    My five year old son wanted me to ask if "any other animal in the water can kill a whale shark." He also asked if whale sharks can kill great whites. :)

    • @BlueWorldTV
      @BlueWorldTV  Před 9 lety +3

      Rebecca Goulart The only things killed by Whale sharks are small fish and plankton. Not many things make a meal of the whale shark except when they are very small. I don't think there is much evidence that white sharks eat whale sharks. That doesn't mean it isn't possible, but certainly not very common. For one thing, they mostly hang out in different environments. White sharks prefer cooler, coastal waters, feeding on seals and sea lions. Whale sharks prefer a more tropical environment.

    So...I have a hypothesis...
    Pups are about a foot long, right? In other words, they're pretty vulnerable to predation by...just about every marine predator there is. So, I'm thinking the countershading and dappling helps the pups stay "hidden" from said predators as they grow. They just don't "outgrow" it, and it stays with them into adulthood.
    Love your show, love Shark Academy in particular. I know these are old episodes, but I love revisting them every now and then. C: Thank you so much Mr. Bird!

      @dominicfeliciano9462 Před 3 lety +2

      Name: Destiny. Species: Whale shark. Personality: Kind, funny, helpful, talkative, ecstatic, near-sighted, intelligent, friendly, eccentric, beautiful, sympathetic, clumsy, sweet, and compassionate. Appearance: Slender cerulean whale shark with blue-gray eyes. Alignment: Good. Home: Marine Life Institute (formerly) Great Barrier Reef (currently.) Allies: Dory, Marlin, Jenny, Charlie, Bailey, Nemo, and Hank. Enemies: Motormaster’s truck drivers. Likes: Being fed. Dislikes: Walls, banging her head, and her poor vision. Fate: Escapes from the Institute and helps tutor Mr. Ray’s class. Quote:” Dory? Dory? Dory? Dory! You and I were friends! We were pipe pals! Thank yooouuuuu!” Official bio:” Destiny may be a clumsy swimmer, but she has a big heart. She has a big everything, actually… Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea. Destiny resides in the Marine Life Institute where one day an oddly familiar blue tang fish named Dory falls into her pool. Destiny is admittedly embarrassed by her obvious lack of grace, a product of poor eyesight (very near-sighted), but Dory thinks she swims beautifully. And Dory is delighted to learn that her super-sized friend speaks whale, too. Destiny and Dory used to talk through the pipes when they were little.”

    If only all sharks were like whale sharks and ate plankton... Different adaptations for different reasons, I guess.
    It's kind of crazy how whale sharks can have so many pups when whales only have about 1 at a time. I guess there are advantages and disadvantages to egg-laying versus placental births.
