enough to hear AP wolves on five occasions, one in similar proximity to what you experienced, but it was during the day, which made it weird. Buddy and I were paddling a river, I don't remember for sure but I think on the Petawawa. We were s-curving our way down the river, and as we rounded a bend that went around a bit of a cliff, 20 or 30 feet tall, we heard one adult wolf with a long howl on top of that cliff. Then a pause. Then two or three adults started all howling together, and you could hear a couple of pups yipping along as well. It was an amazing moment, and jarring too because it was so unexpected and so loud! It went on for a few moments, then stopped. We never saw them of course, but we felt like they had eyes on us, and they probably did. Our next portage wasn't too far away, and we spotted some wolf scat on that portage trail.
All of my other occasions hearing them have been in the Rain/Sawyer/Jubilee area.
That's awesome! It sounds like you've spent a lot of time in Algonquin's backcountry. They are very elusive animals and
I love hearing them. I live very close to the park in the eastern wolf's territory and I only see a handful or less of them each year. Thanks for the comment!
@@AleconAdventures Its me! Moosewhizzer Dave from Algonquin Adventures! I sometimes think about retiring to Huntsville or Barrie, or somewhere closer to the park than Buffalo, but I'm pretty sure my wife would draw the line at having a longer and more severe winter than we already do....
That paddle in Opeongo is a chore...but always worth it.
Yes it is and it always seems like I have a head wind going across. Those lakes north of Opeongo make it worth it. Thanks again for watching!
Most beautiful amazing experience. I heard wolves while hiking in Northern Wisconsin next thing I know one was to my right another came up on my left and a third passed the trail in front of me. They were curious and let me be. Still the most amazing experience I've ever witnessed.
Oh wow! That is amazing. It's those moments that make backcountry adventures so worth it. Thanks for watching!
I had a similar experience last summer along the east end of lake opeongo. Returned again this year. Nowhere as close to the same response.
The best time of year to hear them is mid summer into the fall but there are never any guarantees. I cherish every wolf I hear in Algonquin. Thanks for watching!
I took my American wife to Temagami (10 days) the first time she'd ever gone camping even overnight. Hearing wolves really scared her (she, who is not afraid of anything). I found it comforting. Wolves chased out the bears, according to the locals. They are awesome creatures. We heard them all around and tracked them in the morning, but never saw one. Saw a bunny.
That sounds like an amazing trip! I thoroughly enjoy hearing wolves in the backcountry but I would agree that you rarely see them. They are beautiful creatures. Thanks for watching!
Excellent Video....Thanks
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
So brave... Wow! I subbed...
Thanks for the sub!
Enjoyed your video - I see you had a Langford like mine in this one but a lighter weight see-through one in more recent trip. Why the change? Incidentally, that wolf pack recording was amazing!
The Langford is my original canoe that I've had since elementary school. I've used and abused it alot. It may have been in need of some repairs or I just felt like paddling a different canoe on that trip. I'm glad you liked that wolf recording. Thanks for watching!
I’m shocked this isnt more popular, just LISTEN to those howls!
I'm glad you enjoyed it so much!😀
I would have been quickly building up the fire for more light and protection!!! What’s the canoe model. Looks like a good companion :-)
A camp fire is very comforting and gives you a sense of security especially when you're alone in the woods. I was using an old Langford 16.6ft Prospector, my first canoe that I've had since elementary school. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful area
It truly is, thanks for watching!
You rock dude
Thanks! It's always good to be out on a solo canoe trip.👍
me cago del miedo........demasiado intensa tu experiencia!!!
😀👍
You can hear the pup weez at the end of the exhale, less than a km from you id say.
Ya definitely less than a km. They sounded very close.
WHAT was the splash in the distance at 3:13
Good eye, that was a beaver slapping it's tail on the water to let the other beavers know I was paddling by. Thanks for watching!
Great video, I have a question, I did one camping night in my city. I started to hear the wolfs sound near us.We were 2 people. Is it safe to stay? We tried to make noise and to have many lights next to our fire (we were about to leave). Is there any chance that these wolves attacking us in our future camping plans? We did it in a national park, based on the information, we only have wolfs, golden jackals and striped hyena. Also, we are appreciating any recommendation about the other animals.
Hi Ibrahem, in any scenario it is always wise to use your best judgement. Most of the time animals are more afraid of you then you are of them. Animals are also somewhat predictable and you can educate yourself on their behaviors. There are many things you can do to minimize unwanted wildlife encounters, staying in a group, making noise, keeping a clean campsite, are just some of the ways. Keep learning and keep exploring 👍
@@AleconAdventures Many thank. Looking forward your next videos
Awesome! New sub here👍
Thanks for the sub! and thanks for watching!
Wow, I would have been so scared lol
😆 A cozy campfire was all the comfort I needed. Thanks for watching!
I realize this is not the most exciting thing in your video but what is the poor over container you're using to make coffee?
I was using a MSR Mugmate Filter and it fit nicely on top of my Stanley insulated mug. Thanks for watching!
That would be the scariest thing for me hearing the wolfs so close to my 🏕 camp!
It's a little spooky but amazing at the same time. Thanks for checking out the video!
so cool
Good to hear!
@@AleconAdventures wish to camping with you one day
What about bears, or cougars, etc. Do you bring bear spray? How do you protect yourself? Does bear spray work on wolves?
In our area we only have black bears and it is very rare for them to cause any problems. We carry bear spray most of the time but have never had to use it in the almost 20 years I've been canoe tripping. Bear spray would work to deter any animal but the best thing you can do to avoid an encounter is keep a clean campsite and store your food properly.
Eeeeerie! Sweet sound though. I just got back from a weekend stay on the first loop of Western Uplands and had a pack on the other side of Maggie Lake respond to a coyote squeak by my site. What a beautiful experience.
Sounds like a great time and you probably also enjoyed that hot weather for November. Thanks for watching!
How long do your cold cuts last while camping
Depends on the weather but cold cuts with lots of salt like salami will last forever. Thanks for watching
i'd be calling 911 for an immediate helicopter evac.
I was a little nervous, but I kept the fire going and my knife close by lol
New subscriber now I’m binging. Great video.
Thanks for subscribing, enjoy!
It was a little close for comfort, then what happened?
I made my fire bigger and slowly fell asleep. I didn't hear any other howls throughout the night. Thanks for watching!
Howl at the moon!!
I tend to do that even when the wolves aren't around.😆
Where did you get that coffee filter?
I think MEC, it's the MSR Mug Mate coffee/tea filter.
Have you seen the pyramids in Algonquin?
No I haven't, am I missing out? I've never heard of such things in Algonquin.
Was Coywolf calls... reading the menu
Glad they decided I wasn't on their menu that night!
@@AleconAdventures it's good to learn the different calls and even foot drops of different predators so you can know what you are dealing with. You can find these recordings on CZcams and websites that have them. Stay safe!!
Probably a few Eastern Coyote / Eastern Wolf hybrids in that pack...
That could be... thanks for watching!
@@jackwelch9713 Firearms are prohibited in Algonquin Park so bear spray and a knife/axe are your best options for predator protection. However it's highly unlikely to have to deal with them. Thanks for watching!
@@AleconAdventures Ahh! Bear Spray it is for me!! :-) Thank you!
Maybe they wanted you to join their pack!
I would gladly join their pack🐺👍
I've heard wolves in the park but nothing like that. I know they never attack humans but I still wouldn't sleep that night.
I was definitely on alert that night especially being solo. After a long day paddling and portaging I was exhausted though and feel asleep no problem. Thanks for watching!
What would happen if you tried howling back
I did howl back the first few times and they seemed to move closer. Once they got too close I didn't howl back anymore because I didn't want to find out! Thanks for watching 🙂
Did this with a pack of coyotes last year in Utah. Pitch black and they couldn't be 100 feet away.
That's awesome Tommy, a memorable experience that's for sure. Thanks for watching!
What a magical experience! Of course I say that from the comfort of my home. If I was solo, I'd definitely be on high alert! Thank you so much for sharing this.
It's an experience I won't soon forget. I've heard wolves many times but this was definitely the closest. Thanks for watching!
But aren't you afraid of them attacking you?
No not really. It would be too much work for them to try and kill me. There are lots of medium sized animals around that make perfect meals. Thanks for watching!
Am I crazy or does it sound like they killed a another animal or something. Coyote? Idk I feel like I heard something die
It could be possible I'm no expert. Thank for watching!
probably had to change your underwear after the wolf howls came close
Ya I was a little hesitant to go to sleep after that😅
Sorry to just dump this on you but TAG you're it! I was tagged for a 10 question challenge and you are one of the lucky ones! LoL, don't feel obligated at all, I had to tag 5 people. Here's a link to the video: czcams.com/video/s9K31IkoeqU/video.html
Have a good one!
Watched your question challenge! Appreciate the tag 👍 🍻
Yeah, I'll be sleeping in the canoe thanks
😄 Oh they can swim too. Thanks for watching!
One of the howls sounds like a coyote.
Coyotes are generally absent from Algonquin since wolves will regularly kill any trespasser into their territory. It is possible though and I have heard that Coyotes have on occasion bred with wolves in Algonquin. Thanks for watching!
@@AleconAdventures Interesting and no problem cool video! Here in Illinois we have Coyotes and we have forest environments wolves used to be in Illinois but were hunted out. Coyotes do the same to Red Foxes here in Illinois they kill Foxes and invade their Fox dens killing the Fox pups. That’s why I don’t see Red Foxes often because of Coyotes.
wolves playing with coyotes
There is some mixing and hybrids in the Algonquin area. Thanks for watching!
@@AleconAdventures I’ve only heard them separately. I had no idea about the hybrids. So that could very well be a pack that has yelpers and howlers. Crazy. 🤙
The sound at 3:40. Not a coyote.
Oh the howl of an Algonquin Wolf, you can feel it in your bones. Thanks for watching!
u got some big gonads my friend
It was an experience that's for sure!
kind of scary.
But awesome at the same time. Thanks for watching!
Lone male calling its mate
That could possibly be, thanks for watching!
dont howl back at a pack of wolves unless you want them fools creepin' up on you.
Maybe I do😜 Thanks for watching!
this is why I don't go outside
What! This should be a reason to go outside and hear the wolves. It's an amazing experience that you won't forget. Thanks for watching!
Don't use background music we want the raw sound of nature
Gotta love the sounds of nature
