  • Musician Reacts to Surface Pressure from Disney's Encanto!
    With a more hip-hop vibe, this has to be one of my favourite songs from this film. Lin Manuel-Miranda has another stroke of genius when writing this song, which is beautifully performed by Jessica Darrow. I may have to do a cover of this song one day...
    Be sure to check out my previous video where I react to We Don't Talk About Bruno:

      I saw a video of Lin-Manuel Miranda, the song writer, explaining that every song have Hispanic influence. This song have the reggaeton influence, and Isabella (the flower gifted sister) her song is more of the latino rock.

    The character is extremely strong because that’s her “gift”. I have never seen a muscular woman in Disney animation before, and her voice is so gruff- it’s just so cool!!! (The gifts in the movie are basically magical powers each character in that family has. The girl with glasses did not get one though.)
    I heard kids are wanting more merchandise of her rather then Isabella (the fancy flower girl)

    • @JamaalXMusic
      @JamaalXMusic  Před 2 lety +66

      Yeah I heard about her toys being the most desirable! Just proof that kids have been waiting for a visibly strong female character for a very long time! 😊 It definitely helps when they have an amazing song 👍🏾

      Luisa also actively trains as well. In the opening numbers she's running on a 'treadmill' and lifting weights, she's still very strong when she loses her power

    • @SerenityM16
      @SerenityM16 Před 2 lety +22

      I adore the fact that Luisa is just as feminine as she is buff 💪
      Also I think Isabella would do better if she wasn’t in her “princess” Señorita Perfecta dress and either punk rock dresses she has towards the end

    • @mingchen7704
      @mingchen7704 Před 2 lety +8

      Can you blame them? While she look like she can snap a man like twig (and she can). She also have one of the most relatable struggle in modern society because of her power.
      While Isabella also have her own issues, Isabella is still the “princess” where as she is the “warrior”. Something that are so rarely portrayed in female. Of course she would have her own fan base. Hell, I kind of wish media would show more female “warriors”.

    The Titanic and donkey imagery were perfect. Titanic was the "unsinkable ship" that wasn't, and Louisa is expected to be the "strong one," but doesn't feel very strong. Mules are associated with manual labor, just like she is, and the unicorn donkeys are just as fantastical as the idea of having some time for relaxation. Everything about this movie is incredible. So much attention to detail.

    • @ArloMathis
      @ArloMathis Před 2 lety +19

      Furthermore, the 'Titanic' says Madrigal on the side where the name would be. She says the ship (the family) won't swerve. They refuse to deviate and barrel ahead trusting Louisa to just *handle* whatever is in their way, even if it's an iceberg several times the size of the ship. Not even touching on the metaphor that is the iceberg itself, referencing many things not the least of which is the 'more below the surface' linking to wanting to be more than just 'the strong one' and so many other things.

    • @laco403
      @laco403 Před 2 lety +7

      @@ArloMathis Absolutely! The lyrics and the fact that the ship says Madrigal really drive home the metaphor, it's so good!

    if you go through more of these reaction videos to this song you can see how many people emote with it.. how many elder siblings and particularly children of first generation migrants feel this kind of pressure and can relate to it.. the nr of people who sobbed through half the song or had to stop watching altogether is exceptional... I think we should commend Disney for having the guts to break stereotypes they help create...by making a movie that has no villain but deals with intergenerational trauma in such a powerful fashion. I feel that this is possibly the most adult oriented animation movie they have ever created, and it also does a lot for representation of non stereotypical femininity and female protagonists..

    "I'm as strong as the crust of the Earth is" is a great line because the crust of the Earth is its' weakest part. We just assume it's the toughest part because it's the only part we interact with/see. We assume Luisa is tough because she's buff, but she's just as emotionally vulnerable as anyone else. I feel like most families have a Luisa in them. (Also to answer your question: the movie takes place somewhere inbetween 1940-1955 according to the director and the artbook, so the Titanic sinking would've already happened and would be accurate to the timeline.)

    The symbolism of the Unicorn Donkey speaks directly to her character it is in itself a visual oxymoron where it is both a fantasy and a workhorse. The unicorn is a fantasy and not practical, whereas the Donkey is anything but that. The pressure of the Anxiety she feels to maintain being the bigger sister and taking on the burden from the entire family when she would rather just relax and live a more fantasy life in her eyes. Great reaction to this song. Liked and Subscribed.
