What I really wonder is, if Mercury really is just the remaining core of a mostly destroyed planet then how big might it have been originally? I mean our system is odd in many ways but one is that we have no "super earths" what if Mercury was that missing planet type but either got hit by something or just blown away by it proximity to the sun? It is so fascinating to speculate about the cosmos, and it seems like there is no end to the hypothetical possibilities. I love it.

That's litterly what happened to mercury. You answered your own question.

Could it have been a hot Jupiter gas giant that got too close to the Sun and only the core is left?

At 6:25 it should be "a white dwarf in the middle of the gas cloud", not galaxy.

How is mercury the last earth-like planet in the solar system? Mars or Venus would be closer to being earth-like…
