  • Charly Henley, with BAK Industries, shows how easy it is to install the all new BakFlip MX4 tonneau cover. The MX4 features heavy-duty aluminum matte finish panels, enhanced premium density foam core, and upgraded latch housing components. An all new integrated tailgate seal allows the cover to be closed with the tailgate in the closed or open position. You will have 100% access to your truck bed and it is all backed by a 3-year warranty.

    F150 guys:
    1) Don't mount the weatherstrip on the bed. If you wanted to use the truck without the cover you'll have some fragile unsightly material there. Use an alcohol pad or two and wipe down the underside of the rubber overhang. Mount the weatherstrip under the rubber overhang, right up against the frame of the cover.
    2) That drain hose is way too long (and in the way) and you don't need to drill a hole in your plug. Use that hole just to the side of the drain. It's a really tight fit but you can cut 5 or so inches off the drain hose on each side. Shove the accordion piece on the bakflip down drain and the long smooth tip through the hole (I had to fiddle with mine and elongate it slightly by pressing it together). If it kinks up on you just keep trimming off of the accordion side until you get a decent length for a 90 degree sweep. It's up and out of the way under the side track and much cleaner of an installation. It's also a friction fit and won't go anywhere unless you yank it off of each hole.
    3) The back window is convex, the front of the bed is concave. You won't ever hit it on the sides before the middle and the cover is pretty rigid. Mount the pad dead center in the middle of the upper rib and call it a day.
Happy customer, zero leaks and the bed stays bone dry. I know some people say they leak but not a drop out of mine.

I’ve called the manufacturer a few times since I purchased my cover.
Lots of water getting in the bed.
I have a drop in bed liner.
I was told to mount the adhesive to underside of narrow portion of cover.
I did this and just today realized it wasn’t even touching the bulkhead.
Then today was told to adhere it to bulkhead bed liner… which I did.
Now just have to wait to see if I’m still getting lots of water.
      Any suggestions would be appreciated:)

This was a very basic install video that I found helpful. Some things that are left out: My MX4 did not include all the pieces. I was missing the shims and 1 of the 6 clamps. The cover can be installed with a clamp only on the front and rear edge of the rail and it will still work. Additionally, I had to remove the self tapping screws that hold on the rear latches and adjust them so rear cover would close and lock when dropped. As shipped the rear cover did not latch shut without slamming it. After adjusting the latches inward and re-drilling the cover closes like it should. Also, some of the factory drilled holes were not completely drilled out so I required a drill and a 5/16 drill bit.

Fitting the cover to the tracks was easy. And it appears to be a very solid cover. I'm satisfied and glad I opted to pay more.

I just installed the MX4 on my 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. I chose the BakFlip because I had one on my 2018 ZR2 and it worked well. Installation was not difficult, however the spacing and shimming sheet only covers Colorados up to 2016. I didn't seem to need shims so that was not an issue. Folded up against the cab the BakFlip was up against the light on the top of the cab. The D shaped cab bumpers were of no help, but I used the included much thicker foam pads to resolve that problem. The holes to hold the threaded posts in the cover for the buckle ends were 3/16 and the posts were too large to fit. I drilled them out to 7/32 and that worked. Step 7 has the rear clamp 6 inches from the tailgate; the configuration of the bed allows the clamp no closer than 9 inches. Four rubber washers are included, but only two used in the directions. I used the additional washers on the large flat bolts that secure the cover on the top.

As a purchaser of the MX4 who installed it myself, may I please suggest you amend your video to include in detail where to properly place the cover when placing it on the rails. You seem to go quickly past that and from a distance and it would be helpful to know exactly how things should line up at the front and back of the truck bed, including up close shots. I spent a lot of time trying to make sure I lined things up correctly and was still unsure the entire time. It could mean the difference between a properly installed cover and an improperly installed cover.

There's 2 but he put the second one in the wrong spot I believe.. shouldn't it be in between the metal piece and the cover? Not the nut and the metal piece, won't get an seal there

Your video doesn't address what to do when the Bakflip is sent with damaged rails and your customer service closes at noon on a Friday. Nor did it show the fact your website Captcha doesn't allow users to click on the I'm not a robot to submit a service request. Is there another video I should look for to get service?

I have had two BAKFlip hard tonneau covers, the F1 and the MX4 and both were on Tacoma's. The MX4 has a design flaw with 2016 Tacoma at the front of the bed on each side. Two foam blocks are installed on each side and they leave two holes for water to flow into. Enough water comes in to soak the carpet bed mat and make a wet mess.
Also the two rubber seals that go down both sides of the cover need to be widened as water can move in under the seals where the covers fold. Finally, water comes in around the tail gate on both sides.
My BAKFlip MX4 was installed by a BAKFlip dealer and I watched them install it step-by-step in accordance with the instructions and video guide. No tonneau cover is 100% water proof, but the MX4 design allows too much water to come into the bed.
The MX4 is not a quality BAKFlip product and I would not purchase it again for any truck. Even though the F1 had problems with the tailgate seal, it is designed better and worked better on my 2015 Tacoma.
I called Customer Service and their response was to seal the leaks with silicone sealant. My question is why did BAKFlip produce a substandard tonneau cover and recommend it for the 2016 Tacoma? Customer service was not helpful or responsive. If you buy a BAKFlip MX4, then you are your own as far as getting any problems fixed.
My recommendation is to purchase another model or brand, as the MX4 is not road ready.

These covers are in serious need of better engineering and higher quality materials.I purchased one for my truck and the buckles that are suppose to hold the cover up in its open position broke on the first use. They are cheap plastic buckles and buckle retainers and broke the first time I used them at 45mph while taking trash to my dump. They sell replacement buckles that are the exact same as the ones that broke, so didn’t make sense to order new ones. The tonneau cover was so poorly designed (materials) I was not even able to sell it for half the price I paid for it, the only way I could get rid of it was sell the truck.

Just installed mine, it was all great except when i pull on the cable on the last panel drivers side the teflon latch doesn't retract...that is a problem. Tried the 1-844-779-8986 help number but got a message saying that number wasn't available from my calling area. I'm in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Any ideas?

      Hi Dave,
Just checked with our team and it sounds like you need a replacement cable latch kit. Could you email your contact and shipping info to social@bakindustries.com and we will get that out to you.

How about a review of your product if you have winter, snow and freezing temperature.
Snow melts, turns into water then it gets cold again. Water freezes, not just on top, it will go into places where it wouldn’t before cause yes, it’s not waterproof. My tailgate is frozen, can’t move it at all. Never happened before i got Bakflip mx4. On top ice sticks to it like glue and instructions say clearly you cannot open it if that happens.
If someone tells you it works well they are sitting in a warm garage. I will never buy it again, even if someone gave it for free. Save some more money and buy a real one.
That is the best advice anyone can give you about Bakflip.

Why wouldn't the nut go on the back side of the clip holding the side rail on so you wouldn't snag your leg on the threads of the excess bolt that's sticking out when you were up in the bed sorting cargo. This top looks iffy and would not last a month for someone who uses a truck for work. Those drain tube's would get ripped off or crushed in the first week of use on one of my truck's and one of my guys would try to tie something to that kickstand car antenna looking thing you got going there and rip it off. Not a fan of the self adhesive cushion tape deal either, they couldn't build something in that wasn't so cheesy? My research and practical knowledge is telling me a true over the the truck rails top with no interior rails or tubes is going to be the best bet - Sorry.

QC for Bak Industries is terrible…should have know something would be wrong with this product when the bulkhead seal was crushed and damaged…turns out the end caps weren’t even installed properly on the driver side so they flew off….that’s some bullshit

These directions are horrible!!!! The guy doesn't say anything about how to shim and adjust the locking sections. On the final flip section I had to drill new holes for the pull lock assembly. Mine wouldn't release and it was hard to close the locks where hitting to hard on the rails.
