I'm 21, I've been teaching financial literacy for free in universities, but can't sustain myself, so really want to know if there an interest from young people to pay for self-development like financial literacy 😀
When I graduated uni I started earning four times as much but lived the same student lifestyle for two years, now I have "fuck it" money for when I want to quit a shitty job or get out of a bad situation, makes me a lot happier than a nice apartment or new clothes could have

I used to be really bad about spending, especially on art supplies or eating meals out. after I actually started saving and budgeting myself, I'm honestly addicted to saving money. it's NICE watching the money grow and knowing it's there for emergencies or a small splurge.
It pains me that the 50/30/20 rule has never been realistic for me. Rent, utilities, and health insurance are 75-80% of my income and I even have the best job I've ever had. It's tough out here.
Idk where you live (I understand high cost of living, I live in Sydney Aus), but look into rent hacking. if you can find a way to sublease (even if it’s just a room) you can seriously offset rent costs 👌🏽

Cash envelopes are great for people who are “spenders” and tend to overspend on credit cards! If you have the self control to use cards minimally and the discipline to pay it off each month, then that’s great, but if not then cash envelopes are a good option.
tip my dad told me: teenagers (aka me lmao), if you get a summer job or something to make a little extra pocket money, take your paychecks and keep a certain percentage (i split mine 50/50) for pocket money and put the rest of it in savings. this money can be used in university for groceries, essentials, pocket money, etc. you don't wanna be working and studying at the same time for stress reasons and other things!

This is so great! My wife and I are working on paying off all of our debt. Our rent is about 20% of gross income, and we've stopped all non--essential spending! Projected to pay off $120,000 of student loans in under three years! Budgeting is a life saver!!

I'm very impulsive with my money and I never save it, there comes a time when I really need it and I have nothing saved. And what you said about comparing yourself to others is very real, I always spend more when I'm with a person who has "a lot of money" because I think aah it's okay, just today. I loved the video, and now I just need a job to apply it hahaha

Clearly that's not a reality here in Portugal. Minimum wage is 600€ and you basically can't afford a rent on your own because that's basically the price for a one bedroom appartment in the big cities!
i earn about 1000 a month and the cheapest rent is 700 maybe 650 in the countryside but i dont have a car and if i did the cost to keep it wouldnt be worth it

As someone in their 20s, I feel like what has been easiest for me when it comes to a budget is asking for help over time (adding a new expense to your "What I'm Responsible to Pay For" list each in each step of financial development, but not being disappointed in yourself when you still need help from your family) and making your emergency fund and budget after the first month of a new job (and readjusting the budget to the lowest monthly/ weekly/ biweekly average wage).
A really good video, I appreciate you taking your time to make these. I always apply 50/30/20 budgeting pattern which has helped me greatly in saving and also investing.
How do you budget using this pattern you mentioned.
@@annasawyer9081 it's a 50% expenses, 30% investing and 20% savings. I try to spend less which has created more room for investing.
My budgeting is bad, as I manage to save just 5% because I don’t earn much.

"Financial literacy + responsibility = freedom & empowerment" is so, so true. I've been on both sides of the coin- not even thinking about savings pre-2018 -> starting to educate myself on financial literacy and budget/save/invest, and the latter helps me feel much freer longterm. The smart financial decisions I made in 2019 (ex: emergency fund) have really been helping me during shaky economic times in 2020.

I love your comment about being wary of the spending habits of the people you surround yourself with! I've noticed that when I'm hanging with friends with similar financial goals, I tend to spend less on non-essential purchases and vise versa. Great video, Elena 😊

my older sister still lives with us right now because of the pandemic. She's using this time learning about financial education and how to save money. It caused me to look at your videos. She's really smart (engineer) but we have never had a more advanced financial education and she says seeing a woman close to her age talking about money really helps with the budgeting/debt anxiety because of college. I love that you do these videos!! 👏🏻 Something my boss suggested to me is to budget an amount for gas+going out+clothes+fun extras and take it out in cash every week on Friday. If it’s gone by Wednesday, then it’s gone and you can’t spend more until Friday rolls around again. Kind of like your envelope idea :)
This video inspired me so much to not spend all my money I have right now with the clothes I want and instead save it for like when I’m 20 to make the trip I’ve always wanted with my friends. This was so great, thanks Elena! I'm in my early 30s, but a lot of these apply to me since I'm not married, don't own a home and don't have kids. It can be frustrating to not feel as financially secure as my peers my age (I switched careers and had to start over), but budgeting is a great way to make sure I can still hang out and have fun with them!

This video was so needed🙌 I've been saving since my first job at 14 (now 19) because my parents were never taught how to and want better for my siblings and I so its always been a rule we have to and I'm so grateful for it now! I love a good haul video as much as the next person but after this video I realise how toxic those videos are on my spending habits and mindset, we are truly in the days of overconsumption and I believe influencers tend to validate this behaviour and as a viewer that's enough justification for me and it needs to change! 💗

I also find that its easier to track the Money spending during the Month, not the end. Because i know i will forget it😅 i have a planner where i will determine the amount i Think i'll spend at the beginning, then all my purchases (like elena split up) and then i analyse at the end how much i spent for what. Also: one or two glasses of wine a month will really save your purse. Like seriously, drinking is so expensive! And most of the time you dont even remember if you ordered this one shot or not.

I found it so crazy the fact that you have to build your own retirement fund ???? I'm from Argentina and that doesn't exist here lol you just have to work in order to contribute to the state and then THEY PAY for it and you get a free health insure which covers a part of your medicines, social stuff, etc. Sooooo weird that you really have to start thinking about retiring in your 20s
I live in Denmark and it's almost the same here. It's hard in the US a nd I think it's amazing how must people make it work still. Lots of issues tough.
We're all pay into social security but that system is failing fast and people in our twenties have no reason to believe that there will be anything left into our old age so we have to take it into our own hands
The state has no money. You pay the pensions of those currently taking a pension over the period of your working life. If all goes well, someone will be taking your position and paying your pension when you retire and need it. In many countries people are (quite rightly) not relying on the fact there will be a pension for them when they are older despite having contributed to them through taxes over their life. 😢
@@geollizzie2459 Yes, that is why I will save money for my pension. I pay more for pension tax than the amount I would receive.. It would be better if I could just save it for myself.
Ikr. It works slightly differently in my country. Basically, the employer and the employee have to contribute a fixed percentage of the monthly salary to the retirement fund account (every citizen has one). You can apply to withdraw emergency money from this fund before retirement but the conditions are strict. Before you retire, the fund will be managed for investments. The returns are quite good, according to my mom who checked her account a few years back.
Gov healthcare is not 100% free but mostly subsidized, so you can get meds for as low as $1 even without insurance.

Defining my wants vs. needs is a battle I’ve been fighting but I’m finding that it’s so worth it! It’s incredibly rewarding when I’m aware of the good I’m doing for my future finances, and putting large chunks of money away in savings funds to build up to a goal is very satisfying. Like, $5 at Starbucks on the way home from work, or just that much more money to go to my “move out” fund?
