One thing you mentioned which I identify with is that effect that the previously music you've heard have a strong influence in general. I've came up with an entire song from the first 3 notes which I've heard of a friend's guitar solo. I confess that I spent years around the same music, the same albums and the same artists, and in the moment that I break free of that habit, I can open my hears to new music without thinking much about, and here's when new music is easy to create.
