I think with the strap buckles, it has been made even easier to clip around a thicker tree branch; which would always be my preference to putting a bag on the ground.

Great review, Moorlander. What I like about big dump pouches is they're so easy to load and unload. No fiddly pockets hidden therein that disappear gear if you're going to transfer contents to another bag. I DO like organization pockets, but how many times do I switch bags only to find I missed switching over gear from some clever pocket folded in the last bag. Big, simple, and fast. I'm gonna give it a try.. Thanks again.

The strap from the courier sold separately? That would be a dream come true. It's the only complaint I've got about the satchel. If you fill out the space it's getting heavy and my skinny officeshoulders cry for some padding. Got one from another bag but it looks out of place ..
For more organisation and/or space: the e&e-pouch fits perfectly on one side, it's usually on the backside of my satchel. The navtel pouch sits comfortably on the strap. Now you know why I need some padding .. 😉
Nice video as always buddy. Stay safe

    Lot of enthusiasm there, sir.
I used mine for a year both as a EDC bag to work and in various outdoor activities, This is the review I sent to to HelikonTex:
Review: Helikon Bushcraft Satchel, April 2020
    Colour: Adaptive green
    Bought for my own money.
This is a 12 months test. I have used it as my EDC and on several walks in the bush. My initial thoughts early on have changed very little if any from the final verdict.
    Book test
The idea behind the book test is to show if any medium sized object, like a book, a box, a field stove or any other hard object, will be carried with comfort.
In the Bushcraft satchel the book like object will not be carried with any great comfort unless a lot of other bulky materials will be stuffed into bag. The book slid down and ended up on the bottom of the bag, bouncing the bag against the hip in an uncomfortable manner, even with some other items like a jacket in the bag. In an everyday situation it will not do. Possibly a flexible partition wall will secure the book like object in a manner we will not be bothered by it.
    Bulk test
At a glance the shape and size fool your eye into believing this bag is a bit small. Wrong. The Bushcraft satchel will take quite a lot of bulky items like jackets, food, thermos flasks, equipment and smaller stoves. It is up to you how much you are willing to hang around your body like you will have to do with a shoulder strap arrangement. Thanks to a thin and flexible material and design the items carried inside will shape a bit around your body, unlike it would in a classic bicycle messenger bag for instance. This comes at a price, as it is not weatherproof in any way and you will have to wrap your stuff in plastic bags if you expect bad weather. However, this is just a matter of taste.
    Bits n´pieces test
Guess the internal pockets and the outside pocket will take care of most needs. A couple of pen holders would be great, though. I keep a carabiner hook fastened to one of the molle loops in case I need to hook my gloves or hat to it while doing something temporarily.
    Details
Considering the intended use, I´d like to see somewhat longer zipper tabs. If you are wearing gloves or even mittens in a colder environment, you will have to remove whatever you have on your hand before you can operate the zippers with any confidence. I love the two-way zipper on the main compartment, why not have such a simple function on the outside pocket? The little covers at the end of the zippers cover the slider beautifully. If the function is needed, I don´t know, though, but it´s there and does not do any harm.
The inside pockets with bottoms for flasks or other items are a very nice idea and they function very well. I have a collapsible umbrella in one and a mid-size thermos mug in the other every day. Great function as those items does not roll around or get in the way or make it uncomfortable. Molle is always good, if one doesn´t overdo it on an outdoor product, as one can strap on equipment and smaller pockets to one´s satisfaction. The slim pockets on the sides is a good idea, however nothing I have used so far. Myself like to carry as many items inside the bag or on my body, especially critical equipment like knives. Not totally convinced by the function of cinch straps on the sides on a bag like this but I guess they do no harm. One day I may get some use for them.
The buckles at the ends of the shoulder straps are the same on both ends. Silly as ever as I cannot buckle up the strap, female to male buckle, to use as a belt or a carrier of other things, nor close the buckles on bag and use the resulting short sling as a handle. So, all in all the buckles are a lost function to me. It just looks functional but only add production costs. Also, any buckle is a possible weak point and may break in an outdoor situation. Not good.
The netted bag on the inside is a nice touch. I keep a field dressing and a smaller folding knife in mine, always at the ready if it would come to it. One thing I´d like to see is a couple of pen sleeves, maybe in the smaller outside pocket. The net material seems to wear out a bit, though.
    General quality
Very nice feel to the fabric. Nice looking stitches. All looks like durable work and no sloppy craftmanship here. Very well done! After a light wash the inside weatherproofing material has come off, not good. The internal net pocket shows some minor chafing from the plastic wrapping of the field dressing I´m carrying in the bag. Any thoughts on swapping the netting to a true fabric?
    Adaptability
Molle, side pockets, bottle sleeves and great size of compartments. I think it will be enough to make any user individualize it according to one´s needs at any specific time.
    Comfort and carry ability
This is really the number one point in any test I do, trying out in a shop or as a bought item. The function to carry what I want to drag along and do it in as much comfort as I can, is what it all comes down to in a bag or any other carrier system. A bag must do what it is designed to do, and this goes for a walk around town as well as a month-long expedition. Unfortunately, this is also the point where this bag fails.
The material will go nicely around your body, shoulder strap is of moderate with and stiffness, so no problem there. However, now this is the big issue with this bag, and it is something I have hated ever since buying it: the shoulder strap is not possible to shorten for a normal size guy like me. I´d like to be able to shorten the strap so it rides a bit up on my back, especially if I carry heavier stuff. A fully loaded bag will bounce around on my hip or my behind. The only way to carry it loaded is to round the strap around one´s shoulders and let it ride against the lower back.
I´m 90 kilos spread over 183 cm. I would like to say I´m rather average in build. The bag will if not filled very much or just half filled, bounce around on my bottom or slowly work its way around, from my backside to the front. Every step I take will bump it a bit and if not stopped with a hand on it or pushed back every few steps, it will work its way to the front. Extremely annoying. As the shoulder strap is constructed it can now expand to the right length of a big guy, but not the opposite. And as I said, I think I´m an average guy when it comes to size. Very bad, indeed! If I could shorten the strap it would ride much higher and I could get around the problem. While looking in a mirror I can say it look good, but it is the function of bag staying put I´m after. A second strap to get the bag to ride closer to my body would be a desirable detail.
    Final thoughts
A great quality product with a huge question mark hanging over it due to the strap design. If I had had the luxury to test the bag in a shop before buying it this would be a deal breaker.
If I would load it full and hang axes and extra pockets on the outside, I would like to have the option of adjusting the strap to let the bag ride at its most comfortable point even more. This point may also change due to what I´m wearing during my walk. Now I do not have this option. Get it sorted guys!
Would I buy this bag again now when I have tested it? No. It will take too much weight and bulk to carry over my shoulder for any longer walk and too many of its details are not doing what they should do.

      @MoorlanderEDC  Před 2 lety +1

That's a pretty detailed review there and incredibly thorough. Do you think if HT sold the strap from the Urban Courier separately this would alleviate some of the shortcomings of the pack for you? Which in itself is a shame as you'd have to buy two products in order to get the bag you'd like. On a separate but related note. I spoke with the team from Wisport this weekend at IWA 2022. They have a line called the War Hog range with a similar satchel to this however it's lined, slightly smaller and designed more for urban life. Definitely one to check out. Thanks for watching, and I hope you're well and safe wherever you find yourself

    • @stellanstellan8708
      @stellanstellan8708 Před 2 lety

@@MoorlanderEDC Hi, Yes, possibly a second strap around the waist would stop the bag from bouncing around and make books and other hard/square objects to slide down. However, one of the main problems is the too long shoulder strap that makes the bag ride on my hip rather than a bit higher up, no strap in the world could do anything about this as I already shortened the shoulder strap as far as it goes. The shoulder strap is buckled to the bag and unless I totally redo the stitching there is no way to deal with it. If the strap was clipped onto ring attachments on the bag I could possibly find another strap, but... I have used the satchel extensively as I wanted to test it and not just chuck it. For me it is too big as a sidebag, I´d rather go for a backpack if I needed that much gear in the woods.

    Ay Moorlander EDC
First time viewer from across the pond. Liked your review. I have purchased this vary same haversack two years ago. Although I seldom camp with only my Haversack...
I find this haversack Top of the line quality. I would like to critique your load out ability. I always roll with my US Poncho & Wobbie blanket. Simply I fold up my Wobbie into my Pancho. I unhook my rear strap from my haversack and lay it flat on table. I twist rear strap 10 or 12 times in the opposite direction I will be rolling my Poncho & Wobbie on to the rear strap. I lay my strap into the Poncho then Roll up into a 14 of 16 inch log. If necessary I will twist flat the haversack strap so it Lay's flat as usual. Using 2 Canadian jam knot to secure roll to strap. Because the roll is riding behind haversack it stays out of the way and don't even know or feel the roll. FYI .....

Hi DH, glad to hear my reviews helped... but made the choice harder 😀 This is a hard question. I think for EDC they're both great, however the Courier is the winner. It's a more versatile bag to work in lots of ways. Great to add your laptop for the office (plus the laptop will be protected), take with you a city break, or just walking out and about with. The Bushcraft satchel is great, and I use it loads for EDC, but I don't think I'd ever trust a laptop in it. The Courier has better internal storage and organisation... Plus the best ever shoulder strap. Sounds like I'm hating a lot on the Satchel :D Which ever one you get, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. All the best my friend

Which is why i agree with your suggestion for an urban bag. I'm not sure if it aksi needs to be a bit smaller- the dangerous then is entering into handbag size territory. I might still get this ( with that strap?) in grey for my winter (!) EDC.

After researching this bag, I bought a much better "fishing bag" for around $20 and it has much better double front clips

Well I think that Helikon will response with this: Try EDC Courier Bag or maybe buy the latest Bushcraft Haversack . I owned the large variant of Courier Bag that replaced this Satchel . There is a huuuge velcro panel 😉

Hey Papa Mike. Very true. I think this would fill a gap between the Courier and the smaller EDC shoulder bag you reviewed 😊 thanks for watching buddy

Were you able to fit a pistol in the bag?

Hi, yes, I have a glock 19x replica and it fits in the front pocket. There aren't any ways to attach it in there though. No molle or hook & loop, os it would just rattle around. Hope this helps Ogre, have a great weekend

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... You won't believe how many times I've looked at that title and looked straight past it.I guess with a bushcraft satchel, it's even harder to see the wood for the trees 😀 Consider it changed. Thanks buddy 👍

Yep, I love this bags for EDC. It's great... even though I fully appreciate it was initially designed for bushcraft. Highly recommended. Have a great week Patrick and thanks for commenting

@@MoorlanderEDC.. My question is more like, what does EDC stand for. I'm not american, and you americans have a lot of shortened words that are like a secret language 😅

😀 sorry... EDC stands for Every Day Carry. I use this satchel more for everyday use then I do for bushcraft. ps. I'm from the Kingdom of the Moorlands in the United Kingdom of Great Britain... not America 😂
