The Shepherd Has Arrived - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

- Friends the readings for this Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time are interwoven with each other in a very interesting way. I want to start with the first reading from Jeremiah, then look at the Gospel from Mark, and then circle back to the second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, which I think sheds the most light on the thematics here-namely, God’s desire to shepherd his people, and the arrival of the shepherd in Christ.

I've given up paying attention to the homilies delivered locally by priests in my area of Australia; they lack depth and conviction, quite frankly! You are my "go to" before I attend Mass on Sunday mornings. Thank you very much Bishop Barron for these weekly Sunday sermons. It's critical now, more than ever, for Catholics to "arm" themselves with Truth and Catholic catechism.

Pray for your Priests, Pope, Hierarchy of the Churc. I know it can be difficult but remember it is a Spiritual War. Who is under attack more than the one who cradles Jesus everyday in the Eucharist, celebrating the Mass. Offer 1 Hail Mary from the Heart for your brother Priests. ❤

Oh, good Shepard, guide me, lead me, help me live my life so that I won't be forgotten by Your Love and Mercy. Whatever You want me to do, I will do it, because my life, my education, my skills my everything is Yours, every day. Amen. (That was on a prayer card that I prayed every day for 15 years. I got it from one of my grandparents.)

This reminds me of this scripture from The Gospel of John" They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him because they do not recognise the voice of strangers". It's so true that natural instrict that draws us, as my natural instinct draws me to the Catholic Church, where I felt comfort that I've never felt anywhere else. As my natural instinct drew me to Jesus when I was just less than 10 years old. As if that natural instinct was a magnet, you just can't resist.
The two beams of the wood of the cross point north, south, east and west-offering forgiveness to all.
God bless Bishop Barron thank you for being our shepherd.
St Paul (or a follower)’s letter to the Ephesians is one of the finest summations of Christian theology - Bishop Barron captures its essentials beautifully! 😅

As I reflected on these readings, I came to a similar conclusion, that Jesus Christ is the promised Good Shepherd. He leads us to the peace that comes from reconciling us to God, and leads us in the ways of Eternal Life. And listening to this homily had a special touch after I attended Bishop Barron's talk at Lucas Oil Stadium this past Saturday at the NEC. He shepherds in the spirit of the Good Shepherd so that we can set the Word and the World on fire, as he said at the end of his talk. He clearly meant the world but it was slightly amusing that he put in a subtle plug for his own organization.

Love Prophet Jeremiah, “I know your name in your mother’s womb” and God chose him to be a prophet to save the people. Similarly, God has called on clergy and laity to speak on the sanctity of life and sacredness of marriage but few would rise up to the occasion due to political persecution like the time of Jeremiah. Pray for mighty shepherds with moral courage to speak the truth in this time of moral confusion.

Excellent talk for Christians of all backgrounds. Thank you Bishop Barron and Word on Fire.
As a shepherd he knows the meadows where we can be free to gaze and rest for he knows our heart desire is pure love and wholeness not perfection. If we let our guards down and let his piercing sword strike our hearts with his holy fire to extract the hurt and sealed the wound with his healing love we would be healed .
A contrite heart is only freed when we confess and repent exposing our wounds to Jesus just the way he showed us in the cross while asking for mercy and forgiveness for our sins .
