After much contemplation at 3am (as one does), I have come away with a new meaning for this song. Of course there’s the element of that person that won’t leave you but I also think (at least in my case) that my relationship with her was the most selfless I’ll ever be and ever will be. I was selfless to the point of being a little destructive to myself but I have learned my lesson. That’s all part of it. She got the best of me but that doesn’t mean whoever in the future won’t get all of me.

Was engaged to a man I gave a million chances gave the best of me to him and became a shell of me, recently gathered enough strength to leave and I’m going through it but this song weirdly makes me feel better.
I have listened to this song every day since it was released. I am 52 years old now. When I was 17yrs old I met Suzy. I fell so hard for her. We got engaged a year later. We sent out the wedding invitations when I was 19 years old. She was pregnant but only we knew. One day she shows up and she left some guy sitting in the Porsche 924 I had bought her a couple months back. She looks at me and says “I had an abortion John”. She took off the ring I gave her and dropped it on the table. Then she said “I had your name taken off the lease at the apartment”. I rented that place as soon as we found out she was pregnant. She was 18yrs old and I didn’t want her parents to be yelling at her and stressing her out. Besides, we had to live somewhere when we got married. She said that “Joe was moving in”. She didn’t cry. Even look upset. She told me not to come there or she would get a restraining order and left me standing there. I had to call every single member of my family and tell them I wasn’t getting married Saturday. I was so humiliated. I will NEVER understand how she could murder my son, have me spend every cent I had to buy her that red Porsche and then paying first and last month’s rent plus the deposit to get that apartment. So she could move that guy in. I never for a second saw that stuff coming. Anyway, like I said I am 52 yrs old now. I’ve never been married. I don’t have any children. I went 10 years after that day happened before I went on date. I am now with a woman who wants to get
married and have children. She’s 23.years younger than me. I’m still too scared because that Suzy. SHE GOT THE BEST OF ME.

My husband committed suicide in 2017. He definatly got the best of me. It not quite talking about the feelings of entering a new relationship but I cant help but feel this song when it says you get what's left of me because she got the best of me. I struggle daily with my feelings and keep thinking it's not fair for my new husband and his response is always it's not fair for you. I love him and care about him but hate that I can never love him the way I loved my first husband.
