- The world's first SAFEGE monorail transit system is documented from construction to opening in March of 1970. The French-developed SAFEGE system utilizes steel box beams in which bogies run inside, protected from elements such as weather. This funky/fun documentary by Fajima Productions Ltd. shows track installation, tunnel construction, vehicle fabrication, vehicle testing and the grand opening. The monorail was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries using licensed SAFEGE technology. The 6.6-kilometer line is mostly single-tracked, with trains passing each other using highly-reliable monorail switches. Mitsubishi later went on to build a larger SAFEGE monorail system for Chiba City. Further information on monorails can be found at The Monorail Society website (monorails.org). My apologies for the video quality and occasional image distortion, this was transferred from a very old videotape. 湘南モノレール開業までの建設記録(いわばﾒｲｷﾝｸﾞ)を記した映画｡全編英語ｾﾘﾌは英語ﾏｽﾀｰ志願にはもってこいの一作｡終盤の開業ｼｰﾝ､ﾌﾞﾗｽﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞのﾏｰﾁﾝｸﾞ演奏や拍手が臨場感高める｡車両の走行音は今では聞けない(全車5000系列VVVF制御車に統一)｡いつの日か開業50周年(2020年),記念ｸDVDとして発売して皆様に歴史を感じてほしい｡(当然本家日本語ｾﾘﾌ)

I have fond memories of riding this and watching you and David Ice film it from inside the cars and at some great viewing angles outside on the ground. This was indeed a fun day with you. I loved watching the cars sway on turns and remember standing underneath and watching one of the switches change positions as the trains came and went out of the station - easy way to share just 1 track. ちょうどこの月が開業50周年を迎えたが、残念ながら記念マーク披露及び授賞式がコロナショック影響で休催となり､記念マークも暫定的なものとなった模様｡大船駅に来ても記念マークらしきものはなく普段の表情まんまであった｡記念入場券だけは発売中である｡
コロナショックに耐えられず後味の悪い記念日であった｡
建設中の映像は貴重です。

にも収録された｡また今年先月30日BSﾌｼﾞ"鉄道伝説"で湘南ﾓﾉﾚｰﾙ建設から開業までの秘話が放送された｡
最後の最後で右下のコカ・コーラの看板がなぜか目立った｡今はもう改装な建て替え等でなくなっているかも｡

"The world's first suspended monorail" - this is not true. The Wuppertal's system is 70 years older! That's more than this system is old itself
Hi, no, you're not quite right. He said ''Worlds first using the SAFEGE System''. Although Wuppertal had the worlds first monorail with regular passenger use, it was not based on the SAFEGE System as mentioned in the video.

@@johnwiiu7005 Well, actually the word's first suspended duo-rail, true monorail rolling stock is wider than the elevated structure they require.
That suspended monorail in Wuppertal has hang-over-side railcars (thus wider than the elevated structure) and switching is quite cumbersome, contrary to what he said: "operation of switching devices are easy in a suspended monorail". However the SAFEGE seems to be about as simple as conventional rail in terms of switching.
However, SAFEGE points and monorail turnouts do not need crossover frogs like those of conventional rail points.
