Hi Audrey. My wife and I have a Formosa 47’. We saw your boat in Cabo San Lucas last year. Now we are in La Paz. I wanted to let you know how we raise our mainsail. We have a Milwaukee M18 fuel, battery operated angle drill with an adapter for a winch (available at Amazon). This tool basically makes all of our winches into power winches. It makes taking up all of the excess Genoa sheet after a tack no work. Much faster than hand cranking our cockpit winch. We use it to roll our Genoa back onto the furler, raise the mainsail, lift our dinghy at night, and onto the deck for a passage, and general winch operation when under sail. I am 72, my wife is 62, and this is a life saver for us. I can’t seem to attach a picture or video, but I am sure you can find a picture.

Hi Captain. Awesome video! I own a Vagabond 47’, Formosa’s smaller but older sister 1976. I often sail long passages alone. What you need is just 1 strong electric winch in your cockpit. With some pulleys you can do everything with it, pull up your main, roll in your headsail and so on.

Hey Aubrey, I’m so pleased you seem to be updating more regularly here. Thank you. I’ve been watching your posts for a few years now. So full of admiration for you. Taking on something the size of Houdini is quite a task. I am imagining that your inner artist saw more in Houdini and possibly missed the practicalities of working her single handed. The fact that you’re making it work is testament to your determination. Fantastically well done. Geoff.

Your doing just fine , sailing a large 50ft yacht alone. Just a note, raising Anchor alone in a crowded spot is going to be challenging for anybody. A remote auto pilot control is good as is powerful windlass . As for raising the Main . that's a big sail , around 50' hoist I suspect. I assume you have internal halyards which often exit the mast too low. This make it difficult to pull down on the rope using body weight . next best thing is obviously the winch . Try a powered Winch Handle , you only need one... this turns all your winches into electric. They are expensive but I have seen people use a Battery Drill with appropriate bit. The other thing is when hoisting, raise the Topping lift as much as you can and release the Outhaul and put plenty of slake in the Main-sheet . That sail needs to be like a limp ... thing .. , not the time to be hard.., if you know what I mean. Oh that reminds me, lots of lubrication, I used to use Vaseline but I think silicon is probably better , use a lot or often. . pre flight check . Almost every host spray a little on each slide.
Just a word on Sail trim , your boat generally needs Full / deep sails , so in most conditions don't over tighten both the Halyard and Outhaul. A light weight easily driven racing yacht can sail with flat sails but a heavy more rounded hull needs power, torque. Its the same as your Ford Lehman , Low reeving but mountains of Torque. This is not what you would put in a speed boat but the perfect motor for the Pirate Ship. A little slackness in the hoist is not a bad thing , it helps put fullness in the sail. I would love to come assist some time but I'm a long way away. Land of OZ.

I learned a long time ago from my Pops that it's almost always something simple. More often than not a wire connection will go bad before the major parts go bad. Good job finding and fixing the problem. Plus side is you basically have a brand new starter now!

Just some useful advice: Don't ever go into a very tight space if you're alone, and NEVER if you have to reach down head first. Had a chap here in UK, that was working on his boat in the aft lazarette , slipped down and couldn't get himself back out. He was fortunate to just reach his phone and call 999 (our 911) , without that he could have died!!

Get some box cars to ease the mainsail up (and down) easier. I had a CT-65 which is similar style.
Also there is an electric hand drill attachment to crank the winches.

To hoist the main with minimal effort the mainsail must be fully luffing. If you are even a few points off the wind, the sail will fill and create resistance. 🕊❤️🗽

    Hey Miss Lone Star
First watch, just came across your channel. Nice job w/single hand!
I’m setting up my LH 53 for easier solo so have a few ideas:
Raising main will be so much easier. No idea what your present setup is, but a sail track w/modern ball bearing sliders will make it simple. Mine is in-mast furling main, which is ideal but requires an entire new rig $$. Very best solution imo is in-boom furling main. I’m sure you have, but soapy wash whatever mast sliders you have, then spray w/McLube SailKote.
Convert 1 (or 2) winches to electric. You can then use low-friction rings to route any line you need to winch to the electric.
I just installed a wireless remote control for windlass. Simply and inexpensive. Then can raise anchor from helm while motoring forward to take pressure off windlass. Add a GoPro or bt video at bow, so can see how anchor is retrieving from an iPad at helm.
There are plenty of GoGoGadgets to make s/h so much easier 😊

A very common problem causing excessive friction hoisting a mainsail, is slugs/slides that are loosely held to the sail by the webbing. As the sail is raised, the slugs/slides go out of alignment with the groove/track and bind. Continuing to grind away on a winch often causes tighter binding and more friction. Instead, try hoisting about 2 feet or so, then easing down a few inches, or just enough to allow the slugs/slides to unbind. Then repeat until fully hoisted. Often the webbing holding each slug/slide can be stitched much tighten to naturally hold each slug/slide in better alignment to the groove/track and dramatically reduce or eliminate this problem. Hope this helps.

  • @SailFanatics
    @SailFanatics Před 3 měsíci

Beginners tip for rising the main: first fully release the mainsheet. Otherwise, the wind creates heavy pressure on the half raised sail, making the raising extra hard, as you demonstrated in the video.

  • @escapeseeker

After owning 5 sailboats, always do the simplest things first. The click meant low battery or bad connections aka loose wire. Delighted to see you sailing your boat single handed, not many would.

  • @RodRuth
    @RodRuth Před 6 měsíci +4

Regarding the heavier anchor: Your upper body will adjust, and become stronger, and that's usually not a bad thing...lol. I would suggest the priority is the safe keeping of your vessel at anchor. I think you made a good choice with the anchor you currently have. It's better to be safe than be sorry. Perhaps it's just a matter of upgrading the windlass to compensate.
Also, electric winches would definitely go a long way, no question.
Difficulty raising the main: From what I'm seeing on your video, it shouldn't be that difficult. I'm guessing it occurs in the latter stage of raising. I would check the track around the top of the mast especially, it may be bent, or come loose. Obviously where it is the most difficult, is where you'd find the problem.
Another terrific video. Thanks for sharing. Well done.

Get a cheap multimeter to check battery voltage, they could be low. How old are the batteries? Do you remember if the Alternator was working properly? Check to see if connections are tight and the pully belt is snug. This could be why the battery is low if Alternator belt was loose or connection loose. If you see any white/green coating on wires or cables that's Corrosion. Corrosion causes resistance to the flow, which means wires will heat up and melt. So, do you smell anything that was burnt? Black soot is a tell-tail of burnt electro-mechanical wiring say in an Alternator. Just some tip's to look for and be aware of.

I added Sail Track and Slide System by Tides Marine for my main sail. Huge difference in raising the main. I can now raise the sail without the winch except for the last few feet. It is not safe to swim alone:
Something might happen to your health, a storm might arise, and if something gets jammed, you won’t be able to cope with everything at the same time. Someone needs to steer, and someone needs to deal with rigging, problems, leaks, radios, if necessary.
As for setting the main sail - a 51-foot yacht is a large boat, and large, heavy sails. You need an electric winch and rope output to the cockpit with winch control. You also need to check whether the sliders move well along the mast, whether they jam, or whether the shaft rope is twisted.
Sorry, my English is not ideal. I hope I was clear. I wish you good luck with your boat living.

Aubrey, to get foward motion on Houdini you could use the forward sail first, then set the main sail. to slow down the boat you drop the main sail and then reef the forward sail. The pull cord on the genset could be modified to start with hytorque drill to spin the crank around. Same with the main winchs a 90 degree battery HD Drill. Something to think about.

The productive theory is for those who have never been introduced to the sailing for life way of life. When I was confronted by the 9-5 worker bees back at harbor in Lewes Delaware they were a bit older than college age and had never been introduced to someone who retired at 35 while I was still young enough to sail single handed. Oh about raising the main you should really look into a powered winch that can do the cranking for you by remote control so your other two hands can be utilized elsewhere.

An anchor-handling trick I use as a single-hander if there is appreciable wind: break the anchor out of the seabed and haul in until the bow has blown off 45°, then go back to the helm and shift the engine into reverse. The boat will quickly pivot around stern to wind and pretty much hold station, depending on wind/tide conditions. Go forward again to finish securing the anchor. This technique eliminates the chance of blowing down on someone, and at worst, you're creeping slowly windward, so can judge the likelihood of collisions w/ anchored boats almost calmly. And it makes you look like the G.O.A.T. in a situation where hurried semi-panic is the norm.

If you can muster the funds - I suggest you look at battcar system for the mainsail luff. This will make your job so much easier raising and lowering the sail alone. It will be safer for you.

My two cents, if it's electrical, and it don't work it's grounds first, grounds second, on and on. Plus sand, file, scrape, then tighten, no washy. Great channel, as a dad, I'm pretty sure he was right. They'll be a zillion things to spend bucks on. Did a Pacific crossing on bascially the same boat in the 80's. Fair winds!

Your main should not be that hard to raise, at least not until you get it up to about 3/4 of the way up. You might check the cars and see if they are binding on the way up. If they are the original cars, you might want to look at lubing them. Also, best thing about a ketch is being able to run mizzen and headsail. You won't have as much speed, but they would be much easier to handle. You could also go up to a much higher wind speed with less worry.
The great thing about your Ford Lehman is that there are literally hundreds of people who can work on it around the world. In Africa it is one of the most common older engines from tractors. The thing is bullet proof. I once ran my engine without opening the seacocks. I was almost out of the Ventura Harbor on New Year's day when I saw that the engine was over-heating. I knew immediately what it was. We had been off the boat for about 2 weeks when we went to visit my parents in Louisiana and I had closed all the seacocks while we were gone and forgot to open them. My first reaction was to open the seacocks. Fortunately, I didn't do that. I slowly returned to our dock, opened all the hatches to the engine compartment, and let it sit for an entire day. Not immediately exposing the super hot engine to cold sea water saved the engine. I had a mechanic come over and he said the old Ford didn't even warp the heads. We started it back up, and it ran perfectly. No issues at all. If I had opened the seacock, the exposure to col sea water would have warped the heads, cracked the block, and required a whole new engine.

Clean / wiggle terminals first call & even if not actual problem will help. Turn to see if solinoid is engaging, hear click click can be the contacts inside solidoid that can be sanded / filed or jimmy some copper tube & make somthing, other wise brushes. Ive learned also is brushes and doesnt start you can give SM hit - quick sharp shock with socket extension bar - what happens is as the carbon brushes wear down - sometimes they hold - but just that little shock helps dislogde them so spring can push onto stator more freely and can get way with that to make preperations. Real prick having to solder new brushes on as you need a lot of heat - and careful not to have solder creep up the flexable braded wire {so pays to put oil in wire were you dsont want solder to go} Surpised you did it yourself - no insult but sometimes youve got to be tenatcious / cunning / experience working around things. Kudos.

Mainsail hoist shouldn't be as hard as in the video. Clean and dry lube the track, dead slow or stop (if stop, hoist the mizzen to point her up). Pre lift the boom a bit with the topping lift. Hand hoist as far as you can, then go to the winch. Once full hoist, slack the topping lift. Also put a bit of slack in the main sheet often helps. In addition I always slack the lazy jacks and carry them forward and clear while hoisting. (I'm also a Formosa 51 center cockpit) ... Also aside from buying an electric winch, there's the battery powered drill that some use, I haven't so no 1st hand knowledge. I'm going to crank up my generator and use a 110v drill to see what I think about it before dropping a half a grand on yet another tool .... Fair winds and hooray for you. PS: I think of the 51's more as little ships than just another sailboat.

Aubrey, bring the old part with you to match the new one. Save the old one to take apart to discover what the problem was. Bet it was crud or something burnt up inside it.

Don't have your boom on tight, pulls the cars back in the track making lifting the main harder also helps to loosen the outhaul. Load in the sail while raising = friction = harder to hoist.
