here is the story for those of you wondering:
Brown's damaged bomber was spotted by Germans on the ground, including Franz Stigler (then an ace with 27 victories), who was refueling and rearming at an airfield. He soon took off in his Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 (which had a .50 caliber Browning machine gun bullet embedded in the radiator, which risked the engine overheating) and quickly caught up with Brown's plane. Through the damaged bomber's airframe Stigler was able to see the injured and incapacitated crew. To the American pilot's surprise, Stigler did not open fire on the crippled bomber. Stigler recalled the words of one of his commanding officers from Jagdgeschwader 27, Gustav Rödel, during his time fighting in North Africa, “If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." Stigler later commented, "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down."
Twice, Stigler tried to get Brown to land his plane at a German airfield and surrender, or divert to nearby neutral Sweden, where he and his crew would receive medical treatment and be interned the remainder of the war. Brown and the crew of the B-17 didn't understand what Stigler was trying to mouth and gesture to them and so flew on. Stigler later told Brown he was trying to get them to fly to Sweden. Stigler then flew near Brown's plane in a formation on the bomber's port side wing, so German antiaircraft units would not target it; he then escorted the damaged B-17 over the coast until they reached open water. Brown, unsure of Stigler's intentions at the time, ordered his dorsal turret gunner to point at Stigler but not open fire in order to warn him off. Understanding the message and certain that the bomber was out of German airspace, Stigler departed with a salute.[16]

The BF-109 G6 variant never had the Browning .50, the BF-109 G6 used two nose mounted MG 131(13mm machinegun) and on the propeller would be the MG 151/20(20mm cannon), those are added for more effectiveness for bigger targets like Heavy Bombers or Frontline Bombers. They would also add a additional MG 151/20 under the wing for more firepower like you saw on that video when the BF-109 had 2 x 20mm cannons under its wings. the BF-109 G6 would also have a 30mm cannon switched for the 20mm MG 151/20. The earlier variants of the BF-109 would go on and use the MG 151/20's like on the E,G,F, variants.

That German pilot...Franz Stigler... he had a huge amount of honour and courage. flying like that with a B17 with all of its guns pointed at you and all the flak aimed at it pointing at you and it... that guy deserves a medal for honour in the sky. he could just have easily killed the entire crew and collected the coveted cross for 23 air kills but no, he had a sense of honour.
+Husky Wolf He does deserve a medal, but remember if any of his commanding officers found out they would've branded him a traitor then executed him, he later died in 2008. They're currently making a movie based on the event

Today is the anniversary of that incredible display of honor during war, December 20, 2017. Almost seven decades ago, Franz Stigler escorted Charlie Brown's Ye Old Pub out of Europe. I still can barley imagine seeing it, a 109 and a B-17 flying side by side towards England.

I just read about Brown and Stigler. I suggest everyone does, because the song makes far more sense, and makes light of the fact that regardless of what you thought of that war, there *were* good people on both sides.

check out GhostDogs video to Ghost Division it is about the armour division Rommel commanded during the invasion of france.
rommel was a cool dude but was a really shitty general. lost most of his abttles and gave no shits about logsitics
you might think so, and depending on one´s point of view one might say you are correct. However in my opinion Rommel´s failures as a general had more to do with the impossible situations the German leadership put him in, were it is, for me at least, difficult to see that any other German general would have been able to do better than Rommel did. The two prime examples are D-day and the African campaign. The African campaign was lost due to the allies constantly destroying the German supply lines in the Mediterranean. And during the defense of Normandy the allies had all the advantages air superiority, numerical superiority and naval supremacy. And I am aware of Von Runstedt´s suggestion of defending farther inland. But seeing how quickly the Wehrmacht lost control of France after the landing I find it unlikely that Runstedt´s plan would have worked any better. Because after the landing the allied forces, which would at that point have had not only air superiority but also have been able to engage their entire ground force in the campaign, would simply have annihilated the numerical inferior Wehrmacht just like happened historically. And yes I know that it took several months to take France But all time is relative, and compared to say the Italian campaign which lasted for several years, that is still pretty short. P.S. this is not me trying to be arrogant I just thought I Should lend you my perspective on things, since most evil come from people being to sure about that they are right. I have always felt it to be important to listen to what others have to say and offer my opinion.
@@SkylordAh Rommel basically defined tank warfare. The man was a genius at armored combat. The problem was just the Wehrmacht asked for miracles from him and gave him very little resources to pull them off with.

Nazi fanatics were a minority in German army after all. Wehrmacht and SS were totally different parts for example, SS-Totenkopf being the ultimate fanatics far from Prussian army code.
I don't glorify the war, but want to be fair with the history and the men executing orders.
Telling facts and truth is never a glorification of war - it helps to understand a situation we hopefully never going to see in the coming generations anymore

God I got to find me some Sabaton albums.
I finished listening to the audiobook version of A Higher Call last night & I can't recommend it highly enough. You learn so, so much about Franz & Charlie's story. Especially Franz's. I was moved to tears during the last hour of the book. I felt like I knew them both personally. Remarkable story and Franz is proof that honorable knights can still show up in the world.

This German Ace showed more honor than any man had ever done, his mission was to prevent bombers from bombing Germany, and on that day he escorted a bomber that never flew again. He never aimed to kill, only disable the plane. He always showed honor to his opponent.
Great tribute, surprised that you didn't use clips from the movie they made in conjunction with the book "A Higher Call" for it though, but who am I to complain.

How did Stigler not get killed for his actions? Apparently he died in 2008 after meeting Brown in the 1980's
He protected his country that is not illegal in war shooting at a parachute is illegal and killing civilians that is illegal and can you get killed he didn't broke the rules of the war
He kept his mouth shut about it until Charlie Brown told the story in the eighties. Then he came forward with it aswell

He told his squadron that he would split off and take care of the bomber. After seeing the bomber's condition and the crew's situation he had a moment of realisation and decided to spare them. When he reported back and his squadron asked why he took so long, he dismissed it and said he took the bomber out.

Stop talking about war thunder, its just an arcade game like any other. Play IL2 Sturmovik instead, now thats where you find realistic air combat!
You do realize IL2 Sturmovik was basically War Thunder's realistic/sim mode in a game on its own, right? It was made by the same company, and the mechanics and UI are very similar. Same deal with Birds of Steel. You're basically telling me to play a less refined version of War Thunder's realistic mode.
IL2 ? I get in my REAL Bf109-G and my m8 gets in his B-17 and we have fun OUTSIDE.
