    If you build a rappelling tower, you can train on the gear in a lit and open environment. A good size bluff makes a great rappelling tower, once you install a ladder. Learning the gear in a hole is trouble. There are corporate climbing area in larger cities, we call them the padded rooms. It is good to practice using the gear and getting over that uneasy feeling when in a high place. You have the connections to create a rope course.

    • @Ballentyne817
      @Ballentyne817 Před měsícem +7

      The harnesses they are using are avarage at best , they should be using proper 3 point harnesses rope access style systems, these are like the ones you keep in an emergency if all else fails kinda situ. Being comfortable in a harness is a massive part of feeling safe, I spend 8/10 hours a day in my harness in suspension working on skyscrapers bridges wind turbines, familiarity in the climbing system goes hand in hand with the comfort of the system.
      I keep seeing so may youtubers without a clue, without edge protection with no backup lines or DRT (dual rope technique) using random bits of kit that dont complement each other and a complete lack of real training but a boat load of hope.

    • @kensmith8832
      @kensmith8832 Před měsícem +3

      @@Ballentyne817 You are right about the backup gear! Usually, a first time climber will only have enough to get the job done. Most people have no idea how to use a Petzl Ascension. It takes time to learn to trust the gear. The horned figure 8 was nice to see being used, as it is a beginner item. The Swiss seats are much lighter and easier to get out of than the profession harness. Sounded like they were using a dynamic rope, which reminds me of the Army ropes back in the 1980's.

    • @Ballentyne817
      @Ballentyne817 Před měsícem +3

      @@kensmith8832 Figure 8 for first time climbers 99% of the time are being backed up by a belayer not just SRT and working in a confined space having the use of both hands is whats needed. I don't agree about putting a harness on is harder that's bs man, its way easya to use a pro harness like a Petzl/beal and provides heaps of support in all the right places, if you have a petzl on your are rigged for rescue and have the correct points to enable a very quick rescue, always rig to rescue. Dynamic rope shouldn't be used for decent work its way to stretchy and those ropes were not new, anything that gives over 5% stretch its ok for rock climbing but not abseiling, they should be using a static rope. back in late 90s we used dynamic in the Marines and lads were getting hurt because of the stretch when running down forwards and not stopping soon enough. it only take 5 days to do a professional level 1 IRATA climbing course cost less than $1000 bucks and can save your life and those around you because you are tought from day one, how to rescue not only yourself but others also.

    • @tasbrock
      @tasbrock Před měsícem +3

      Using a break rack in cave would provide a little more control descending. A rope walker system would have made the climb back out a heck of a lot easier and you would have had multiple attachments to the rope making resting easy as well.

    That cave was very cool. This access system could have been improved. That twin line anchor is not great, also if they had rigged for rescue the tail up top on the unused side of the alpine could have, with a better primary anchor, been reanchored and used as a back up in a 3:1 for emergency haul or even been dropped as a second line to get to Mikey. Anyway Matt you keep finding these little gems on your property. Look forward to seeing your high ropes course set up.
