  • Economy Watch: India's Youth Face Rising Unemployment | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has released a report on the Indian workforce. It says, India's youth make up almost 83% of the unemployed population. Although youth employment saw an uptick from 2000 to 2019, the pandemic years have witnessed a sharp decline. The study points out that educated youths have faced much higher levels of unemployment during this period. This comes as leading economies - from Europe to China are also facing a jobs crisis.
How do global employment trends affect jobs in India? What challenges do upcoming graduates face - as they prepare to enter India’s jobs market? Palki Sharma brings you a report.

The arrival of the BJP in power brought about a significant lack of private job opportunities for both young individuals and professionals. This issue was particularly prevalent in the sales sector, as numerous Indian manufacturing companies terminated the employment of sales professionals due to the imposition of excessively high sales targets. Consequently, many individuals either voluntarily resigned from their positions or were callously dismissed by their respective companies.
In a disheartening turn of events, several Indian manufacturing companies abruptly altered their HR policies, thereby excluding individuals above the age of 35 from job opportunities. This discriminatory practice further exacerbated the already dire situation, leaving many experienced professionals without employment prospects.
It is regrettable that when Adani acquired ACC and Ambuja cement, the anticipated creation of new job opportunities for sales professionals did not materialize. Instead, what we witnessed was a significant number of employees losing their jobs as a result of the company takeover. Additionally, the immense pressure placed on the remaining workforce led to many individuals choosing to resign from their positions. This unfortunate series of events highlights the detrimental impact of such high-pressure environments on both job security and employee well-being.
When the BJP came to power, only a select few individuals saw a significant increase in their earnings, leaving the majority of Indians struggling to make ends meet. Those who benefitted the most from BJP's policies include -
biased media outlets and their journalists, corrupt politicians, a handful of wealthy businessmen, bureaucrats, and high-ranking government officials.

I had initially planned to retire at 62, work part-time, and save money, but the impact of high prices on various goods and services has significantly disrupted my retirement plan. I'm worried about whether those who experienced the 2008 financial crisis had it easier than I currently am. The volatility of the stock market is a concern as my income has decreased, and I fear that I won't be able to contribute as much as before, potentially jeopardizing my retirement savings.

The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

Under paid employment by greedy capitalists is the actual problem. Just do the math. 70 hours per week and 25 thousand rupees monthly salary translates to 1 dollar per hour pay with 99 dollars sucked as commission in between from end client dollars. Please ask Narayan Murthy to raise the salary which has not changed since the last 20 years. Instead of demanding 70 hours per week and not reimbursing even death certificate cost of 10 dollars when they die from cardiac arrest by overworking. He is not a humble man at all. He just gifted 250 crores to his just born grandson and even snatches money from employees pathetic salaries towards his wife Sudha's charity so that she can get Padma Bhushan. India should fix chronic capitalism. Otherwise there is no use of Stock market pump which only benefits the already rich. His son divorced, daughter lived-in and both are not in India now but he wants middle class India to slog their asses off so that he can make more billions of dollars. His son in law is serving the same British who exploited India for centuries. Murthy has the audacity to tell how Chinese work harder than Indians. In China, Jack Ma was sent to JAIL when he rubbished his own countrymen because of whom he became a billionaire in the first place. Jack Ma has never opened his mouth or wagged his tail since. Lot of good people and NRIs are requesting Modi to do the same to Murthy please who only talks about corruption in India but ducks questions on low wages. Speaking of corruption, Murthy went to corrupt DK Sivakumar for protection when Kannada activists demanded answers for not offering jobs to locals as promised after grabbing their land for dirt cheap prices to setup his flashy campuses. Infosys wants 3 months notice period and you cannot work in Wipro, TCS, CTS, HCL for a year. But Infosys can make an employee work in projects from both Pepsi and Coca-Cola simultaneously! Heights of exploitation and slavery. Labor laws in India are non existent and NRIS will return to India only because they get cheap maid, cheap driver, cheap dentist. Indians are not cheap for god sake.

India did blunder, 1980 s and 1990 s we needed 2 child policy mandatorily. Now it a big problem .. 1.40 billion is not a small number.

Because few other things that has become completely normal are doing 7 to 8 rounds of interviews and putting positions on hold and hiring no one, only to post exact same post in few weeks and then we have the worst, hire someone and after the resign old job and are about to start in a week or day, say cost cutting and layoffs, hell some even layoffs one week after joining work…reason cost cutting.

Is it going to be primarily the PM’s two buddies? And unlike western economies that support and subsidize the SME sector, India subsidizes the largest companies. The SME sector can barely survive. Fathers worked, were able to look after the entire family, which is wife, kids, maybe even a maid to help with the chores, maybe even the dependant parents and we did not have to survive with foreign goods. Mothers ran the home, saw to the nourishment, education, values, savings for the future and if you were lucky enjoyed a trip to your native village once a year for your festival. But as soon as we welcomed partnerships from abroad we saw women flooding the market and the end result is empty homes, all struggling to pay high interests, all wanting to go abroad, children suffering from neglect and broken families and broken dreams. I say let us get back to family values like we did in India if not very soon India will be like USA or UK with high crime rete, broken families and a corrupt way of living.

Current generation didnt fell into this trap by themselves, they were drawn into it....Who created this condition that, in marriage you got to have a govt. job and have to be from a upper caste category????...its the previous generation. Also Having both parents working is a blessing for a child as he wont have to look after the parents financially.
Its the previous generation that judge each and everyone based on the social status of how many cars and houses he or she has.

I have Never seen a Person as Stupid as this guy. Just imagine ... in a household surviving on the income from one person, what will happen if/when that Person is fired from that job ? People like this Guy do Not deserve a Family. For the likes of Him, His so-called Values are more important than the Future of His Children.

Demographic dividend is a double edged sword. If a country has a well educated population, then obviously it's a benefit, on the contrary, a country like India the literacy is only 70%, majority of the population is non-skilled and work in agriculture, also these people can't find job also because of their caste. You're literally feeding someone who cannot help to grow the economy, it has become a dead weight. Why do you think China had a one-child policy to control its population growth ? If not, they wouldn't be able to feed its 1.4 billion people.

The whole blady education system is rotten in India, just increasing the numbers of IITs, IIMs and NITs are not going to solve the problems. Many students from the above institutes are very very average,false-fully brag about the Brand. There are 21 IITs ,23 IIMs and 31 NITs,but the quality of Profs are below standard , and the students are not capable of doing the jobs,so job less.U.S. & Canada dreams are over , life is very tough out there.

@@debashishbramha Please correct me if I'm wrong IITs are only renowned in India, not globally. The top echelon of Indians are smart and hard working, but they don't stay in India to help build the country. One of my colleagues is an Indian, I asked him why he and his family didn't want to stay in India, he said the corruption is his main reason, he much prefers to seek a better lifestyle abroad.

The problem is everyone wants to either be a govt employee or be in IT industry. This is simply stupid. The next industry is already here - defence industry where govt is spending like water. Also one industry is going to always need qualified people is healthcare. Govt should strategize on this.

What is seemingly happening is India is producing people in greater numbers at a faster pace than their economy can keep up hence their unemployment and, immigration problems. It is something many have noticed here in Canada. It maybe wise for more Indians in India to study Economics in their field of studies which will help them to make better choices when it comes to families and their country. Nothing is wrong with India, just a change in mindset is needed.
