  • Just because you're a beginner doesn't mean you should be drawing cartoon looking buildings! This video is designed for beginners but with a drawing technique that gives even beginner drawings a feeling of realism. Start with all the tools you need so you can start to practice them all from your first drawing. Print the reference photo from the Channel Community Page and have a go drawing this same cottage yourself.

As a beginner artist I stood no chance of doing this 😭

Try a simplified version. Don’t add the stonework or some of the other details. Just try and get the main angles correct. 😀

A master!...seems trivial but the way he measured the dimensions and lined up objects..good instruction!

I’m thinking of trying to draw again I haven’t touched it since art in school and wasn’t taught simple things like you have mentioned in drawings I will be trying this technique soon loved this ❤. Xx

Thank you Stephen! For these beautiful in-depth videos. Extremely detailed and helpful. Just starting drawing with ink after ages. Will be going through all the videos during the weekend😊

Thanks Joshi, but do you realise how many there are? Maybe you’ll get through some of them though. Have fun, and draw as well. 😀

    Another very helpful lesson, Stephen.
As someone who previously adopted a monoline cartoony technique in my sketching, it’s been a revelation for me to see you achieve variation in line-weight by increasing/decreasing pressure on the pen.
For me,the technique is definitely not as easy as you make it look. For example, I can’t work out how you get the little dark spots of ink in corners where different angled strokes meet and intersect, but I’ll keep practicing.
Thank you for the frequency of your new content.

Thanks Duncan. I assume it’s either from lines overlapping, or from lingering just a moment with the pen before I start to draw the line. It may not be intentional. 😀

@@stephentraversart Thanks for taking the time to explain what you’re doing, Stephen. I’ll try lingering for a moment before launching into a line. That sounds much simpler than learning a new technique. 😅

My drawing over the years( because of my age being 10) are actually pretty good and I've got 10% of drawing experience and I can actually draw a pushed onto its side building with shadows.

And to think, in a galaxy far, far away, I almost became one myself!😀. Thanks Mark. Please tell any architecture students you know.

Have you ever played Paper Mario Thousand Year Door? I was wondering if you would perhaps like to make a video about the architecture of said door. The big door leads to a fancy (and creepy) room, which has a door, which leads to this weird "cave." Maybe you could make a picture of the opening of the door showing the room and _it's_ open door, showing the cave. You might have to CZcams it. Basically, I'm interested to see the three rooms in one shot or left-to-right movement. Does that make sense and maybe spark your interest?

Only ever played Age of Empires about 15 years ago. Totally outside my conceptualisation I’m afraid. 🫣

Another value adding tutorial. I struggle when I go to the next step, I.e. the wash. Can you please give some tips on wash after sketching. Can't wait to watch...Thank you Sir...🙏🙏🙏

Thanks Kashi. I don’t use washes I’m afraid. I use sketch markers of varying darknesses. Alcohol based inks. 😀

I notice how steady and sure your hands and strokes are, especialy when making those details. How do I develop this? Does it have anything to do with the angle of the pen and how I hold the pen? Any suggested exercises?
You are phenomenal. Thank you for shàring your knowledge.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Před 2 měsíci

Angle of pen etc all have an impact, but I never worked on them. It just happened as I drew, concentrating on the effects I wanted to create, as the best way to get them. Intentional practice, self critiquing, and more practice, is how I got there. When something worked, I kept doing it, when it didn’t, I explored something new. This is where that process is for me right now. 😀

Hi - lovely drawing, are you using a 0.3 liner for those crisp lines? Hah and right at the end you mention it 😀 Lovely work - def going to give this a try.

You could try simplifying the building, but still using it for proportions and perspective angles. 😀
