Nautilus 5726: The Ultimate Do It All Patek & Genta's Best Watch

  • As my search for my next grail watch continues, it was only natural that at some point I would review the legendary Nautilus by Patek Philippe. As an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak fan, I never took much interest in Gerald Genta's super luxury steel watch creation. What a mistake!
In this video I explore why this is possibly the greatest watch he ever designed. I look at the history of its creation, how it wears, and why it commands such respect. I also discuss how it has become the most desired super luxury watch in recent years and why the Patek Philippe Nautilus Annual Calendar Moon Phase (57261A010) is perhaps one of the best incarnations of this renowned watch.
Join me as I take a look at another watch of my wildest dreams and find out why this is the best do it all everyday Patek.

Reading the comments about the Nautilus reminds that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure there is a watch for every person and a person for every watch. Some like bling while others like simplicity. Even though I personally don't care for the Nautilus I appreciate knowing more about it, its design and designer. So thanks TGV, for the education and knowing more helps me appreciate more.

Expensive and distinctive, so people know what you have at a distance. Best of all, it's not a Rolex. Personally, I think it looks like a tacky watch that might have been sold at Sears in the 70s.

Arguably the best bang for buck Nautilus with the most useful set of complications, but I’m biased as an owner of this reference for the 2nd time pairing it with my 5960 P Anthracite dial. 120m water resistance trumps the 5712 and all the Royal Oaks. Mine has the grey dial making it more versatile as opposed to the blue or white. Good review regardless what Archie Luxury says about you ☝🏻😉

Not related to the video but I felt I had to comment.
I have only come across your channel in the past couple of weeks but must have watched 50+ of your videos already.
I have liked watches for a few years and have an Oris Aquis Titan big second hand, Seiko grey dawn samurai and Tag professional.
With it being my wife and I’s 30th birthdays this year, and we have decided to buy each other an extra special watch, I have really got into the finer details of watches and their heritages etc and have learnt loads from your videos and find them so watchable compared to others so thank you and please keep producing and releasing the quality content.

    Dear Sir,
Let me begin by saying that your channel and reviews, which resemble mini documentaries, are truly second-to-none. Your passion and enthusiasm comes through on everything you do, and is truly contagious. I credit you for reminding me of the joy of wearing a timepiece again. Years ago I fell victim to the belief that having a cellphone on one's person at all times made wearing a wristwatch obsolete. I realize now how silly that was. Thank you for pulling me back from the brink of the technological monotony that is our world today.
With that being said, I would like to make an observation that I hope you will take to heart. Please consider that many of us, the "pleebs" as I believe Hugo referred to us, have a love and appreciation for the arts and culture that vastly outstrips our purses. Regardless of my heart and soul dreaming of "the finer things", the reality is, they only live in my dreams. Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko shall never be for the likes of me. Even if I had that kind of disposable income, I would invest it in my children's education, as it is my obligation to provide for them a better life than I have been dealt.
With great excitement, I purchased an SNK809 after enjoying your review. I wore it for two days before accepting that the numbers on the dial were simply too small for me to read. I gifted it to my better-half as her timex was long overdue for retirement. She was elated, and for that I was happy. I will not be purchasing another watch anytime soon as it is not in my budget. I chose to share my story with you as a way of illustrating that many of us will never know what it's like to own many of the fine timepieces that have crossed your desk. However, it doesn't mean we appreciate them any less. I am sure I speak for the multitudes when I say I forgive you for the time you spend nitpicking a clasp, the shape of a bezel, or a non-hackable movement etc.
Thank you for your tremendous efforts and for the joy you share with so many. Please give my regards to Hugo.
    Thank you.

  • @TheRunningManZ
    @TheRunningManZ Před 4 lety +2

I really like this model Nautilus in particular. The black markers pop beautifully on that silvered dial. But all that money and it has no hacking and even more frustratingly, no sizing adjustments in the bracelet, that really needs to change in the next model IMO.
Personally I don’t get the sports hype around these. A Nautilus could just never be a daily wearer for me, that steel brushed and polished bezel would have me inching around every door frame, door handle, basically anything that’s wrist height!
I think for the wear everyday and bang them about sports watches, i’d much rather be looking at Rolex, GS, Omega, Breitling, Tudor etc etc or something fancy like Blancpain or Breguet if I wanted to flex a little. Then getting a beautiful dressy watch for special occasions from Patek, probably in gold and ideally with an annual calendar complication.
I can wear a sub or an Explorer etc and forget its there daily. But then still smile when I check the time. I don’t mind so much about the wear and tear from daily wear in those because they feel built for taking it. I don’t think I could ever wear a Nautilus or Royal Oak without wanting to bubble wrap it first! I guess your perspective changes when you have Patek money, if ur a multi millionaire, scuffing your watch bezel is no big deal!
The Nautilus is just beautiful, but it’s about as sporty compared with real sports watches as a 4X4 SUV is an off-roader when compared with a Defender or something.

Good evening TGV, great you bring on the Nautilus! Yes the Nautilus is Genta‘s masterpiece. To speak openplay, the Nautilus is a watch that grows. I was not a big fan of the Nautilus when I started to get into watches, but with the time I really got into the design. The inclusion of the moonphase complication is georgious in this piece, great hybrid between sport and dress. Best regards!

Hello, I’m curious as to how you can obtain such watches from WatchBox. I understand you have a working relationship with them. But do they keep a sample of watches for review and sell the ones that are not on the sample or are the watches you review all in their sales inventory? If the latter, how do they ensure it is in the intended sales condition prior to lending it to you for review?

Thanks for this series, TGV - it’s giving me exposure to things I would not otherwise have considered. Are the Nautilus and Royal Oak movements as robust as Rolex? I’m guessing not - maybe like comparing Maserati to Land Rover.
TGV, at some point downstream it would be interesting for you to come back and talk about which of these high end pieces you personally liked best, compared to the others, and why. (I think the Romain Gauthier is going to be pretty difficult to beat, ultimately.)

What a capolavoro! Seriously... both your review and the watch itself... in the end I still prefer the royal oak myself. Have a wonderful day

I'm quite new to watch collection and was just wondering if it's important to be gentle when wearing automatic watches? I've got a seiko skx and don't want to harm the movement , should I not move (rigerously)?? Maybe not shake my arm or wrist much 😂

It is hard for me not to like a watch with a moonphase. My eye is on the more attainable JLC Master Control Moonphase. I am so glad I have not developed a taste for the Nautilus!!!! It is however nice to learn about a watch I'll never own. I'll admit it is kind of cool. Haha.
    Thanks for the review.

I'm not understanding the connection to Watchbox with TGV, can someone help me out? How does this business relationship function?

Tgv gets access to a bunch of top tier watches for....well, i really don't even know. Not sure why watchbox is even bothering. Seems like they're getting nothing out of this. My guess is they planned to bring him on all the live shows they do but then noticed that everyone hates him over there, so they scraped that idea.

I didn't know Genta got his inspiration from a sci-fi novel to design a watch! One can really draw inspiration from anything. It's also interesting how Genta came up with futuristic design for it's time, which remains as a classic design today.

When I got a chance to handle one I thought it was a little underwhelming. The Calatrava I expected to be a bit boring but I thought it was exquisite. The Reverso really surprised me as well. JLC’s finishing is incredible for the price.

I would love to see a TGV review of the IWC big pilot. Maybe a look at the first 5002 ref and the newest one?

Hey gentry's I have a major question, I currently have a Citizen Eco Drive Dive watch priced at around $150 I'm asking for a really nice watch for my birthday and that's it and I want a Seiko SKX but there are so many options. I am currently looking into the SKX007 or "Mini Turtle" which one do you guys recommend? Please respond thank you!

a lot of very high end watches don't have hacking. I think it's dumb, but it's a concious decision suppodedly to help keep accuracy over time (by not hitting the balance Wheel with a lever to stop it)

I'm not sure if this is too niche, but I was wondering if you could do a video on reliable companies and manufacturers? Or if you could give a pointer to where to go and what to look for in terms of reliability. With the internet being so widespread, it is increasingly easy to come across brands I've never heard of, but seem to be able to talk the talk. Which is strangely common. A little info on myself. I'm from the UK and have just finished college/6thForm and have began a new job. It's rather low pay until I save up and get myself on my own two feet and living for myself. I'm fairly new to watches, I own a rotary, a seiko, and an orient. I didn't pay anymore that £170 for any of these. The seiko was on sale from 350 to 170. But my budget is anywhere up to 300 at the moment. I'd maybe consider pushing that to 400 or 500 if it's a particularly special piece. But as for my original point. There are many watch companies out there, how easy is it to decrypt and decipher which are legitimate and which are pushing false stock? Any info would be much appreciated and as always, keep up the cracking videos.
