  • Leo didn't create launch coverage for Intel 14th Gen when it launched, even though he had the processors in hand. He explains why, and takes the time to produce what we would consider more 'interesting' content focusing around the latest key Gigabyte Z790 Aorus motherboards.
    The two boards are:
    Z790 Aorus Master X £599.99
    Z790 Aorus Pro X £419.99

What I absolutely love about the Pro X is the USB-C with DP Alt-Mode. It means I can have a graphics tablet attached with ONLY a single USB-C cable instead of the previous need for 3 cables... The only other MB that can do this (Z690/Z790) is the proart creator. I went with Dominator Titanium 96GB 6400 kit and it works flawlessly with XMP, it's not on their QVL - but as the manufacturers say, they just don't get to test every single RAM kit. Amazingly, I scored 37 000 multicore in R23, MCE off.

Hi Leo, very informative and good focus on Gigabyte boards, I have had good success with gigabyte in recent years, I like that Master X but its very expensive, the Pro X looks like a more sensible solution and would be ideal for a new white themed build.

Leo, thanks for your great reviews. It's a solid channel for builders that need verification and insights to specifications prior to committing to builds. I have been using GIGABYTE exclusively for motherboards and GPUs and CORSAIR for everything related to cases, PSUs, cooling etc., and a, switching between G.SKILL and CORSAIR for memory. It's always been solid components for reliable builds, suitable for a great many years of service and I highly recommend these hardware vendors.

Mr Leo, i admire the restraint with refraining from doing a review of 14th gen instead of what many other reviewers did which were basically just brand slander video's. The vast majority of people don't really care about all the bias driven brand mudslinging that often happens in the PC enthusiasm space. We all have our preferences and opinions which is absolutely fine. However, when producing video's, it would appear most professional to not allow opinions to trickle in these videos. In my opinion, personal preference of the reviewer matters not to me and when reviewers use that opinion to influence their audience is when their content looses it honesty and reliability. So it is on these points that i say that this video is a shining example of how reviews should be made and the content on display in this presentation is made in the manner which it should be. I couldn't ask for a better tech video. Intel nor AMD needs to be the best all around all the time and i personally don't want to see content where one brand is placed on a pedestal over another. Double thumbs up from me.

@@historianfabulousio5128 Them and Hardware unboxed allow their videos to devolve into a childish mess because they go off on pointless tangents which are driven by their own personal hate for something. I'm personally okay that people like one and not the other; no issue. It's when these influencers have to keep telling me as a viewer over and over and over again that they hate one brand,,, i personally loose interest and feel they have no credibility. Simply because, their video instead of being about the subject of the content, end up becoming shaped overall by their personal brand hate and the content is formed around showing why they hate the brand.

I couldn't have said it better...I personally like and buy Intel products...my money my choice I don't watch videos on AMD products because not my preference but when they go off and AMD tangents in an Intel product video they lose me and I stop watching...I come for information on the products...in this case they are Intel mobos...I wonder who would be the target audience for a z790 video 🤷🏿‍♂️. so he definitely earned my sub and hardware unboxed definitely lost it as the AMD bias continues even on their z790 video smh

Awesome channel by the way. I'm in the process of planning a new build with an I9 14900K and was interested in the AORUS PROX or MASTERX. You mentioned about undervolting the processor. Saw one of your videos where you did this on an MSI board showing the BIOS screens. Would you be kind enough either to show how you do this on the GIGABYTE BIOS for these boards (maybe in your next PC build you mentioned at the end of the video), or could you point me to what settings you need to change and values to put in and I can work it out from there. Thanks in advance,

Not that it particularly matters for this video.. but when you have an M.2 drive in the top slot you're giving up 8 PCI lanes shared with the top PCI-E slot. So the 4080 in this demo was running in X8 mode. This seems quite ridiculous since the top M.2 slot has the 'best' cooling solution attached.

Great video as always. Can anyone tell me if the 14th gen CPUs just slot into older mainboards that support 13th gen, though? So far the BIOSes I've looked at don't mention any support for new CPUs and I am still stuck at thinking about making a Sonic build with the ASRock Z790 PG Sonic and with 13th and 14th gen CPUs being virtually identical in price, I'd kinda feel bad about using 13th just to be on the safe side.

On MSI boards I too noticed the same for my less expensive 5600X, but the undervolting of these was already a recommendation, however, I do find it weird, that it wants to run it with a lot more voltage than it actually requires. Undervolting lowers the temperature by 5 C° or less, depending on the values, case etc. Anyway, these look fantastic, with a board like that it would be nice to try Intel, especially with the LCD case.

I seen some people get 7200 with the Pro X, but I want more reviewers to verify these claims. DDR 7200 is easy to buy and is still quite affordable, but almost no reviewer online or on CZcams tests this with reviews. I may see DDR 6000 and the rare occasional DDR 6400 though. The general consensus seems to be that the 14700K is the best deal from Intel 14th gen. It trails near the 14900K and often beats the 13900K in gaming, offers up to a 14% uplift in multi-thread relative to the 13700K and consistently has much better 1% lows than X3D CPUs while pricing near the 7800X3D. The only drawback is likely power draw and cooling, though it should be possible to ameliorate it a bit with an undervolt.

It is sad that Gigabyte tries to hide all the features on their new X boards and charge more for their white boards and give you less. It is the same with AMD x670e/B650 boards as they sell you the same name boards and add Ice and X and lower the PCB layers to 6. Gigabyte hides their features like ALC897 Codec audio and just call it High Def. and force you to find it somewhere in all their Docs. Gigabyte has no problem showing the ALC 1220 Codec in the main description. The Pro X would have been the perfect board if done the right way Like M.2 gen 5 and PCIe Gen 5 but they didn't and they still charge way to much just to get white. If you use the Gen5 M.2 you only Get 8X on the PCIe WHY on the Z790 Pro X and charge more as it is white.

You need at first try a better cooling solution.

Intel can catch AMD in gaming when using fast memory kits.
The only thing that puts me off is that you'll have to outlay more cash for the higher speed RAM itself and the CPU will be using circa 3x the wattage to achieve this comparable performance.
The 7800x3d only uses about 50w in gaming workloads which is impressive and you don't need to spend much to get a sufficient cooler for it.

I love these boards, but ive made the decision my next system will be AMD - just to try a new platform. I also think Intel are struggling massively as this generation seems such a waste of time. Will be interesting to see their progress in next 2 years.

Why would anyone buy these motherboards?. When the 15th gen requires a new motherboard socket.

JUST 'CAUSE there are not 15th gen cpus outside...people lives nowadays!!!

14th Gen uses PER core throttling/voltage, 13th/12th gen use ALL core throttling/voltage... They are NOT the same and DO function differently. This is noted on the Intel documentation that all of 3/50+ CZcams tech people actually read. SkatterBencher is literally the only person to put out a video actually demonstrating working knowledge of these changes. To say that 14th gen and 13th gen are the same is simply willful ignorance and a disservice to the community. We can do better.
