Each dot is a file, and every line is a directory or folder. At the start of development, you can see a bunch of directories created that hold stuff like audio files, models, scripts etc.
Near the end of development all the directories are pretty much in place and only new files appear or are replaced.
The end result is the entire project file that's represented by branches (directories) and leaves (files)

Honestly you've been a great inspiration to finally make good on my dream to start developing games. Been hoping to get into it for 10 years now but life just keeps getting in the way. Any advise you'd give yourself when you started out?

Thanks for the kind words. I generally recommend to just commit to it, the first few weeks were rather difficult for me but after the initial hurdle is passed, you'll start to see progress very quickly. It sounds super cliche but it really is a matter of not giving up, and picking up the software(s) day after day.

do different colours of dots represent different file types?

Yeah, it's sort of hard to tell them apart because the tones are very similar for most of the separate file types. But audio files are red, scripts are pink, and the big yellow/purple branch on the right side holds all of the image files.
